Abstract
Native Americans are disproportionately affected by cardiovascular disease in comparison with other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Previous research has analyzed risk factors, quantified prevalence rates, and examined outcomes of cardiovascular disease in Native Americans, yet few studies have considered the role of societal and psychological factors on the increased burden of cardiovascular disease in Native Americans. Modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including poor nutrition, reduced physical activity, obesity, and increased substance use, are exacerbated in Native American communities due to cultural and historical factors. Further, Native Americans have endured historical trauma and continue to experience additional financial and healthcare stressors, resulting in increased levels of chronic stress. Chronic activation of stress responses through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal and autonomic nervous system increases inflammation and cardiovascular dysfunction resulting in an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is critical to examine the connection between these stressors and the cardiovascular health disparities in Native American communities to create effective strategies to improve health outcomes.

Abstract
There is a complex interrelationship between the nervous system and the cardiovascular system. Comorbidities of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) with mental disorders, and vice versa, are prevalent. Adults with mental disorders such as anxiety and depression have a higher risk of developing CVD, and people with CVD have an increased risk of being diagnosed with mental disorders. Oxidative stress is one of the many pathways associated with the pathophysiology of brain and cardiovascular disease. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase (NOX) is one of the major generators of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mammalian cells, as it is the enzyme that specifically produces superoxide. This review summarizes recent findings on the consequences of NOX activation in thrombosis and depression. It also discusses the therapeutic effects and pharmacological strategies of NOX inhibitors in CVD and brain disorders. A better comprehension of these processes could facilitate the development of new therapeutic approaches for the prevention and treatment of the comorbidity of thrombosis and depression.

Abstract
The genus Acorus, a perennial monocotyledonous-class herb and part of the Acoraceae family, is widely distributed in the temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Acorus is rich in biological activities and can be used to treat various diseases of the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and digestive system, including Alzheimer's disease, depression, epilepsy, hyperlipidemia, and indigestion. Recently, it has been widely used to improve eutrophic water and control heavy-metal-polluted water. Thus far, only three species of Acorus have been reported in terms of chemical components and pharmacological activities. Previously published reviews have not further distinguished or comprehensively expounded the chemical components and pharmacological activities of Acorus plants. By carrying out a literature search, we collected documents closely related to Acorus published from 1956 to 2022. We then performed a comprehensive and systematic review of the genus Acorus from different perspectives, including botanical aspects, ethnic applications, phytochemistry aspects, and pharmacological aspects. Our aim was to provide a basis for further research and the development of new concepts.

Abstract
After previous earthquakes, high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases including venous thromboembolism (VTE) has been reported. We performed venous screening at the site of Hokkaido East Iburi Earthquake which happened at 6th September 2018. VTE screening using ultrasound sonography was performed for total 7 days at Atsuma town, Mukawa town and Abira town (total 9 shelters). Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) was found in 19 of 195 evacuees (9.7%), including 8 fresh thrombus cases (4.1%). On multivariable analysis of evacuees and shelter environment factors, systolic blood pressure, use of cardboard bed and toilet environment were significant predictor of DVT. Introduction and setting-up of cardboard beds were found as an important shelter environment factor. (This is secondary publication from Jpn J Phlebol 2021; 32(1): 5-10.).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of 24-h shift work on autonomic nervous system function via heart rate variability (HRV) methodologies. METHODS Electronic databases (indexed in either PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, or OpenDissertations) were searched from January 1964 to March 2023. A modified Downs and Black checklist was used for assessing methodological quality and the Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to evaluate the quality of evidence. Study design, study population, study sample, shift work description, and assessment of HRV metrics and methods were extracted from each study. FINDINGS A total of 58 478 study articles were identified, of which 12 articles met inclusion criteria. Sample sizes varied from eight to 60 participants, with the ratio of low- to high-frequency HRV (LF/HF) as the most common frequency-domain variable reported. Of the nine included studies that observed LF/HF, three (33.3%) demonstrated a significant increase after 24-h shift work. Moreover, of the five studies that reported HF, two (40%) noted a significant decrease after 24-h shift work. When observing risk of bias, two (16.6%) studies were low quality, five (41.7%) were moderate quality, and five (41.7%) were high quality. INTERPRETATION There were inconsistent findings demonstrating an effect of 24-h shift work on autonomic function, with a suggested shift away from parasympathetic dominance. Discrepancies in HRV methodologies, such as the duration of recordings and hardware used for measurement, may have contributed to the disparity in findings. In addition, differences in roles and responsibilities across occupations may explain the incongruence in findings across studies.

