Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this review was to compare types of Western massage therapy (MT) to other therapies, placebo, and no-treatment controls in neck pain (NP) in randomized and nonrandomized clinical trials. METHODS An electronic, systematic search was performed in 7 English and 2 Turkish databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, SPORTDiscus, Physiotherapy Evidence-Based Database, ULAKBIM National Medical Database, and the Reference Directory of Turkey). The search terms "NP" and "massage" were used. Studies published between January 2012 and July 2021 were searched. Methodological quality was evaluated with Downs and Black Scale and version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. RESULTS A total of 932 articles were identified; 8 of them were eligible. The Downs and Black score ranged from 15 to 26 points. Two studies were rated as "fair," 3 studies as "good," and 3 studies as "excellent." According to version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool, 3 studies had a low risk of bias, 3 studies had some concerns, and 2 studies had a high risk of bias. Fair evidence found that myofascial release therapy improved pain intensity and pain threshold compared to no intervention in the short term. Excellent evidence found that connective tissue massage with exercise improved pain intensity and pain threshold compared to exercise alone in the short term. No Western MTs were superior to other active therapies according to short-term and immediate effects. CONCLUSION This review suggests that Western MTs (myofascial release therapy and connective tissue massage) may improve NP, but studies are limited. This review showed that Western MTs were not superior to other active therapies for improving NP. The reviewed studies reported only immediate and short-term effects of Western MT; thus, high-quality randomized clinical trials investigating the long-term effects of Western MT are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Neurogenic bladder (NGB) is a serious complication after spinal cord injury (SCI), a destructive neurological disease. This study focused on exploring the efficacy of the magnetic stimulation of sacral nerve roots combined with Tui-na in treating NGB after SCI. METHODS One hundred patients with NGB after SCI were studied, and intermittent clean catheterization was performed with a water intake program, and patients were grouped into four groups by the random number table method: general treatment group, Tui-na group, magnetic stimulation group, and combined treatment group. A series of relevant factors (voiding diary, urodynamics, and quality of life scores) and clinical efficacy of patients in the four groups before and after treatment were observed. RESULTS The magnetic stimulation of sacral nerve roots alone, Tui-na alone, and the combination of both were all effective in improving bladder function and quality of life in patients with NGB after SCI, including improvements in voiding frequency, single urine output, maximum urine output, residual urine output, bladder volume and quality of life scores in patients with NGB after SCI. The efficacy of the magnetic stimulation of sacral nerve roots combined with Tui-na was better than that of the magnetic stimulation of sacral nerve roots alone and the Tui-na alone. CONCLUSION This research demonstrates that the magnetic stimulation of sacral nerve roots combined with Tui-na treatment could effectively improve the urinary system and the quality of life of patients with NGB after SCI, which is worthy of clinical promotion and application.

Abstract
Background Peripheral neuropathy (PN), including numbness, loss of sensation, paresthesia, a burning sensation, and stabbing pain in extremities, is a common complication in people with human immunodeficiency virus (PHIV). Medications commonly used to treat HIV-related PN are not effective and lead to many side effects. HIV-related PN symptoms may be alleviated or treated with a series of therapeutic Chinese foot massages (TCFM), which are non-invasive and relatively safe. However, relevant studies are lacking. Study design This proposed trial is a prospective, two-arm, parallel, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial. Aim This proposed trial aims to assess the effectiveness of TCFM on HIV-related PN in people with HIV (PHIV). Outcomes The primary outcomes, measured at baseline, end of TCFM/placebo, and twelve weeks after, include (1), lower extremity pain, (2) lower extremity functioning, and (3) health-related quality of life. The secondary outcomes, measured throughout the trial process, include (1) recruitment and completion rate (No. of referred, No. of eligible, No. of enrolled, No. of withdrawals, trial recruitment rate, and trial completion rate), (2) participants' safety (No. and severity of adverse events), (3) treatment adherence (average time of each message session, No. of completed sessions, and No. of missed sessions), and (4) compliance (No. of participants completing the trial following the initial group assignment). Sample size An estimated 142 participants in total, or 71 participants in each arm, will be needed for this trial. Trial status This trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov of the National Institute of Health on Oct 26, 2022 (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05596123). The researchers expect to recruit participants starting in Feb. 2023 and ending in Feb 2025.