Abstract
OBJECTIVE Current cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) methods cannot demonstrate the temporomandibular joint fossa-condyle relationship in real time. This study aimed to print a simple guide plate with marker points and capture a single CBCT scan based on positional changes of the marker points to align the maxilla and mandible positions. METHODS The three groups were divided into the intercuspal position, 5 mm unilateral elevation, and 10 mm bilateral elevation to simulate different patient occlusal situations after treatment. The maxillary and mandibular positions were aligned according to points marked on the reference plate. Then, the deviation was compared between the three-dimensional images obtained employing this method and those reconstructed from CBCT. A one-way analysis of variance was conducted, and post hoc analyses were performed using the Tamhane's T2 multiple comparison test (α = 0.05). RESULTS The intercuspal position had a mean deviation value of - 0.1313 with an RMS of 0.4411. The unilateral elevation had a mean deviation value of 0.3253 with an RMS of 1.2707. The bilateral elevation had a mean deviation value of - 0.0537 with an RMS of 1.281. There were no statistical differences among the three groups at α = 0.05. CONCLUSION This method can reduce the number of CBCT scans to one and predict the relative positions of the maxilla and mandible when changes in joint position occur from occlusion. This method can increase the accuracy of treatment, assist novice doctors to adjust the occlusal height, provide a visual means to extract and verify the treatment effect, reduce the number of diagnoses and treatments to a certain extent, reduce the radiation damage during treatment, and can be better applied to the chair side, providing convenience for patients and doctors. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The method described in this study used a face scan, reference plate, and the first CBCT of the participant combined with 3D reconstruction to clinically observe the temporomandibular joint. This method can reduce the number of CBCT scans required, amount of radiation exposure, patient burden, and number of clinic visits while increasing the comfort level of patients.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of anterior disc displacement without osteoarthritis (ADDwoOA) on the morphology of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) utilizing three-dimensional (3D) models of 23 asymptomatic individuals and 30 ADDwoOA patients. Statistical analyses between the groups were performed by measuring 10 morphological parameters. ADDwoOA patients showed significantly decreased levels of the sagittal ramus angle (SRA) and joint spaces compared with asymptomatic subjects. Moreover, the patients who had recovered exhibited normal joint spaces levels. Consequently, ADDwoOA caused the condyles to move backward and upward, approaching the articular fossa. Joint spaces can serve as an important observation during the treatment of ADD.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to determine the changes in the temporomandibular joint due to ethnicity and to reveal gender differences. METHODS This retrospective study included the evaluation of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 110 patients (220 temporomandibular joint {TMJs}), 64 dentulous (32 females, 32 males) and 46 edentulous (18 females, 28 males). Anterior, superior, and posterior joint spaces and the roof of the glenoid fossa (GF) were measured in sagittal views. Shapiro-Wilk test, independent sample t-test, and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to determine significant differences between dentulous and edentulous patients. RESULTS The difference in terms of anterior and posterior joint space was statistically significant (p=0.005, p˂0.001). However, no statistically significant difference was found in the upper joint space (p=0.227). A statistically significant difference was not found in GF roof thickness (p=0.229). CONCLUSIONS Upper joint space and GF roof thickness were not associated with edentulism. However, this situation is directly related to both posterior and anterior joint spaces, and this relationship manifests itself as a decrease in the posterior joint space and an increase in the anterior joint space with edentulism.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlations between joint space and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) components and the compressive states of the disc and condyle subsequent to joint space changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 240 TMJs were categorized according to disc morphology, disc position, and condylar osseous condition. The two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) measurements were compared. The functional joint space (FJS) and disc areas on closed- and open-mouth images (DA-C and DA-O) were also calculated, and the joint space was measured in five directions. Different groups of TMJ components were compared. A spring model was used to simulate the effect of condylar displacement on the disc and