Enhancing Patient Literacy on Calcium Supplementation: A Quality Improvement Initiative. Endocr Pract 2023; 29:48-52. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to assess patients' knowledge and identify barriers in interpreting calcium on supplement and nutrition labels and to determine whether education would be beneficial. METHODS Patients with conditions requiring calcium supplementation were included in this study. Participants were first given a 9-question pre-education survey. They were then taught how to read calcium on labels using the educational cards developed. This was followed by a 7-question posteducation survey. Endocrinologists were surveyed to assess their experience in treating patients who required calcium supplementation. RESULTS Before education, 31 (33%) and 37 (40%) of the participants felt that the supplement and nutrition labels, respectively, were confusing. After education, only 2 (2%) and 6 (6%) of the participants, respectively, still felt the same. There was a significant improvement in the interpretation of calcium citrate (Citracal) and calcium carbonate (TUMS) labels, with a trend of improvement in reading a milk label. Of the 47 endocrinologists surveyed, only 5 (11%) felt that their patients often or always knew the correct amount of calcium to be taken. Two-thirds 30 (64%) of the endocrinologists always or often explained to their patients how to interpret calcium labels. About half 23 (49%) of the endocrinologists always or often needed to take time to look up the calcium content of supplements. For most endocrinologists 29 (62%), this took at least 2 to 4 minutes. CONCLUSION Our patients had trouble interpreting calcium labels, and the use of educational cards was effective in improving calcium literacy.

Abstract
Evidence-based guidelines for cancer survivorship do not recommend dietary supplementation, yet older cancer survivors report high prevalence of dietary supplement use, specifically multivitamin (MVM), calcium, and vitamin D. Female cancer survivors (≥65 years) who were ≤5 years post-cancer diagnosis completed questionnaires assessing health-related quality of life (HRQoL), diet quality, and supplement intake. Intakes of MVM, calcium, and vitamin D supplementation were 61.4%, 76.9%, and 35.3%, respectively. Women who used MVM supplements had significantly higher dietary quality mean scores for total vegetables (4.5 ± 0.9 to 4.1 ± 1.1), greens and beans (4.1 ± 1.3 to 3.6 ± 1.6), whole fruit (4.7 ± 0.8 to 4.3 ± 1.3), and whole grains (2.9 ± 1.8 to 2.3 ± 1.6) than those who did not use these supplements. After controlling for demographic and clinical variables, the odds of MVM use was 1.07 times greater among those women who had higher total HEI scores. Participants with lower HRQoL were 4% more likely to take an MVM. Understanding the prevalence of supplementation, associations with diet quality, and perceived benefits of supplementation may help healthcare providers in educating survivors and promoting adherence to the evidence-based guidelines.

Abstract
Nutrition interventions developed using behaviour theory may be more effective than those without theoretical underpinnings. This study aimed to document the number of theory-based healthy eating interventions, the involvement of dietitians/nutritionists and the behaviour theories employed from 2000 to 2020. We conducted a review of publications related to healthy eating interventions that used behaviour change theories. Interventional studies published in English between 2000 and 2020 were retrieved from searching Medline, Cinahl, Embase, Psycinfo and Cochrane Central. Citation, country of origin, presence or absence of dietitian/nutritionist authors, participants, dietary behaviours, outcomes, theories and any behaviour change techniques (BCTs) stated were extracted. The publication trends on a yearly basis were recorded. A total of 266 articles were included. The number of theory-based interventions increased over the two decades. The number of studies conducted by dietitians/nutritionists increased, but since 2012, increases have been driven by other researchers. Social cognitive theory was the most used behaviour theory. Dietitians/nutritionists contributed to growth in publication of theory-based healthy eating interventions, but the proportion of researchers from other professions engaged in this field increased markedly. The reasons for this growth in publications from other professions is unknown but conjectured to result from greater prominence of dietary behaviours within the context of an obesity epidemic.

Abstract
The aim of this study is investigating the efficiency of educational intervention based on PRECEDE model on promotion of osteoporosis prevention behaviors in women. This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 200 women registered in two health centers of Fasa city, Fars province, Iran in 2017 to 2018. A questionnaire including items evaluating demographic information and PRECEDE model constructs was used for measuring nutrition and walking performance of studied women in osteoporosis prevention before and 12 months after intervention. Bone mineral density (BMD) was recorded at the lumbar spine and femur before and 12 months after intervention. One year after intervention, the intervention group showed a significant increase in knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, reinforcing factors, enabling factors, nutrition, and walking performance compared to the control group. Also, the value of lumbar spine and hip BMD T-Score of the intervention group was increased, while this value was reduced in the control group. Our findings showed that educational interventions based on PRECEDE model can positively affect prevention behaviors from osteoporosis by improving subjects' knowledge, attitude, enabling factors (resources such as health care access and services that can provide motivation for prevention behaviors from osteoporosis in women), self-efficacy, and reinforcing factors.

Abstract
Abstract Objective: To identify the key issues and health education strategies for the health promotion for the elderly. Method: An integrative literature review was conducted during the months of March and April 2018, by means of the Virtual Health Library, in the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, Latin American Literature in Health Sciences and the Scientific Electronic Library Online databases. After the search process and the selection of publications, the final sample consisted of 24 articles. Results: A total of 16 Brazilian articles, the majority of which were carried out in the southeast and south of the country, were identified, in which the most frequently expressed themes for the health education of the elderly were healthy eating and physical exercise practices. Conclusion: The actions of education in health were focused on healthy eating and physical activity, carried out by means of group workshops, seminars and/or lectures, performed, in the majority, by nurses and community health agents who were part of family health teams.