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the influence of the effect of the smart Chinese massage appliance on the participants' sports performance and physical and mental health after intermittent exercises. The study was performed by a mixed-study method. First, the experimental research method was used to design an experimental procedure and specifications such as data collection scope. Next, the quantitative research was carried out, using SPSS 26.0 statistical software to analyze data from the questionnaire. Then, the qualitative research was carried out by interviewing experts and respondents and obtaining their opinions. Finally, all the data were collated and analyzed using the multidimensional review method. Findings. Chinese massage significantly improved the physical fitness, exercise performance, body composition, and physical and mental health status of high-strength cyclic exercise participants. High-strength exercises can improve the physical and mental health of men. Medium-strength exercises could improve current conditions for women. Oxygen intake remained peaked for 8 sessions for men and increased after 30 sessions for women. Both groups required a 1-2-week adaptation period but had different exercise performance periods. After the experiment, head and back pain, as well as stress and negative emotions, was improved. The high intensity of the exercises relieved fear, headache or head stress, overeating, and other problems.

Abstract
The purpose of the research is to analyze the improvement in the physical and mental health of college students after intermittent exercises are performed by massage. The present study employed a mixed research method. An experimental study was conducted to analyze the current status of the volunteers’ sports performance and body composition, and then a questionnaire was designed for the subjects’ physical and mental health. The data were then analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software for statistical analysis such as t-test and ANOVA. The subjects were then interviewed to collect their opinions on the study results, and finally, the results were explored by multivariate analysis. The study found that intermittent exercise can help university students develop physical fitness and performance, improve body composition, and regulate physical and mental health. The combination of intermittent exercise with sports massages further enhanced the performance of sit-ups and standing long jump, improve blood pressure, BMI, and self-confidence, as well as reducing suicidal tendencies (experimental group > control group). However, intermittent exercise participants still experienced fatigue, headache, emotional loss, and fear of depression, and the addition of sports massage did not significantly improve flexibility and cardiorespiratory endurance (control group > experimental group).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was designed to study the effects of massage and acupuncture on patients with frozen shoulder complicated with cervical spondylosis through range of motion (ROM) and daily living ability. METHODS A total of 164 patients with frozen shoulder treated in our hospital from June 2016 to April 2019 were recruited and divided into a control group and an observation group. There were 100 cases in the observation group, all of whom were treated with massage combined with acupuncture. Another 64 cases were enrolled in the control group, all of whom were treated with acupuncture alone. The recovery of myodynamia, rating scale of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), score of American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA), ROM score, vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), complication rate, total effective rate, and patient satisfaction were assessed. RESULTS After treatment, patients in the observation group had better recovery of myodynamia than the control group. They also had lower VAS scores, higher life function score and total ASES scores, higher ASIA scores, higher ROM scores, lower VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 expression, lower complication rate, higher total effective rate, and higher patient satisfaction. CONCLUSION Massage combined with acupuncture can better improve the ROM of joints and daily living ability of patients with frozen shoulder complicated with cervical spondylosis.