Abstract
Stress is an important risk factor for modern chronic diseases, with distinct influences in males and females. The sex specificity of the mammalian stress response contributes to the sex-dependent development and impacts of coronary artery disease (CAD). Compared to men, women appear to have greater susceptibility to chronic forms of psychosocial stress, extending beyond an increased incidence of mood disorders to include a 2- to 4-fold higher risk of stress-dependent myocardial infarction in women, and up to 10-fold higher risk of Takotsubo syndrome-a stress-dependent coronary-myocardial disorder most prevalent in post-menopausal women. Sex differences arise at all levels of the stress response: from initial perception of stress to behavioural, cognitive, and affective responses and longer-term disease outcomes. These fundamental differences involve interactions between chromosomal and gonadal determinants, (mal)adaptive epigenetic modulation across the lifespan (particularly in early life), and the extrinsic influences of socio-cultural, economic, and environmental factors. Pre-clinical investigations of biological mechanisms support distinct early life programming and a heightened corticolimbic-noradrenaline-neuroinflammatory reactivity in females vs. males, among implicated determinants of the chronic stress response. Unravelling the intrinsic molecular, cellular and systems biological basis of these differences, and their interactions with external lifestyle/socio-cultural determinants, can guide preventative and therapeutic strategies to better target coronary heart disease in a tailored sex-specific manner.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) patients who develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) can suffer acute lung injury, or even death. Early identification of severe disease is essential in order to control COVID-19 and improve prognosis. Oxidative stress (OS) appears to play an important role in COVID-19 pathogenesis; we therefore conceived a study of the potential discriminative ability of serum biomarkers in patients with ARDS and those with mild to moderate disease (non-ARDS). 60 subjects were enrolled in a single-centre, prospective cohort study of consecutively admitted patients: 29 ARDS/31 non-ARDS. Blood samples were drawn and marker levels analysed by spectrophotometry and immunoassay techniques. C-reactive protein (CRP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and ferritin were significantly higher in ARDS versus non-ARDS cases at hospital admission. Leukocytes, LDH, ferritin, interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were also significantly elevated in ARDS compared to non-ARDS patients during the hospital stay. Total thiol (TT) was found to be significantly lower in ARDS. Conversely, D-dimer, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and advanced glycosylated end products (AGE) were elevated. Leukocytes, LDH, CRP, ferritin and IL-6 were found to be significantly higher in non-survivors. However, lymphocyte, tumour necrosis factor beta (TGF-β), and TT were lower. In summary, our results support the potential value of TT, ferritin and LDH as prognostic biomarkers for ARDS development in COVID-19 patients, distinguishing non-ARDS from ARDS (AUCs = 0.92; 0.91; 0.89) in a fast and cost-effective manner. These oxidative/inflammatory parameters appear to play an important role in COVID-19 monitoring and can be used in the clinical management of patients.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate complete blood cell count parameters including red blood cell indices, white blood cell subtypes, and platelet indices for predicting deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A total of 71 (44 male and 27 female) patients with acute femoral and popliteal DVT diagnosed by doppler ultrasonography during a period of seven years (2011-2017) were included in the study. By matching age and gender, 142 (88 male and 54 female) subjects diagnosed with venous insufficiency in the same time interval were assigned as control group. Data were obtained by reviewing hospital records of the study participants, including clinical and demographic characteristics and complete blood cell parameters. Frequencies of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic renal failure, and coronary arterial disease were higher in DVT group as compared to non-DVT group (p<0.05). Hemoglobin and lymphocyte values were lower, and red blood cell distribution width, neutrophil, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, and platelet to lymphocyte ratio higher in DVT group as compared with non-DVT group (p<0.05). There was no significant between-group difference in terms of mean corpuscular volume, platelet, mean platelet volume, mean platelet volume to platelet ratio, and platelet distribution width (p>0.05). Hypertension, hemoglobin, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, and platelet to lymphocyte ratio were independent risk factors for DVT. We found that hypertension, anemia, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, and platelet to lymphocyte ratio were independent risk factors for DVT. In particular, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and hemoglobin may be used as novel, inexpensive, and reliable diagnostic tools for DVT.

