Abstract
Objectives To investigate the role of body mass index (BMI), serum lipid profile molecules and their derivative indexes in colorectal polyps. Methods A total of 352 individuals who underwent colonoscopy at our center were included in this retrospective analysis. Of these, 247 patients without evident abnormalities (control group), while 105 patients diagnosed with colorectal polyps (patient group). Serum lipid profile molecules and their derivative indexes were then compared between the two groups. Results The patient group exhibited significantly higher levels of total cholesterol (TC) and apolipoprotein B (ApoB) compared to the control group (p<0.05). In males, the patient group displayed elevated levels of ApoB and ApoB/ApoA1 ratio compared to the control group (p<0.05). Additionally, the triglycerides (TG) and TG/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) ratios were significantly higher in the multiple polyps group than in the single polyp group (p<0.05). Furthermore, the HDL-C and HDL-C/ApoA1 ratio levels were higher in the adenomatous polyp group when compared to the non-adenomatous polyp group (p<0.05). Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that total cholesterol (TC), TG, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), TC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio were risk factors for the occurrence of colorectal polyps (p<0.05). ROC curve analyses revealed that TC, ApoB, and ApoB/ApoA1 ratio were associated with colorectal polyps. No significant difference in BMI between the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusions The incidence and progression of colorectal polyps are linked to serum lipid molecules and their derivative indexes. Dyslipidemia may increase the risk of colorectal polyps, potentially leading to colorectal cancer (CRC).

Abstract
Resumen
Objetivos
Investigar el papel del IMC, las moléculas del perfil lipídico en suero y los cocientes lipoproteicos en los pólipos colorrectales.
Métodos
En un análisis retrospectivo, se incluyó a 352 sujetos sometidos a una colonoscopia en nuestro centro, de los cuales 247 no mostraron ninguna alteración evidente (grupo control), mientras que 105 recibieron un diagnóstico de uno o múltiples pólipos (grupo de pacientes). Se compararon las moléculas del perfil lipídico sérico y los cocientes lipoproteicos de los dos grupos.
Resultados
El grupo de pacientes mostró niveles significativamente mayores de colesterol total (CT) y apolipoproteína B (ApoB) que el grupo de control (p<0,05). Entre los hombres, el grupo de pacientes mostró niveles de ApoB y una relación ApoB/ApoA1 superiores a los del grupo de control (p<0,05). Así mismo, los niveles de triglicéridos (TG) y la relación TG/C-HDL (colesterol de lipoproteínas de alta densidad) fueron significativamente más elevados en el grupo de pólipos múltiples que en el de un solo pólipo (p<0,05). Además, los niveles de C-HDL y la relación C-HDL/ApoA1 fueron más altos en el grupo con pólipos adenomatosos que en el de no adenomatosos (p<0,05). El análisis de regresión logística múltiple identificó al CT, TG, LDL-C y a los cocientes CT/C-HDL, TG/C-HDL y C-LDL/C-HDL como factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de pólipos colorrectales (p<0,05). Los análisis de la curva ROC revelaron una asociación entre el CT, la ApoB, y la relación ApoB/ApoA1 y los pólipos colorrectales. Por otro lado, no se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el IMC entre los dos grupos (p>0,05).
Conclusiones
La incidencia y evolución de los pólipos colorrectales están relacionados con las moléculas del perfil lipídico en suero y los cocientes lipoproteicos de las mismas. La dislipidemia podría incrementar el riesgo de desarrollar pólipos colorrectales, pudiendo derivar posteriormente en el desarrollo de cáncer colorrectal (CRC).