condyle. RESULTS Disc morphology was strongly correlated with its position. The measurements were equivalent between 2D and 3D methods. DA-C and FJS differed significantly between groups. The DA-C to FJS ratio differed between the Class 2 and Class 3 groups and between disc displacement groups with and without reduction. Altered disc morphology and position were correlated with significant changes in joint space in the 60°, 90°, and 120° directions. Despite minor discrepancies among condylar osseous conditions, reduced joint space was correlated with bone destruction at the corresponding site. The spring model stimulation revealed that condylar displacement caused elevated stresses on the disc and condyle. CONCLUSIONS Condylar displacement causes joint space alterations while exerting compressive pressure on both the disc and condyle. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Proper condylar positioning within the fossa is recommended to ensure sufficient articular disc accommodation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our study aimed to use three-dimensional (3D) spatial morphological measurement methods to compare the influence of Twin-Block and clear functional aligners on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of adolescent Class II division 1 malocclusion mandibular retraction patients. We also aimed to explore the similarities and differences in the effects on the TMJ upon using Twin-Block and clear functional aligner. METHODS Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data of 49 patients with Class II division 1 malocclusion (Twin-Block group: 24; clear functional aligner group: 25) were collected before and after functional orthodontic treatment, and a 3D model of the TMJ was reconstructed using MIMICS 21.0 software. Eighteen measurement parameters, including the anterior, superior, and posterior joint spaces, were measured and compared using the 3D model. RESULTS After the two groups underwent functional appliance treatment, the height, volume, and surface area of the condyle, length of the mandibular ramus and mandibular length increased; The retro-displaced condyle moved to the middle position of the articular fossa, while the rest of the condylar position did not change significantly. Remodeling of the articular fossa after treatment was not evident. The superior joint space of the clear functional aligner group increased, but there was no significant change after Twin-Block appliances treatment. CONCLUSIONS Both appliances promote condylar growth and sagittal and vertical development of the mandible in adolescent Class II division 1 malocclusion mandibular retraction patients. The length of the mandibular ramus showed a more significant increase following treatment with the Twin-Block appliances than with clear function aligners.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The temporomandibular joint diseases have been associated with various predisposing factors. Joint spaces, articular eminence height and inclination, and the shapes of the condylar and glenoid fossa have all been shown to vary in temporomandibular joint diseases (TMD) patients. Advanced imaging techniques like cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) have been employed to estimate these parameters. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The aim of the current study was to investigate the condylar morphology, condylar and glenoid fossa shapes, and assessment of joint spaces, such as anterior, posterior, superior, lateral, and medial spaces, through CBCT slices in coronal and sagittal planes and compare them between the control group and TMD group. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was planned where 80 joints in 40 patients were assessed for the above parameters; group I consisted of healthy patients, and group II included those with temporomandibular joint diseases (TMDs). The articular eminence height and inclination were assessed on the midsagittal section. The condylar changes and shapes of the glenoid fossa and condyles, as well as the joint spaces, were assessed on the selected coronal and sagittal sections. RESULTS The condylar fossa had a triangular shape in the TMJ group and an oval shape in the control group. The results were highly significant (P = 0.000**). A highly significant difference in morphological parameters, such as AJS, PJS, SJS, MJS, LJS, articular eminence height, and inclination, was found between the two groups (P = 0.000**). The association of morphological parameters, such as AJS, PJS, SJS, MJS, LJS, and articular eminence height and inclination were compared with condylar and glenoid fossa shapes, where the association of superior joint space and articular eminence inclination was observed. A highly significant difference was noted between the two groups with regard to all the parameters with P=0.00*. CONCLUSION The articular eminence inclination, as well as the superior joint space, were found to be associated with the glenoid and condyle fossa shapes in the TMJ group. These observations would, therefore, help in the early diagnosis of temporomandibular joint diseases.