Abstract
AIMS To determine whether renal denervation (RDN) in hypertensive patients affects the platelet activation status. METHODS AND RESULTS We investigated the effect of RDN on the platelet activation status in 41 hypertensive patients undergoing RDN. Ambulatory blood pressure (BP), plasma sympathetic neurotransmitter Neuropeptide Y, and platelet activation markers were measured at baseline, at 3 months, and 6 months after RDN. RDN significantly decreased BP at 3 months (150.6 ± 11.3/80.9 ± 11.4 mmHg to 144.7 ± 12.0/77.1 ± 11.1 mmHg; P < 0.01) and at 6 months (144.3 ± 13.8/78.3 ± 11.1 mmHg; P < 0.01). Plasma levels of the sympathetic neurotransmitter Neuropeptide Y, an indicator of sympathetic nerve activity, were significantly decreased at 3 months (0.29 ± 0.11 ng/mL to 0.23 ± 0.11 ng/mL; P < 0.0001) and at 6 months (0.22 ± 0.12 ng/mL; P < 0.001) after RDN. This was associated with a reduction in platelet membrane P-selectin expression (3 months, P < 0.05; 6 months, P < 0.05), soluble P-selectin (6 months, P < 0.05), circulating numbers of platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) (3 months, P < 0.001; 6 months, P < 0.01), and phosphatidylserine expressing EVs (3 months, P < 0.001; 6 months, P < 0.0001), indicative of a reduction in platelet activation status and procoagulant activity. Only patients who responded to RDN with a BP reduction showed inhibition of P-selectin expression at 3 months (P < 0.05) and 6 months (P < 0.05) as well as reduction of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa activation at 3 months (P < 0.05). Notably, 13 patients who took aspirin did not show significant reduction in platelet P-selectin expression following RDN. CONCLUSION Our results imply a connection between the sympathetic nervous system and the platelet activation status and provide a potential mechanistic explanation by which RDN can have favourable effects towards reducing cardiovascular complications.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have physiological roles as second messengers, but can also exert detrimental modifications on DNA, proteins and lipids if resulting from enhanced generation or reduced antioxidant defense (oxidative stress). Venous thrombus (DVT) formation and resolution are influenced by ROS through modulation of the coagulation, fibrinolysis, proteolysis and the complement system, as well as the regulation of effector cells such as platelets, endothelial cells, erythrocytes, neutrophils, mast cells, monocytes and fibroblasts. Many conditions that carry an elevated risk of venous thrombosis, such as the Antiphospholipid Syndrome, have alterations in their redox homeostasis. Dietary and pharmacological antioxidants can modulate several important processes involved in DVT formation, but their overall effect is unknown and there are no recommendations regarding their use. The development of novel antioxidant treatments that aim to abrogate the formation of DVT or promote its resolution will depend on the identification of targets that enable ROS modulation confined to their site of interest in order to prevent off-target effects on physiological redox mechanisms. Subgroups of patients with increased systemic oxidative stress might benefit from unspecific antioxidant treatment, but more clinical studies are needed to bring clarity to this issue.