Abstract
Background Vernonia auriculifera Hiern (Asteraceae) is among Ethiopian herbal medicines that are traditionally used to treat skin and gastrointestinal cancers. In this study, the chemopreventive potential of Vernonia auriculifera leaf extract in dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced colorectal carcinogenesis in rats was investigated. Methods Rats were assigned to nine groups (normal, positive, and negative control groups, and three pre- and three post-initiation groups). Except for the normal control group (administered with 1 mL/100 g distilled water), the remaining eight groups were given DMH (20 mg/kg) intraperitoneally (ip) for 15 consecutive weeks to induce colorectal tumours. The extract was given orally to the pre-initiation and post-initiation groups at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg before and after the induction of cancer, respectively. The positive control group was treated with aspirin (60 mg/kg/day) orally for the whole experimental period. Parameters including body weight, average tumour number, size, progression, incidence, total cholesterol, serum total protein, and triglyceride levels were determined. The cytotoxic activity of the extract in Caco-2 cells was evaluated using the MTT assay, and the antioxidant activity of the extract was also assessed using 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazine (DPPH) and reducing power methods. Moreover, total phenol and flavonoid contents were determined using appropriate methods. Results Rats treated with the extract showed a lower incidence of up to 50% in the pre-initiation higher dose, average number (p<0.05),and size (p<0.05) of tumours compared to untreated rats. It also inhibited colorectal cancer-associated increases in serum total cholesterol and triglycerides. The extract's IC50 value in the MTT assay was found to be higher than 200 µg/mL. The extract had an IC50 of 74.88 ± 0.86 µg/mL and 84.69 ± 2.02 µg/mL in the reducing power and DPPH assays, respectively. Total flavonoid and phenol contents were 14.51 ± 0.41 mg quercetin acid equivalent/gm and 47.37 ± 0.72 mg gallic acid equivalent/gm of the crude extract, respectively. Conclusion The findings collectively indicated that the leaves of V. auriculifera possess chemopreventive activity, probably mediated through antioxidant mechanisms, which supports the traditional claim.

Obesity and incidence of colorectal polyps: a case-controlled study. Ann Med Surg (Lond) 2023; 85:306-310. Abstract
Previous essays have presented possible concordance between obesity and colorectal polyp development. However, neither for the hypothesis nor for the details general consensus exists. This study aimed to evaluate the association between higher BMI rather than the normal and colorectal polyp presentation and characteristics if any. Methods Eligible patients based on study criteria who were candidates for total colonoscopy examination enrolled in this case-controlled trial. Controls had normal colonoscopy reports. A positive colonoscopy for any kind of polyp was followed by a histopathological study. Demographic data also was registered, and patients were categorized according to the calculated BMI. Groups were matched by both gender and status of tobacco abuse. Finally, the outcomes of colonoscopy and histopathological studies were compared between groups. Results A total of 141 and 125 persons investigated, respectively, as patients and controls. Possible effects of gender, tobacco abuse, and cigarette smoking were declined by participants matching. Hence, we found no significant difference between groups regarding the latter variables (P>0.05). Colorectal polyps were found absolutely more in BMI>25 kg/m-2 rather than in lesser values (P<0.001). However, there was no obvious difference in the incidence of colorectal polyps between groups categorized as overweight and obese (P>0.05). Namely, even weighing over could be the risk for colorectal polyp development. Additionally, it was more expected to find neoplastic adenomatous polyp(s) with high-graded dysplasia in BMI>25 kg/m-2 (P<0.001). Conclusion Even little changes in BMI further than the normal values can independently increase the risk of developing dysplastic adenomatous colorectal polyp(s) significantly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As the third most common type of cancer in the United States, colorectal cancer (CRC) was previously thought to be rare in young populations. Despite a decrease in the overall incidence of CRC, the rate of new cases under 50 years old has been continuously increasing. AIM The purpose of our study was to analyze risk factors of young-onset CRC. METHODS Commercially available software platform, Explorys, was used to extract data from a collective healthcare database electronically. RESULTS In this database, 13,800 young adults (age 20-50) were diagnosed with primary colorectal malignancy. Compared to subjects with a previous family history of CRC who had an odds ratio of 17.78, those diagnosed with primary malignant neoplasm of breast and inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's) had odds ratios of 16.94, 4.4, and 3.7 for young-onset CRC, respectively. Patients with a history of alcohol abuse, smoking, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia had higher chances of developing young-onset CRC. In addition, the odds of CRC were lower in Hispanic ethnicity in comparison to Caucasians (OR: 0.54), with no statically significant differences between Caucasian, African American, and Asian populations. CONCLUSION Currently, this is an expansive study investigating the risk factors for early-onset CRC. The analysis showed factors such as family and individual history of IBD to have high association with early onset. Notably, an individual history of breast malignancy was strongly associated with early-onset CRC.