Abstract
Several interventions encouraging people to change their diet have been tested in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) but these have not been meta-synthesised and it is not known which elements of these interventions contribute to their effectiveness. The current review addressed these issues. Randomised controlled trials of dietary interventions in LMICs were eligible and identified via eight publication databases. Elements of both the intervention and comparison groups (e.g., behaviour change techniques (BCTs), delivery mode), participant characteristics and risk of bias were coded. Random effects meta-analysis of 76 randomised controlled trials found, on average, small- to medium-sized but highly heterogeneous improvement in dietary behaviour following an intervention. Small and homogeneous improvements were found for BMI/weight, waist- and hip-circumference, with medium-sized, but heterogeneous, improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol. Although many BCTs have yet to be tested in this context, meta-regressions suggested some BCTs (action planning, self-monitoring of outcome(s) of behaviour; demonstration of behaviour) as well as individually randomised trials, adult- or hypertensive-samples and lack of blinding were associated with larger dietary behaviour effect sizes. Interventions to encourage people from LMICs to change their diet produce, on average, small-to-medium-sized effects. These effects may possibly be increased through the inclusion of specific BCTs and other study elements.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to assess the determinants of nutrition behaviors and body mass index and determine the impact of a nutrition education intervention (NEI) among Mauritian housewives. A pretest-posttest design was used assessing Nutrition Knowledge (NK), Nutrition Attitudes, Fruit and Vegetable Intake (FVI), body mass index (BMI). Two hundred Mauritian housewives were recruited. The NEI was in the form of a lecture and lasted for twenty minutes. Statistical tests performed revealed that the mean NK score at baseline was 65.8 ± 6.92 and a significant increase of +17.1 at post-test and +16.1 at follow-up was observed. Determinants of NK were age, presence of elderly people, and BMI. Mean nutrition attitude score at baseline was 2.37 ± 0.22 with significant increase of +0.2 (post-test) and +0.17 at follow-up. Age, level of education, presence of elders, and NK were linked to a positive attitude. FVI was predicted by age, income, presence of elders, NK, and nutrition attitudes. Baseline FVI was 4.77 ± 1.11 which increased significantly (p < 0.001) to 4.98 ± 1.13 at post-test and 5.03 ± 1.20 at follow up. NEI had a positive impact suggesting the benefits of such intervention in the promotion of healthy nutrition behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sufficient intake of fruits and vegetables has been associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases and body weight management but the exact mechanism is unknown. The World Health Organisation and Food and Agriculture of the United Nation reports recommend adults to consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day excluding starchy vegetables. This review focuses on the importance of fruits and vegetables as well as the benefits and progress of nutrition education in improving intake. METHODS For this narrative review, more than 100 relevant scientific articles were considered from various databases (e.g Science Direct, Pub Med and Google Scholar) using the keywords Fruit and vegetable, Nutrition education, Body weight, Obesity, Benefits and challenges. RESULTS Existing data suggests that despite the protective effects of fruits and vegetables, their intakes are still inadequate in many countries, especially developing ones. Consequently enhancing strategies to promote fruit and vegetable intake are essential for health promotion among population. A number of reviews confirm that a well planned and behaviour focused nutrition education intervention can significantly improve behaviour and health indicators. CONCLUSION Despite challenges in nutrition education intervention programs, they are considered as a good investment in terms of cost benefit ratio. Rapid improvement in trends of nutrition education can be seen in many countries and majority of interventions has been successful in increasing fruits and vegetables intake. It is recommended that health professionals use multiple interventions to deliver information in several smaller doses over time to ensure improved outcomes.

Abstract
Background: Several studies reported the efficacy of osteoporosis prevention interventions in improvement of people’s preventive behaviors. However, there are reports that the interventions were not successful in altering osteoporosis health beliefs and preventive behaviors. Objectives: The current study aimed to assess the effect of a program based on health beliefs model (HBM) on females’ health beliefs and performances about osteoporosis preventive behaviors. Patients and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 120 patients registered in two healthcare centers of Fasa, Fars Province, Iran in 2014. A questionnaire including demographic information and HBM constructs was employed to measure the females’ beliefs regarding nutrition and walking performance in prevention of osteoporosis bone mineral density (BMD) measured at the lumbar spine and femur before, immediately after the intervention, and six months after the intervention. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, independent samples t-, Mann-Whitney U tests and repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Immediately and six months after the intervention, a significant increase was found in the intervention group’s health beliefs, nutrition, and walking performances to prevent osteoporosis. Six months after the intervention, lumbar spine BMD T-score increased to 0.127 ± 0.061 in the intervention group but reduced to -0.043 ± 0.059 in the control group. Also, hip BMD T-score increased to 0.125 ± 0.088 in the intervention group, but decreased to -0.028 ± 0.052 in control group. Conclusions: The current study showed the effectiveness of HBM in adoption of nutrition and walking behaviors as well as the increase of bone density to prevent osteoporosis.