Abstract
Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) is the most commonly encountered cervical spine disorder. Cervical manipulation has been demonstrated as an effective therapy for patients. However, the mechanisms of manipulations have not been elucidated. A total of 120 cervical spondylotic radiculopathy patients were divided into the “three-dimensional balanced manipulation” treatment group (TBM group) and control group randomly. The control group was treated with traditional massage; the TBM treatment group was treated with “three-dimensional balanced manipulation” based on traditional massage. The symptoms and clinical efficacy of the patients were compared before and after treatment for one month. A three-dimensional finite element model was established. The mechanical parameters were imported to simulate TBM, and finite element analysis was performed. The results showed that the total effective rate was significantly higher in the TBM group compared with the control group. The biomechanical analysis showed the vertebral body stress was mainly distributed in the C3/4 spinous processes; the deformation mainly concentrated in the anterior processes of the C3 vertebral body. The intervertebral disc stress in the C3~C7 segment was mainly distributed in the anterior part of the C3/4 intervertebral disc, and the deformation extends to the posterior part of the C3/4 nucleus pulposus. In summary, these data are suggesting that TBM was effective in CSR treatment. The results of the finite element model and biomechanical analysis provide an important foundation for effectively avoiding iatrogenic injuries and improving the effect of TBM in the treatment of CSR patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As one of the important manifestations of neurogenic bowel dysfunction, constipation is characterized by high incidence and harmful effects. It has a negative impact on both physical and psychological health of patients. And there are no effective treatment options for this type of disease clinically. Therefore, this study is designed to examine the effect of the therapy of "combination 3 methods progression" in patients with neurogenic bowel dysfunction (constipated type). METHODS This is a randomized, controlled, parallel-design clinical trial. A total of 60 patients with neurogenic bowel dysfunction (constipated type) will be randomly assigned to intervention group and control group. The control group will receive 4 weeks of usual rehabilitation care, the intervention group will receive 4 weeks of the therapy of "combination 3 methods progression" in addition to usual rehabilitation care. The primary outcome is the number of spontaneous bowel movement per week. Secondary outcomes are stool characteristics, degree of difficulty in defecation, level of anxiety, level of depression, and level of self-efficacy. DISCUSSION The interventions of this protocol have been programmed to alleviate constipation in patients with neurogenic bowel dysfunction. Findings may provide preliminary evidence for clinical efficacy of the therapy of "combination 3 methods progression." TRIAL REGISTRATION Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, IDF: ChiCTR2000041463. Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) is a clinical syndrome of radial neck and shoulder pain. Both Massage and Acupotomy have been widely used in the treatment of CSR, in China and achieved satisfied efficacy. Therefore, the aim of this study is to systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupotomy combined with massage in the treatment of CSR. METHODS The following electronic databases will be searched: PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), the Cochrane Library, Embase, SinoMed, Clinical Trials. gov, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database, and VIP database. Two review authors independently search databases from their respective inception dates to September 2019 to identify potentially eligible studies. Cochrane Handbook 5.1 risk of bias assessment tool will be used to evaluate the methodological quality of the included studies. The Review Manager 5.3 will be used for all statistical analysis of the final included study. RESULTS The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis will provide a synthesis of existing evidences for the treatment of acupotomy combined with massage on CSR, especially in improving visual analog scale and symptom score. CONCLUSION This study will summarize the current evidence of acupotomy combined with massage for the treatment of CSR. This study can further guide the promotion and clinical decisions. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval and patient consent are not required because this study is a literature-based study. This systematic review and meta-analysis will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42020171825.

Abstract
To study the effects of Tui Na therapy on patients with mammary gland hyperplasia.A total of 68 female patients with mammary gland hyperplasia were included in this retrospective study from May 2016 to May 2017 and assigned into control group (N = 34) treated with Rupixiao only (a proprietary Chinese medicine) or Tui Na group (N = 34) treated with Tui Na (Chinese massage) combined with Rupixiao. The pain intensity (visual analogous scale, VAS) and serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol (E2), prolactin (PRL), and progesterone (P) were examined before and after the treatment.The efficacies were 94.1% (32/34) in the Tui Na group and 76.5% (26/34) in the control group (P = .04). After treatment, VAS in Tui Na groups was significantly lower than that in control group (2.1 ± 1.1 vs 3.1 ± 1.1, P < .05). After follow-up for five months, the recurrence rates were 12.5% (4/32) in the Tui Na group and 23.1% (6/26) in the control group (P = .01). The levels of all 4 hormones in the Tui Na group increased significantly after treatment. In control group, only LH and E2 levels were significantly increased after treatment.In patients with mammary gland hyperplasia, Tui Na combined with Rupixiao could improve clinical symptoms, regulate sex hormone levels, and decrease the recurrence rate than Rupixiao alone. Our finding suggests that Tui Na can be potentially used for the treatment of mammary gland hyperplasia.

