Digital subtraction angiography system evaluation with phantoms

[Stereotactic localization in medical imaging. Technical and methodologic aspects]

Stereotactic neurosurgery and stereotactic radiation therapy require the three-dimensional localization of lesions for biopsy or for treatment planning. The aim of this paper is the description of methods used in the different imaging modalities: x-ray teleradiography, digital subtracted angiography, computed tomography, and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging. The simple pin-target locating techniques are distinguished from those serving to the definition of volumes target necessary to treatment planning. Performances and difficulties of these techniques are emphasized. The specific methodology developed in Lille is described as an example. Organizational aspects and necessary quality controls for a good progress of the entire procedure, from imaging to treatment, are also discussed.

Assessment of image intensifier and distortion for DSA localization studies

The authors present methods of correcting pincushion and S distortions of an image intensifier, and of measuring the geometrical parameters of the imaging device used for localization from digital subtraction angiography brain studies. Pincushion and S distortions of the image intensifier are corrected by a calibration grid. A test pattern is used to study effectiveness of the corrections. Intrinsic geometrical parameters (source-to-image distance, centre of X-ray projection) of the apparatus are measured by the use of a calibration phantom. Short-range and long-range time drift of the distortion, as well as influence of the parameters of image acquisition on the accuracy of the localization results, are considered. The results obtained successfully demonstrate the accuracy of the correction, provided that the apparatus is warm.

Some DSA testing methods and an evaluation of eight available units

Eight DSA units in the Sydney region were evaluated by a set of simple performance tests. Low contrast resolution and iodine sensitivity tests exhibited the most variation between the six fully tested units. A range of performance levels was measured. Four of the eight units required adjustment by the manufacturers' service engineer after testing. The evaluation of those units considered satisfactory by both the manufacturers and the operators indicated that the fully interfaced, integral units gave better results than the earlier 'add on' units.

Digital radiography

A quantitative comparison of the digital techniques reviewed in section 4.1-4.7 is difficult, for two reasons. Firstly, various authors have used slightly different techniques for assessing aspects of imaging performance (e.g. a variety of test objects for, and definitions of, spatial resolution). Secondly, with all imaging systems there exists an inter-relationship between spatial resolution, image acquisition time, image noise and dose. Some authors have chosen to emphasise one feature at the expense of others. Arnold (1982), in an overview of digital radiographic technology at that time, also noted the lack of standardisation of measurement techniques and exposure conditions, but nevertheless attempted a quantitative comparison of some aspects of digital radiographic systems with screen-film radiography and CT. The continuing developments in the field since then make a brief quantitative intercomparison of dubious value. Nevertheless, a qualitative summary of point, line and area exposure techniques is given in table 2 which incorporates many of the comments made by Arnold et al (1986) in a similar summary of digital radiographic systems.