Abstract
The incidence of colorectal polyps is rising. Certain types of polyps are considered to be the precursor lesions for colorectal cancers. To investigate the prevalence and related factors of colorectal polyps in Chinese subjects, we first performed a cross-sectional study. A total of 3066 subjects were documented, and the prevalence of colorectal polyps was 18.1%. Then we evaluated the incidence and risk factors of polyps via a retrospective cohort study in the same population. 561 subjects who received at least twice surveillance colonoscopies with available reports during the study period and had no polyp at the first endoscopy were included in the retrospective cohort study, of whom 19.1% developed colorectal polyps. Regular smoking was independently associated with the presence and development of colorectal polyps. Further analyses indicated that polyps were associated with smoking status, daily cigarette consumption, and drinking habit. Moreover, smoking tends to be more relavent to rectal, small and single polyp. In conclusion, colorectal polyp is a common disease in China. Exploring the epidemiology and risk factors may improve the prevention of colorectal polyps, even colorectal cancer.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) represented the second cause of mortality among cancer patients. Long noncoding RNAs and microRNAs (miRNAs) serve as noninvasive biomarkers for CRC surveillance and introduce new therapeutic approaches. LINC00657 and miR-106a expression levels play a pivotal role in CRC. This study included 190 Egyptian subjects, and the expression levels of LINC00657 and miR-106a in serum were measured by using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. We found that upregulation of LINC00657 and downregulation of miR-106a are significantly associated with the development of CRC. Also, a positive correlation was detected between their serum levels. In addition, serum LINC00657 can distinguish adenomatous polyposis (AP) patients and/or ulcerative colitis (UC) patients from controls. Also the miRNA-106a expression level discriminates AP but not UC from healthy individuals. Our study cited new diagnostic biomarkers for CRC, AP, and UC among Egyptians in addition to be noninvasive screening tools for CRC in both healthy subjects and those having precancerous lesions. © 2019 IUBMB Life, 71(9):1322-1335, 2019.

Abstract
The incidence and prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and colorectal cancer (CRC) has been rising in developed countries. The association between these two diseases has been widely studied and reported. Less evidence is available about the relationship between MS and CRC precancerous lesions (adenomatous polyps, adenomas). The aim of this paper is to present an overview of our scientific understanding of that topic and its implication in clinical practice. One of the principal goals of current CRC secondary prevention efforts is to detect and remove the precancerous lesions in individuals with an average CRC risk to prevent the development of invasive cancer. MS is not currently considered a high-risk CRC factor and is therefore not included in the guidelines of organized screening programs. However, in light of growing scientific evidence, the approach to patients with MS should be changed. Metabolic risk factors for the development of adenomas and cancers are the same - obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus type 2. Therefore, the key issue in the near future is the development of a simple scoring system, easy to use in clinical practice, which would identify individuals with high metabolic risk of colorectal neoplasia and would be used for individual CRC secondary prevention strategies. Currently, such scoring systems have been published based on Asian (Asia-Pacific Colorectal Screening Score; APCS) and Polish populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although data exists showing that uncontrolled lipid levels in white and black patients is associated with colorectal adenomas, there are currently no studies looking only at the Hispanic population. PURPOSE With the rapid increase in the Hispanic population, we aimed to look at their risk of colorectal adenomas in association with lipid levels. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 1473 patients undergoing colonoscopy from 2009 to 2011 at a community hospital. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-squared for categorical variables and t test for continuous variables with age-, gender-, and race-adjusted odds ratios. Unconditional logistic regression model was used to estimate 95 % confidence intervals (CI). SAS 9.3 software was used to perform all statistical analysis. RESULTS In our general population, there was an association with elevated triglyceride levels greater than 150 and presence of multiple colorectal adenomas with odds ratio (OR) 1.60 (1.03, 2.48). There was an association with proximal colon adenomas and cholesterol levels between 200 and 239 with OR 1.57 (1.07, 2.30), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels of greater than 130 with OR 1.54 (1.04, 2.30). There was no association between high-density lipoproteins (HDL) levels and colorectal adenomas. The Hispanic population showed no statistical correlation between elevated triglycerides, cholesterol, or LDL with the presence, size, location, or multiplicity of colorectal adenomas. CONCLUSIONS We found a significant correlation between elevated lipid levels and colorectal adenomas in white and black patients; however, there was no such association in the Hispanic population. This finding can possibly be due to environmental factors such as dietary, colonic flora, or genetic susceptibility, which fosters further investigation and research.