Abstract
The failure of mechanisms of natural anti-coagulation either due to genetic impairment or due to severe external injuries may result in a condition called thrombosis. This is believed to be the primary cause for a variety of life-threatening conditions such as: heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, thrombophlebitis, and deep venous thrombosis (DVT). The growing number of these incidents requires an alternative anti-coagulant or anti-thrombotic agent that has minimal side effects and improved efficiency. For decades, plant polyphenols, especially flavonoids, were known for their vital role in preventing various diseases such as cancer. Mitigating excessive oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) with anti-oxidant-rich flavonoids may reduce the risk of hyper-activation of platelets, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), pain, and thrombosis. Furthermore, flavonoids may mitigate endothelial dysfunction (ED), which generally correlates to the development of coronary artery and vascular diseases. Flavonoids also reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and atherothrombotic disease by inhibiting excessive tissue factor (TF) availability in the endothelium. Although the role of flavonoids in CVD is widely discussed, to the best of our knowledge, their role as anti-thrombotic lead has not been discussed. This review aims to focus on the biological uses of dietary flavonoids and their role in the treatment of various coagulation disorders, and may provide some potential lead to the drug discovery process in this area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of procoagulant state under prolonged hypoxic exposures and the complications and lack of specificity associated with use of existing anti-thrombotic agents have necessitated the search for safer and natural therapeutics. Codonopsis, a widely studied medicinal herb, has been reported to decrease whole blood viscosity but the bioactive ingredients involved, and their mechanism of action therein however remain to be investigated. PURPOSE The present study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of C. clematidea root extract and mechanism of action of its bioactive constituent flavonoid, Kaempferol, in ameliorating hypobaric hypoxia induced procoagulant state. METHODS Fingerprinting analysis of methanolic extract of C. clematidea root was performed by RP-HPLC. In vitro toxicity study was conducted using HUVEC cell line and in vivo acute and sub-acute toxicity were done according to OECD guidelines (section-4, number-420 and 407 respectively). Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 230-250 g were exposed to global hypoxia simulating an altitude of 7600 m (282 mmHg), in animal decompression chamber for 3, 7, 14 and 21 days for in vivo studies. Dose optimisation of the extract was done by quantification of Thromboxane A2 in the serum of hypoxic rats. C. clematidea root extract was also evaluated for its in vitro and in vivo antioxidant properties. Procoagulant changes were studied by biochemical plasma coagulation assays and expression analysis of the signalling molecules of the platelet activation cascade like vWF, platelet activation marker CD41, GpIb-IX-V (CD42), Lyn kinase, p-PI3K, p-ERK and p-PLCγ were conducted to investigate C. clematidea mediated signalling mechanisms. RESULTS Methanolic extract of C. clematidea root showed improved antioxidant status and improvement in bleeding time and in vitro coagulation assays like pT, aPTT, INR. Decreased concentrations of D-Dimers along with that of platelet activation marker CD41 and serum concentration of Thromboxane A2 were observed in C. clematidea root extract supplemented hypoxic animals. Phosphorylation of Lyn kinase, was reduced despite increase in concentration of activating ligand vWF. CONCLUSION C. clematidea root extract was effective in preventing hypoxia induced platelet activation and resultant procoagulant state by inhibiting Lyn kinase, a serine threonine kinase effector of vWF signalling cascade.

Abstract
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Val66Met polymorphism has been associated with increased susceptibility to develop mood disorders and recently it has been also linked with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Interestingly, stressful conditions unveil the anxious/depressive-like behavioral phenotype in heterozygous BDNFVal66Met (BDNFVal/Met) mice, suggesting an important relationship in terms of gene-environment interaction (GxE). However, the interplay between stress and BDNFVal/Met in relation to CVD is completely unknown. Here, we showed that BDNFVal/Met mice display a greater propensity to arterial thrombosis than wild type BDNFVal/Val mice after 7 days of restraint stress (RS). RS markedly increased the number of leukocytes and platelets, and induced hyper-responsive platelets as showed by increased circulating platelet/leukocyte aggregates and enhanced expression of P-selectin and GPIIbIIIa in heterozygous mutant mice. In addition, stressed BDNFVal/Met mice had a greater number of large and reticulated platelets but comparable number and maturation profile of bone marrow megakaryocytes compared to BDNFVal/Val mice. Interestingly, RS led to a significant reduction of BDNF expression accompanied by an increased activity of tissue factor in the aorta of both BDNFVal/Val and BDNFVal/Met mice. In conclusion, we provide evidence that sub-chronic stress unveils prothrombotic phenotype in heterozygous BDNF Val66Met mice affecting both the number and functionality of blood circulating cells, and the expression of key thrombotic molecules in aorta. Human studies will be crucial to understand whether this GxE interaction need to be taken into account in risk stratification of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although catatonia can occur secondary to a general medical condition, catatonia itself has been known to lead to various medical compolications. Although case reports on the association of catatonia with subsequent medical complications have been documented, no comprehensive large-scale study has been performed. To investigate specific medical complications after catatonia, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of specific medical complications of schizophrenia patients with catatonia. METHODS The 1719 schizophrenia inpatients in our study were categorized into two groups: the catatonia group, i.e., those who exhibited catatonic stupor while they were hospitalized, and the noncatatonia group, i.e., those who never exhibited catatonic stupor. Differences between the two groups in the occurrence of subsequent medical complications were examined using linear and logistic regression analyses, and models were adjusted for potentially confounding factors. RESULTS The catatonia group had an increased risk for mortality (odds ratio = 4.8, 95% confidence interval = 2.0-10.6, p < .01) and certain specific medical complications, i.e., pneumonia, urinary tract infection, sepsis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, rhabdomyolysis, dehydration, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, urinary retention, decubitus, arrhythmia, renal failure, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, hypernatremia, and liver dysfunction (all p values < .01, except for deep venous thrombosis, p = .04 in the multiple linear regression analysis). CONCLUSIONS Catatonic stupor in schizophrenia substantially raises the risk for specific medical complications and mortality. Hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, dehydration, and immobility, which are frequently involved in catatonia, might contribute to these specific medical complications. In catatonia, meticulous care for both mental and medical conditions should be taken to reduce the risk of adverse medical consequences.