Abstract
This paper proposes a machine learning model using privileged information (LUPI) and normalized mutual information feature selection method (NMIFS) to build a robust and accurate framework to diagnose patients with Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis (TMJ OA). To build such a model, we employ clinical, quantitative imaging and additional biological markers as privileged information. We show that clinical features play a leading role in the TMJ OA diagnosis and quantitative imaging features, extracted from cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scans, improve the model performance. As the proposed LUPI model employs biological data in the training phase (which boosted the model performance), this data is unnecessary for the testing stage, indicating the model can be widely used even when only clinical and imaging data are collected. The model was validated using 5-fold stratified cross-validation with hyperparameter tuning to avoid the bias of data splitting. Our method achieved an AUC, specificity and precision of 0.81, 0.79 and 0.77, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate changes in the three-dimensional (3D) spatial morphology of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and condyle position in adult patients with Class II division 2 malocclusion using a 3D spatial measurement method and to investigate the similarities and differences in the effects of fixed appliance and clear aligner treatments on the TMJ. METHODS Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data of 47 adult patients with Class II division 2 malocclusion (25, fixed appliance group; 22, clear aligner group) were collected before and after treatment. Mimics 21.0 was used to reconstruct the TMJ 3D model. Fourteen measurement items, such as the anterior, upper, and posterior joint spaces, were measured directly on the 3D model and compared. RESULTS Post-orthodontic treatment, the shape and position of the condyle changed in adult patients with Class II division 2 malocclusion. Reduction in the anterior joint space and increase in the posterior joint space after orthodontic treatment were significant in both fixed appliance and clear aligner treatments; the condyle moved forward to the center of the fossa. The superior joint space and depth of the glenoid fossa increased after clear aligner treatment, but there was no significant change after fixed appliance treatment. CONCLUSIONS The condylar shape and position in patients with Class II division 2 malocclusion changed significantly post-treatment, indicating that the condyle undergoes adaptive reconstruction during orthodontic treatment in these patients. These results provide a reference for diagnosis, design of treatment plan, and monitoring of treatment in orthodontic clinics.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to measure the association between the disk position and condylar alteration in patients diagnosed with anterior disk displacement (ADD) of temporomandibular joint (TMJ). A retrospective cross-sectional study was designed, dividing into 4 groups: normal articular disk position (NADP) of unilateral ADD patients (n=10), ADD with reduction (ADDwR, n=16), ADD without reduction (ADDwoR, n=24), and healthy volunteers (HV, n=30) based on magnetic resonance imaging and cone-beam computed tomography. After morphologic parameters were calculated from 3-dimensional reconstructive images, differences in parameters with respect to ADD status were tested with analysis of variance and Fisher least significant difference multiple comparisons were performed. Condylar volume of ADDwR, ADDwoR, NADP, and HVs were 1768.29±404.19, 1467.13±438.20, 1814.48±753.60, and 1914.66±476.48 mm, respectively, showing a significant downward trend from healthy disk to a displaced one ( P <0.05). Same trend also found in condylar superficial area, with the condylar superficial area of the ADDwR, ADDwoR, NADP, and HVs were 842.56±138.78 mm, 748.52±157.42 mm, 842.87±263.00 mm, and 892.73±164.19 mm, respectively. From NADP to ADDwR to ADDwoR, superior joint space (SJS) was declined, [SJS (NADP) (2.10±0.91 mm) > SJS (ADDwR) (1.85±0.61 mm) > SJS (ADDwoR) (1.50±0.50 mm), P =0.034]; medial joint space was significantly associated with the different disk displacement types ( P(HV-ADDwR) =0.001; P(HV-ADDwoR) =0.021; P(NADP-ADDwR) =0.022; P(ADDwR-ADDwoR) =0.001). Our findings suggest that condylar volume and superficial area, and superior and medial joint space, albeit with a small sample size, are significantly associated with different disk displacement types, detection of which might therefore be worth exploring for assessing ADD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This pilot morphological study aimed to investigate the association between anterior disc displacement (ADD) and the status of the mandibular condyle and articular fossa. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-four patients were divided into a normal articular disc position group and an ADD with and without reduction group. Images reconstructed were used to determine multiple group comparisons of these three different types of disc position, and the diagnostic efficacy for the morphological parameters with significant group difference was analyzed to assess. RESULTS The condylar volume (CV), condylar superficial area (CSA), superior joint space (SJS), and medial joint space (MJS) all exhibited obvious changes (P < 0.05). Additionally, they all had a reliable diagnostic accuracy in differentiating between normal disc position and ADD with an AUC value from 0.723 to 0.858. Among them, the CV, SJS, and MJS (P < 0.05) had a significantly positive impact on the groups by analysis of multivariate logistic ordinal regression model. CONCLUSIONS The CV, CSA, SJS, and MJS are significantly associated with different disc displacement types. The condyle in ADD exhibited altered dimensions. These could be promising biometric markers for assessing ADD. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The morphological changes of mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa were significantly influenced by the status of disc displacement, and condyles with disc displacement had three-dimensionally altered condylar dimensions, irrespective of age and sex.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Morphological study is a common approach in the field of anterior disc displacement (ADD) pathology; however, analysis based on three-dimensional reconstructive imaging has not been investigated. This study investigated the association between ADD and the status of the mandibular condyle and articular fossa. METHODS Thirty-four patients were divided into three groups: normal articular disc position (NADP), anterior disc displacement with reduction (ADDwR), and anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDwoR). Multiple grouped comparisons of three different disc statuses were performed by Kruskal-Wallis H test and variance analysis respectively. Receiver-operating characteristic curve was plotted to assess the diagnostic efficacy of the morphological parameters. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the interfering factors of ADD. RESULTS The condylar volume (CV) and condylar superficial area (CSA) in the NADP, ADDwR, and ADDwoR groups exhibited obvious changes (P < 0.05). Both CV and superior joint space (SJS) presented a good diagnostic accuracy for NADP-ADDwoR [area under the curve (AUC)CV = 0.813; AUCSJS = 0.855)], and ADDwR-ADDwoR (AUCCV = 0.858; AUCSJS = 0.801). CSA presented a good diagnostic accuracy for ADDwR-ADDwoR (AUC = 0.813). A multivariate logistic ordinal regression model showed that the CV [odds ratio (OR) = 1.011; regression coefficient (RC) = 0.011, P = 0.018], SJS (OR, 8.817; RC = 2.177; P < 0.001), and medial joint space (MJS) (OR, 1.492; RC = 0.400; P = 0.047) had a significantly impact on the groups. CONCLUSION CV, CSA, SJS, and MJS were significantly associated with the different disc status, and the condyle in ADD exhibited 3-dimensionally altered dimensions. They could be considered as promising biometric markers to assess the ADD.

Abstract
Clinical examination of three-dimensional image data of compound anatomical objects, such as complex joints, remains a tedious process, demanding the time and the expertise of physicians. For instance, automation of the segmentation task of the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) has been hindered by its compound three-dimensional shape, multiple overlaid textures, an abundance of surrounding irregularities in the skull, and a virtually omnidirectional range of the jaw's motion-all of which extend the manual annotation process to more than an hour per patient. To address the challenge, we invent a new workflow for the 3D segmentation task: namely, we propose to segment empty spaces between all the tissues surrounding the object-the so-called negative volume segmentation. Our approach is an end-to-end pipeline that comprises a V-Net for bone segmentation, a 3D volume construction by inflation of the reconstructed bone head in all directions along the normal vector to its mesh faces. Eventually confined within the skull bones, the inflated surface occupies the entire "negative" space in the joint, effectively providing a geometrical/topological metric of the joint's health. We validate the idea on the CT scans in a 50-patient dataset, annotated by experts in maxillofacial medicine, quantitatively compare the asymmetry given the left and the right negative volumes, and automate the entire framework for clinical adoption.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the differences in the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) between patients with anterior disc displacement with reduction (ADDwR) and asymptomatic subjects by using 3D morphometric measurements. METHODS A total of 15 patients with ADDwR and 10 asymptomatic subjects were enrolled. Then, 3D models of the maxilla and mandible were reconstructed using MIMICS 20.0. Nine morphologic parameters of TMJs on both sides were measured on the 3D solid model. The differences in the parameters were analyzed between the patients and the asymptomatic subjects and between the left and right sides of each group. RESULTS The horizontal and coronal condylar angles on the ipsilateral side of the patients were significantly greater than those of the asymptomatic subjects (P<0.01). Meanwhile, the sagittal ramus angle (SRA), medial joint space, lateral joint space, superior joint space, anterior joint space, and posterior joint space in the patients were significantly lower than those in the asymptomatic subjects (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS ADDwR will increase the condylar angles to be significantly greater than the normal level and decrease SRA and articular spaces to be significantly smaller than the normal level. The condyles will be displaced upward, closer to the fossa.
