Menstrual variations in thermal properties of the human breast

Is breast size a predictor of breast cancer risk or the laterality of the tumor?

The relationship of breast size both to breast cancer risk and to the laterality of the tumor was studied among 261 women diagnosed with breast cancer and 291 control subjects who were enrolled in the United States' Breast Cancer Detection and Demonstration Project from 1973 to 1980. Standardized measures of breast area were obtained by applying planimetry to bilateral screening mammograms taken four years before breast cancer was diagnosed in case subjects. The left breast was larger in 53 percent of women with breast cancer and in 60 percent of women in the control group; the difference in breast area by laterality was significant only among controls (P = 0.01). To assess breast cancer risk, breast area was categorized by quartiles, with the lowest quartile being the referent group. Risk was increased minimally among women with the largest breast area (odds ratios = 0.9, 0.9, 1.2); however, the point estimates were not statistically significant and there was no evidence of a linear trend. Left-sided diseased was diagnosed in 51 percent of women in the case group. Although the mean area of the breast with the malignancy did not differ significantly from the opposite breast, cancer developed in the larger breast of 57 percent of women with left- and 46 percent of women with right-sided disease. Breast size was associated with cancer of the left breast but not the right. However, these size differences were small since the area of the larger breast was less than 10 percent greater than the smaller breast among half of the case subjects.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A morphometric analysis of normal and sub-normal human mammary tissue

A morphometric study of normal and sub-normal adult human mammary tissue is presented. The semi-quantitative analysis showed an increased number of lobules in sub-normal glands versus normal ones. Minor alterations, consistent with the classical concept of incipient fibrocystic disease were found in both. Quantitative morphometry (Multiple Purpose Test) confirmed the first, rather subjective, impression that the section surface occupied by lobules was nearly three times larger in sub-normal glands. This finding was due to an higher number of more extended lobules per surface unit. The extra-lobular ducts in sub-normal tissues appeared larger, but their number per surface unit was not significantly increased when compared to normal specimens. Variations between individuals, even as variations in the same gland were wide. It is suggested that "adenosis" is an age-related phenomenon and that fibrosis and cystic dilatation may be a normal manifestation of ageing of the breast. A reevaluation of the concept of true mammary dysplasia might be needed.

Measurement of breast volume in females: description of a reliable method

Breast volume measurements were made on 47 adult subjects using a casting method. After drying, fast-setting plaster casts were filled with sand of known density to a level approximating the curvature of the chest wall. The reliability of both sand filling and casting proved to be high, r = 0.97, and r = 0.99, respectively. The total variable error was 10.2%. The effects of position (standing versus lying) was investigated in a separate sample of 15 subjects. No significant difference (P less than 0.05) was found between methods. The relationship between breast volume, girths, skinfolds, and body density was reported to be low.

Vaginal blood flow during the menstrual cycle

Six nulliparous young women slept 16 to 27 consecutive nights in a clinical research center. Vaginal blood flow was estimated from rates of removal of heat from the vaginal wall by a cooled probe inserted by the women immediately upon awakening. Plasma levels of estradiol, progesterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone were determined. Measured also were vaginal temperature and systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Systematic changes during the cycle were detected for all variables except systolic blood pressure. Rising levels of estradiol during late follicular phase were not correlated significantly with vaginal blood flow rates.