Abstract
Environmental chronic stress (ECS) has been identified as a trigger of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Changes in redox balance, enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and platelet hyperreactivity were detected in both ECS and ACS. However, the mechanisms by which ECS predisposes to thrombosis are not fully understood. Here, we investigated the impact of ECS on platelet activation and megakaryopoiesis in mice and the effect of Apocynin in this experimental setting. ECS induced by 4 days of forced swimming stress (FSS) treatment predisposed to arterial thrombosis and increased oxidative stress (e.g., plasma malondialdehyde levels). Interestingly, Apocynin treatment prevented these alterations. In addition, FSS induced abnormal megakaryopoiesis increasing the number and the maturation state of bone marrow megakaryocytes (MKs) and affecting circulating platelets. In particular, a higher number of large and reticulated platelets with marked functional activation were detected after FSS. Apocynin decreased the total MK number and prevented their ability to generate ROS without affecting the percentage of CD42d+ cells, and it reduced the platelet hyperactivation in stressed mice. In conclusion, Apocynin restores the physiological megakaryopoiesis and platelet behavior, preventing the detrimental effect of chronic stress on thrombosis, suggesting its potential use in the occurrence of thrombosis associated with ECS.

Abstract
Background Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a frequent cardiovascular disorder. It is among the main causes of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients and, at the same time, can be easily avoided. Studies clarified that there are a variety of factors which can be significantly associated with the development of DVT in hospitalized patients. Objective to identify frequency and factors associated with occurrence of DVT among hypertensive patients referred to KAU hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Methods A cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted from October 2016 to March, 2017. All hypertensive patients referred to or admitted to the hospital departments and who were suspected to have DVT and subjected to Doppler examination were included in the study. A questionnaire was designed to obtain data about DVT frequency among participants and factors associated with the development of DVT among them. Data was collected through face to face interviews of patients included in the study. Results DVT was detected in 13.5 % of the studied hypertensive patients. Increased age and gender had no significant association with the development of DVT among the studied patients. In addition, other studied factors and comorbidities had no significant role in DVT development among the study participants. Conclusion Knowing the most common risk factors and their significance in developing DVT is essential for early detection of DVT to prevent it, especially for hypertensive patients. Awareness campaigns should be held more often in different neighborhoods of the city.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A growing body of literature suggests that migraineurs, particularly those with aura, have an increased risk for ischemic stroke, but not via enhanced atherosclerosis. The theory that micro-emboli induced ischemia provokes cortical spreading depression (ie, symptomatic aura) in migraineurs but transient ischemic attacks in others highlights a potential role for hypercoagulability as a link between migraine (with aura) and stroke. AIM Our objective is to summarize the literature evaluating the association of migraine with various acquired or inheritable thrombophilic states, including those related to elevated estrogen levels, endothelial activation and dysfunction, antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), deficiency of coagulation inhibitors, and presence of certain genetic polymorphisms. FINDINGS Although definitive studies are lacking, a preponderance of available evidence links migraine, and especially aura, to increased levels of estradiol (eg, oral contraceptive pill [OCP] use, pregnancy), thrombo- and erythrocytosis, von Willebrand factor (vWF) antigen, fibrinogen, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) antigen, and endothelial microparticles. Studies of a link to migraine are conflicting for aPL, homocysteine, Protein S, and the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism. No association with migraine was found in meta-analyses of Factor V Leiden, and of prothrombin gene mutation. Within a large, young ischemic stroke sample, migraine with aura was associated with a thrombophilic state and with patent foramen ovale (PFO). In the non-stroke population, meta-analyses show an association of PFO and migraine with aura (MA), but two population-based studies do not support the link. RECOMMENDATIONS For persons with MA and (1) a personal history or family history of thrombosis, or (2) MRI evidence of micro-vascular ischemia or of stroke, an evaluation for hypercoagulability is warranted. In cases of MA alone, consider screening for markers of endothelial activation (eg, vWF, high sensitivity c-reactive protein [hs CRP], and fibrinogen). Rigorous management of other stroke risk factors is paramount, but efficacy of anti-thrombotic agents in the treatment of migraine is unproven. Closure of PFO is not routinely recommended based on negative randomized trials.
