Kirchhoff rod-based three-dimensional dynamical model and real-time simulation for medical-magnetic guidewires

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Magnetic guidewire, fabricated from hard-magnetic soft composites, has recently emerged as an appropriate candidate for magnetic actuation systems to perform intravascular surgical navigation, owing to its elastic, magnetically steerable properties and good interphase with biological tissues. A suitable and efficient mathematical model for the magnetic guidewire is essential in the system to execute remote manipulation and active control.

METHODS

This paper presents a real-time Kirchhoff rod-based dynamical modeling approach, the magneto-elastic rod model, to simulate magnetic guidewire, which provides accurate simulations for two- and three-dimensional dynamic deflections induced by external magnetic fields and obtains deformed guidewire shapes in quasi-static status.

RESULTS

The proposed model is capable of describing the intrinsic principles of elastic body actuation by torques generated from the hard-magnetic soft matrix. The effectiveness of the developed model is validated, and the real-time simulation application is conducted via the semi-implicit numerical integration method.

CONCLUSIONS

It has been shown that the presented dynamical model captures large nonlinear deformations and transient responses of the magnetic guidewire in an imitated human blood environment, which could offer robust support for the construction of a simulated magnetically driven surgical system.

Virtual Reality and Cardiac Diseases: A Systematic Review of Applications and Effects

Introduction

Cardiac diseases have grown significantly in recent years, causing many deaths globally. Cardiac diseases can impose a significant economic burden on societies. The development of virtual reality technology has attracted the attention of many researchers in recent years. This study aimed to investigate the applications and effects of virtual reality (VR) technology on cardiac diseases.

Methods

A comprehensive search was carried out in four databases, including Scopus, Medline (through PubMed), Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore to identify related articles published until May 25, 2022. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) guideline for systematic reviews was followed. All randomized trials that investigated the effects of virtual reality on cardiac diseases were included in this systematic review.

Results

Twenty-six studies were included in this systematic review. The results illustrated that virtual reality applications in cardiac diseases can be classified in three categories of physical rehabilitation, psychological rehabilitation, and education/training. This study revealed that the use of virtual reality in psychological and physical rehabilitation can reduce stress, emotional tension, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) total score, anxiety, depression, pain, systolic blood pressure, and length of hospitalization. Finally, the use of virtual reality in education/training can enhance technical performance, increase the speed of procedures, and improve the user's skills, level of knowledge, and self-confidence as well as facilitate learning. Also, the most limitations mentioned in the studies included small sample size and lack of or short duration of follow-up.

Conclusions

The results showed that the positive effects of using virtual reality in cardiac diseases are much more than its negative effects. Considering that the most limitations mentioned in the studies were the small sample size and short duration of follow-up, it is necessary to conduct studies with adequate methodological quality to report their effects in the short term and long term.

Digital Twins and Enabling Technologies in Museums and Cultural Heritage: An Overview

This paper presents an overview of various types of virtual museums (ViM) as native artifacts or as digital twins (DT) of physical museums (PM). Depending on their mission and features, we discuss various enabling technologies and sensor equipment with their specific requirements and complexities, advantages and drawbacks in relation to each other at all stages of a DT's life cycle. A DT is a virtual construct and embodies innovative concepts based on emerging technologies (ET) using adequate sensor configurations for (meta-)data import and exchange. Our keyword-based search for articles, conference papers, (chapters from) books and reviews yielded 43 contributions and 43 further important references from Industry 4.0, Tourism and Heritage 4.0. After closer examination, a reference corpus of 40 contributions was evaluated in detail and classified along with their variants of DT-content-, communication-, and collaboration-centric and risk-informed ViMs. Their system features correlate with different application areas (AA), new or improved technologies-mostly still under development-and sensors used. Our proposal suggests a template-based, generative approach to DTs using standardized metadata formats, expert/curator software and customers'/visitors' engagement. It advocates for stakeholders' collaboration as part of a comprehensive validation and verification assessment (V&VA) throughout the DT's entire life cycle.

Telemedicine for healthcare: Capabilities, features, barriers, and applications

Regular hospital visits can be expensive, particularly in rural areas, due to travel costs. In the era of the Covid-19 Pandemic, where physical interaction becomes risky, people prefer telemedicine. Fortunately, medical visits can be reduced when telemedicine services are used through video conferencing or other virtual technologies. Thus, telemedicine saves both the patient's and the health care provider time and the cost of the treatment. Furthermore, due to its fast and advantageous characteristics, it can streamline the workflow of hospitals and clinics. This disruptive technology would make it easier to monitor discharged patients and manage their recovery. As a result, it is sufficient to state that telemedicine can create a win-win situation. This paper aims to explore the significant capabilities, features with treatment workflow, and barriers to the adoption of telemedicine in Healthcare. The paper identifies seventeen significant applications of telemedicine in Healthcare. Telemedicine is described as a medical practitioner to diagnose and treat patients in a remote area. Using health apps for scheduled follow-up visits makes doctors and patients more effective and improves the probability of follow-up, reducing missing appointments and optimising patient outcomes. Patients should have an accurate medical history and show the doctor any prominent rashes, bruises, or other signs that need attention through the excellent quality audio-video system. Further, practitioners need file management and a payment gateway system. Telemedicine technologies allow patients and doctors both to review the treatment process. However, this technology supplements physical consultation and is in no way a substitute for a physical consultation. Today this technology is a safe choice for patients who cannot go to the doctor or sit at home, especially during a pandemic.
