Extreme hyperthermia tolerance in the world's most abundant wild bird

The thermal tolerances of vertebrates are generally restricted to body temperatures below 45–47 °C, and avian and mammalian critical thermal maxima seldom exceed 46 °C. We investigated thermoregulation at high air temperatures in the red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea), an African passerine bird that occurs in flocks sometimes numbering millions of individuals. Our data reveal this species can increase its body temperature to extremely high levels: queleas exposed to air temperature > 45 °C increased body temperature to 48.0 ± 0.7 °C without any apparent ill-effect, with individual values as high as 49.1 °C. These values exceed known avian lethal limits, with tolerance of body temperature > 48 °C unprecedented among birds and mammals.

Does hyperthermia constrain flight duration in a short-distance migrant?

While some migratory birds perform non-stop flights of over 11 000 km, many species only spend around 15% of the day in flight during migration, posing a question as to why flight times for many species are so short. Here, we test the idea that hyperthermia might constrain flight duration (FD) in a short-distance migrant using remote biologging technology to measure heart rate, hydrostatic pressure and body temperature in 19 migrating eider ducks (Somateria mollissima), a short-distance migrant. Our results reveal a stop-and-go migration strategy where migratory flights were frequent (14 flights day(-1)) and short (15.7 min), together with the fact that body temperature increases by 1°C, on average, during such flights, which equates to a rate of heat storage index (HSI) of 4°C h(-1) Furthermore, we could not find any evidence that short flights were limited by heart rate, together with the fact that the numerous stops could not be explained by the need to feed, as the frequency of dives and the time spent feeding were comparatively small during the migratory period. We thus conclude that hyperthermia appears to be the predominant determinant of the observed migration strategy, and suggest that such a physiological limitation to FD may also occur in other species.This article is part of the themed issue 'Moving in a moving medium: new perspectives on flight'.

Do birds sleep in flight?

The following review examines the evidence for sleep in flying birds. The daily need to sleep in most animals has led to the common belief that birds, such as the common swift (Apus apus), which spend the night on the wing, sleep in flight. The electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings required to detect sleep in flight have not been performed, however, rendering the evidence for sleep in flight circumstantial. The neurophysiology of sleep and flight suggests that some types of sleep might be compatible with flight. As in mammals, birds exhibit two types of sleep, slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye-movement (REM) sleep. Whereas, SWS can occur in one or both brain hemispheres at a time, REM sleep only occurs bihemispherically. During unihemispheric SWS, the eye connected to the awake hemisphere remains open, a state that may allow birds to visually navigate during sleep in flight. Bihemispheric SWS may also be possible during flight when constant visual monitoring of the environment is unnecessary. Nevertheless, the reduction in muscle tone that usually accompanies REM sleep makes it unlikely that birds enter this state in flight. Upon landing, birds may need to recover the components of sleep that are incompatible with flight. Periods of undisturbed postflight recovery sleep may be essential for maintaining adaptive brain function during wakefulness. The recent miniaturization of EEG recording devices now makes it possible to measure brain activity in flight. Determining if and how birds sleep in flight will contribute to our understanding of a largely unexplored aspect of avian behavior and may also provide insight into the function of sleep.

The role of sympathetic efferent activity in the regulation of brain temperature

The role of nasal heat exchange in the control of brain temperature has been studied in cats, pigs, ducks and rabbits during acute experiments under general anaesthesia. Nasal air flow at physiological rates caused hypothalamic temperature to fall at between 0.2 and 0.5 degrees C/min in cats, pigs and ducks, which all have arterial rete systems that can cool blood flowing to the brain, but not in rabbits, which lack an arterial rete. Bilateral stimulation of cervical sympathetic trunks reduced or abolished the brain cooling effect of nasal air flow in cats, pigs and ducks. After a period of airflow during which brain cooling was reduced by sympathetic stimulation, the end of stimulation was sometimes followed by marked and rapid brain cooling, indicating re-perfusion through ischaemic cooled tissues. Cervical sympathetic stimulation caused a reduction in resistance to nasal airflow in all species studied, by inducing vasoconstriction and shrinkage of the nasal mucosa. In species with well-developed arterial retia, the effect of cervical sympathetic stimulation in regulating nasal cooling of the brain is probably mediated by controlling blood flow through the nasal mucosa. Although this vascular control also occurs in rabbits, they cannot selectively cool the brain and sympathetic stimulation has no effect on rabbit brain temperature.
