Dissociation between exercise intensity thresholds: mechanistic insights from supine exercise

Utility of the Respiratory Compensation Point for Estimating Critical Power: Insights From Normoxia and Hypoxia

We examined the validity of the respiratory compensation point (RCP) in estimating critical power (CP) by determining the relative agreement between them following an acute intervention, hypoxia, which reduces RCP and CP. RCP and CP were determined in normoxia (N: FiO2 = 0.21) and hypoxia (H: FiO2 = 0.13) with RCP converted to a power output (W) via linear regression of the V̇O2-time relationship with correction for the mean response time. RCP and CP were lower in hypoxia compared to normoxia (p < 0.001), but there was no difference between CP and RCP in N or H (N: 174 ± 26 (CP) vs. 178 ± 30 (RCP) W; H: 133 ± 19 (CP) vs. 139 ± 22 (RCP) W, p = 0.53). In both N (r = 0.32, p = 0.31) and H (r = 0.00, p = 0.99), RCP was not correlated with CP. Moreover, the 95% limits of agreement (LOA) were unacceptably wide (N: 3 ± 64 W; H: 7 ± 57 W). There was no correlation between the change in RCP and the change in CP caused by hypoxia (W: r = 0.32), with similarly poor 95% LOA (W: -3 ± 62 W). The weak correlations and wide LOA within and between conditions suggest little practical values in using RCP to estimate CP.

Combined effect of sprint interval training and post-exercise blood flow restriction on muscle deoxygenation responses during ramp incremental cycling

PURPOSE

This study investigated the effect of sprint-interval training combined with post-exercise blood flow restriction (i.e., SIT + BFR) on pulmonary gas exchange and microvascular deoxygenation responses during ramp incremental (RI) cycling.

METHODS

Nineteen healthy, untrained males (mean ± SD age: 24 ± 5 years; height: 178 ± 6 cm; body mass: 77.0 ± 10.7 kg) were assigned to receive 4 weeks of SIT or SIT + BFR. Before and after the intervention period, each participant completed a RI cycling test for determination of peak oxygen uptake (V ˙ O 2peak ) and the gas exchange threshold (GET) with deoxygenated heme (Δdeoxy[heme]) and tissue oxygenation index (TOI) measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in vastus lateralis (VL) muscle.

RESULTS

RelativeV ˙ O 2peak increased by 7% following both interventions (P ≤ 0.03). SIT + BFR increased peak Δdeoxy[heme] when normalized relative to leg arterial occlusion (PRE: 57.3 ± 13.0 vs. POST: 62.0 ± 13.2%; P = 0.009) whereas there was no significant difference following SIT (PRE: 64.9 ± 14.3 vs. POST: 71.4 ± 11.7%; P = 0.17). Likewise, TOI nadir decreased at exhaustion following SIT + BFR (PRE: 56.9 ± 9.1 vs. POST: 51.4 ± 9.2%; P = 0.002) but not after SIT (PRE: 58.5 ± 7.1 vs. POST: 56.3 ± 8.2%; P = 0.29). The absolute cycling power at the GET increased following SIT + BFR (PRE: 108 ± 13 vs. POST: 125 ± 17 W, P = 0.001) but was not significantly different following SIT (PRE: 112 ± 7 VS. POST: 116 ± 11 W, P = 0.54).

CONCLUSION

The addition of post-exercise BFR to SIT alters the mechanism underlying the enhancement inV ˙ O 2peak by increasing the peak rate of muscle fractional O2 extraction in previously untrained males.

Muscle oxygen saturation rates coincide with lactate-based exercise thresholds

INTRODUCTION

Monitoring muscle metabolic activity via blood lactate is a useful tool for understanding the physiological response to a given exercise intensity. Recent indications suggest that skeletal muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2), an index of the balance between local O2 supply and demand, may describe and predict endurance performance outcomes.

PURPOSE

We tested the hypothesis that SmO2 rate is tightly related to blood lactate concentration across exercise intensities, and that deflections in SmO2 rate would coincide with established blood lactate thresholds (i.e., lactate thresholds 1 and 2).

METHODS

Ten elite male soccer players completed an incremental running protocol to exhaustion using 3-min work to 30 s rest intervals. Blood lactate samples were collected during rest and SmO2 was collected continuously via near-infrared spectroscopy from the right and left vastus lateralis, left biceps femoris and the left gastrocnemius.

RESULTS

Muscle O2 saturation rate (%/min) was quantified after the initial 60 s of each 3-min segment. The SmO2 rate was significantly correlated with blood lactate concentrations for all muscle sites; RVL, r = - 0.974; LVL, r = - 0.969; LG, r = - 0.942; LHAM, r = - 0.907. Breakpoints in SmO2 rate were not significantly different from LT1 or LT2 at any muscle sites (P > 0.05). Bland-Altman analysis showed speed threshold estimates via SmO2 rate and lactate are similar at LT2, but slightly greater for SmO2 rate at LT1.

CONCLUSIONS

Muscle O2 saturation rate appears to provide actionable information about maximal metabolic steady state and is consistent with bioenergetic reliance on oxygen and its involvement in the attainment of metabolic steady state.

Determination of exercise intensity domains during upright versus supine cycling: a methodological study

Background

There is a growing interest among the research community and clinical practitioners to investigate cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) procedures and protocols utilized in supine cycling.

Materials and Methods

The current study investigated the effects of posture on indicators of exercise intensity including gas exchange threshold (GET), respiratory compensation point (RCP), and the rate of peak oxygen uptake (V̇O₂ peak), as well as the role of V̇O₂ mean response time (MRT) in determining exercise intensity domains in nineteen healthy men (age: 22 ± 3 years). Two moderate-intensity step-transitions from 20 to 100 Watt (W) were completed, followed by a maximal CPET. After completing the ramp test, participants performed a constant-load at 90% of their attained peak power output (PPO).

Results

No differences were observed in the V̇O₂ MRT between the two positions, although the phase II-time constant (τV̇O_2p) was 7 s slower in supine position compared to upright (p = 0.001). The rate of O₂ uptake in the supine position at GET and RCP were lower compared to the upright position (208 ± 200 mL·min^-1 (p = 0.007) and 265 ± 235 mL·min^-1 (p = 0.012) respectively). Besides, V̇O₂ peak was significantly decreased (by 6%, p = 0.002) during supine position. These findings were confirmed by the wide limits of agreement between the measures of V̇O₂ in different postures (V̇O₂ peak: -341 to 859; constant-load test: -528 to 783; GET: -375 to 789; RCP: -520 to 1021 all in mL·min^-1).

Conclusion

Since an accurate identification of an appropriate power output (PO) from a single-visit CPET remains a matter of debate, especially for supine cycling, we propose that moderate-intensity step-transitions preceding a ramp CPET could be a viable addition to ensure appropriate exercise-intensity domain determination, in particular upon GET-based prescription.
