Conjugated porphyrin polymer films with nickel single sites for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Directly fused nickel(ii) porphyrins are successfully investigated as heterogeneous single-site catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Conjugated polymer thin films from Ni(ii) 5,15-(di-4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)porphyrin (pNiDCOOMePP) and Ni(ii) 5,15-diphenylporphyrin (pNiDPP) showed an OER onset overpotential of 270 mV, and current densities of 1.6 mA cm^-2 and 1.2 mA cm^-2 at 1.6 V vs. RHE, respectively, representing almost a hundred times higher activity than those of monomeric thin films. The fused porphyrin thin films are more kinetically and thermodynamically active than their non-polymerized counterparts mainly due to the formation of conjugated structures enabling a dinuclear radical oxo-coupling (ROC) mechanism at low overpotential. More importantly, we have deciphered the role of the porphyrin substituent in the conformation and performance of porphyrin conjugated polymers as (1) to control the extension of the conjugated system during the oCVD reaction, allowing the retention of the valence band deep enough to provide a high thermodynamic water oxidation potential, (2) to provide a flexible molecular geometry to facilitate O₂ formation from the interaction between the Ni-O sites and to weaken the π-bond of the *Ni-O sites for enhanced radical character, and (3) to optimize the water interaction with the central metal cation of the porphyrin for superior electrocatalytic properties. These findings open the scope for molecular engineering and further integration of directly fused porphyrin-based conjugated polymers as efficient heterogeneous catalysts.

Characterization of "Free Base" and Metal Complex Thioalkyl Porphyrazines by Magnetic Circular Dichroism and TDDFT Calculations

UV–vis absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of octakis thioethyl “free base” porphyrazine H₂OESPz and its metal complexes MOESPz (M = Mg, Zn, Ni, Pd, Cu), as well as of [MnOESPz(SH)] were recorded. In the last case, MCD proved to have quite good sensitivity to the coordination of this complex with 1-methylimidazole (1-mim) in benzene. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations were carried out for the considered porphyrazine complexes and showed good performance on comparing with MCD and UV–vis experimental spectra, even in the open-shell Cu and Mn cases. Calculations accounted for the red shift observed in the thioalkyl compounds and allowed us to reveal the role of sulfur atoms in spectroscopically relevant molecular orbitals and to highlight the importance of the conformations of the thioethyl external groups. Calculated MCD spectra of [MnOESPz(SH)] confirm the Mn(III) → Mn(II) redox process, which leads to the [Mn(OESPz)(1-mim)₂] species, and the relevance of the spin state for MCD is revealed.

Copolymers of bipyridinium and metal (Zn & Ni) porphyrin derivatives; theoretical insights and electrochemical activity towards CO2

This study reports the electropolymerization of novel keto functionalized octaethyl metal porphyrins (Zn²⁺ and Ni²⁺) in the presence of 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bpy) as a bridging nucleophile. The polymer films were characterized by electrochemical, spectroscopic (UV-Vis, XPS, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy) and imaging (AFM and SEM) techniques. The absorption and electronic spectra confirm the presence of both porphyrin and 4,4′-bipyridine units in the film. The surface morphology reveals homogeneous film deposition with average roughness values of approx. 8 nm. The theoretical studies performed offered insights into the interplay of different metal centres (Zn²⁺ and Ni²⁺) and the keto functionality of the porphyrin unit in the formation of copolymer films. The electrochemical interaction of polymer films with CO₂ suggests a reversible trap and release of CO₂ with low energy barriers for both the polymers.

Phosphate Modified Screen Printed Electrodes by LIFT Treatment for Glucose Detection

The design of new materials as active layers is important for electrochemical sensor and biosensor development. Among the techniques for the modification and functionalization of electrodes, the laser induced forward transfer (LIFT) has emerged as a powerful physisorption method for the deposition of various materials (even labile materials like enzymes) that results in intimate and stable contact with target surface. In this work, Pt, Au, and glassy carbon screen printed electrodes (SPEs) treated by LIFT with phosphate buffer have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy to reveal a flattening effect of all surfaces. The electrochemical characterization by cyclic voltammetry shows significant differences depending on the electrode material. The electroactivity of Au is reduced while that of glassy carbon and Pt is greatly enhanced. In particular, the electrochemical behavior of a phosphate LIFT treated Pt showed a marked enrichment of hydrogen adsorbed layer, suggesting an elevated electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation. When Pt electrodes modified in this way were used as an effective glucose sensor, a 1–10 mM linear response and a 10 µM detection limit were obtained. A possible role of phosphate that was securely immobilized on a Pt surface, as evidenced by XPS analysis, enhancing the glucose electrooxidation is discussed.