Abstract
Objective
Pain and opioid use are highly prevalent, leading for calls to include nonpharmacological options in pain management, including complementary and integrative health (CIH) therapies. More than 2,000 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and many systematic reviews have been conducted on CIH therapies, making it difficult to easily understand what type of CIH therapy might be effective for what type of pain. Here we synthesize the strength of the evidence for four types of CIH therapies on pain: acupuncture, therapeutic massage, mindfulness techniques, and tai chi.
Design
We conducted searches of English-language systematic reviews and RCTs in 11 electronic databases and previously published reviews for each type of CIH. To synthesize that large body of literature, we then created an “evidence map,” or a visual display, of the literature size and broad estimates of effectiveness for pain.
Results
Many systematic reviews met our inclusion criteria: acupuncture (86), massage (38), mindfulness techniques (11), and tai chi (21). The evidence for acupuncture was strongest, and largest for headache and chronic pain. Mindfulness, massage, and tai chi have statistically significant positive effects on some types of pain. However, firm conclusions cannot be drawn for many types of pain due to methodological limitations or lack of RCTs.
Conclusions
There is sufficient strength of evidence for acupuncture for various types of pain. Individual studies indicate that tai chi, mindfulness, and massage may be promising for multiple types of chronic pain. Additional sufficiently powered RCTs are warranted to indicate tai chi, mindfulness, and massage for other types of pain.

Abstract
Objectives: Massage therapy has been proposed for painful conditions, but it can be difficult to understand the breadth and depth of evidence, as various painful conditions may respond differently to massage. The authors conducted an evidence mapping process and generated an "evidence map" to visually depict the distribution of evidence available for massage and various pain indications to identify gaps in evidence and to inform future research priorities. Design: The authors searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane for systematic reviews reporting pain outcomes for massage therapy. The authors assessed the quality of each review using the Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) criteria. The authors used a bubble plot to depict the number of included articles, pain indication, effect of massage for pain, and strength of findings for each included systematic review. Results: The authors identified 49 systematic reviews, of which 32 were considered high quality. Types of pain frequently included in systematic reviews were cancer pain, low back pain, and neck pain. High quality reviews concluded that there was low strength of evidence of potential benefits of massage for labor, shoulder, neck, low back, cancer, arthritis, postoperative, delayed onset muscle soreness, and musculoskeletal pain. Reported attributes of massage interventions include style of massage, provider, co-interventions, duration, and comparators, with 14 high-quality reviews reporting all these attributes in their review. Conclusion: Prior reviews have conclusions of low strength of evidence because few primary studies of large samples with rigorous methods had been conducted, leaving evidence gaps about specific massage type for specific pain. Primary studies often do not provide adequate details of massage therapy provided, limiting the extent to which reviews are able to draw conclusions about characteristics such as provider type.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the literature and systematically evaluate the effectiveness of Chuna (or Tuina) manual therapy (C[T]MT) on pain and function for musculoskeletal disorders. METHODS We searched 15 English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean databases using relevant keywords. All randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of C(T)MT for musculoskeletal disorders were considered, and we limited analyses to studies with a low-risk bias for randomization and/or allocation concealment. RESULTS Sixty-six RCTs with 6,170 participants were included. One sham-controlled RCT showed that C(T)MT relieved pain more effectively than a sham control (SMD -3.09 [-3.59, -2.59]). For active-controlled RCTs, pooled meta-analysis showed that C(T)MT had statistically significant effects on pain reduction, especially compared to traction (P < 0.00001), drugs (P = 0.04), and physical therapies (P < 0.0001). For functional improvement, combined effects of C(T)MT with drugs (P = 0.04) and traction (P = 0.05) also showed similar positive effects. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review suggests that C(T)MT is safe and effective for pain reduction and functional improvement for musculoskeletal diseases; however, the evidence for functional improvement was not as strong as for pain reduction. For future studies, high-quality RCTs such as sham-controlled studies with standardized interventions are needed to provide sufficient evidence on the effects of C(T)MT for musculoskeletal diseases.
