Bladder duplication in the male cat: the first case report in China

BACKGROUND

Bladder duplication is a rare congenital lower urinary tract anomaly disease characterized by the presence of two bladders, possibly with duplication of the urethra. This disease is rarely reported in cats. The clinical symptoms are commonly occult, with increased difficulty in making a definitive diagnosis, especially if there is no obvious urethral duplication. The diagnosis is typically based on radiographs and ultrasound, with computer tomography serving as a more advanced imaging diagnostic modality. Cases of duplicated bladders with accessory tubular tissues are even scarcer in both human and veterinary medicine.

CASE PRESENTATION

A 6-year-old male neutered cat was brought to the hospital because of vomiting and constipation. Cystography revealed increased soft tissue density of a fusiform structure in the lower middle abdomen. The purulent-filled cavitary structure and the accessory tubular structure were removed via surgery, and histopathological examination confirmed a double bladder with attached accessory tubular tissue. After antibiotic treatment, the cat recovered uneventfully.

CONCLUSION

This is the first case of bladder duplication in China and the first case of feline bladder duplication with tubular structure attachment in the world. This information will provide a reference for the diagnosis and treatment of similar cases in the future.

True uterus didelphys in she-camel: a case report and review of literature

Background

Uterus didelphys is a rare congenital anomaly of the female reproductive tract characterized by a divided uterine cervix and body. It occurs due to abnormal development of the paramesonephric (Müllerian) duct. Different forms of uterus didelphys have been reported in several animal species, including bovine, equine, ewe, goat, swine, and bitch. However, there is no previous report that has documented a completely divided female genital tract in she-camel. Moreover, there is a lack of literature regarding this anomaly in animals. Therefore, the present study reports, for the first time, a rare case of a completely divided female genital tract in a she-camel. In addition, the existing relevant literature on uterus didelphys in different animal species is reviewed.

Case presentation

A female reproductive tract of she-camel, approximately 10 years old, with a history of previous successful pregnancy, was brought to the anatomy department following the slaughtering of the animal. Initial examination revealed a normal reproductive tract consisting of two ovaries, two fallopian tubes, a uterus, and a vagina. A closer examination revealed a completely divided vagina, with an external os opened into each part of the vagina, as well as a divided uterine body and cervix. Intrauterine infusion of saline through one external os confirmed complete separation of uterine body and cervix.

Conclusion

To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of a completely divided female genital tract in a she-camel. This review summarizes the previous reports about uterus didelphys in farm animals.

[Recurrent vaginitis and cystitis due to a vagina and cervix duplex in a bitch - a case report]

Incomplete merging of the Müllerian ducts may result in vaginal septa or even completely separate vaginal canals. It may also cause cervical malformation. In most cases, there are only rudimentary vaginal septations. Only a few reports describing completely separated vaginal canals (vagina duplex) and a cervix duplex in dogs have been published. This article reports the case of a bitch presented with recurrent vaginitis and cystitis. The symptoms always appeared following the dog's heat. The bitch had been pre-treated by a prior veterinarian as well as in a prior clinic. When presented in the clinic, a vaginal septum was suspected based on digital vaginal examination. Ultrasonographic examination and urinalysis allowed for the diagnosis of bacterial cystitis, which was subsequently treated with antibiotics. The bitch was presented again for vaginal endoscopy, transection of the vaginal septum, and ovariohysterectomy. Both vagina duplex and cervix duplex were diagnosed. Due to the extensive dimensions of the findings, the altered tissue was not resected. No more bacteria were detected in a repeated urine analysis. After spaying, the bitch showed no recurrence of symptoms of cystitis or vaginitis.

A rare case of a double vagina in a young American Staffordshire Terrier bitch (Canis lupus familiaris). A case report

The presence of congenital urogenital malformations is relatively common in bitches. However, cases of double vagina in the literature are scarce, and the ones reported usually accompany other urogenital defects. The vaginal anomaly was an incidental finding in the present case during a routine spay and was not accompanied by any other malformations. A detailed presentation of the diagnosis and surgical management of the double vagina is presented in the current paper. A 1-year-old nulliparous American Staffordshire Terrier bitch was presented for dysuria in the past 24 h. After inspection and palpation, a distended abdomen was noticed. Biochemistry, hematology, and urinalysis were performed. No other laboratory findings were noted besides mild hypocalcemia, hypoproteinemia, hypobilirubinemia, and increased lipase. During the ultrasonographic examination, a hypoechoic fluid accumulation was observed caudal to the urinary bladder in what seemed to be hydrocolpos. Exploratory laparotomy was recommended. Ovariohysterovaginectomy was performed, and the gross and histological findings were highly suggestive of a double vagina. The dog recovered from surgery uneventfully, and it was free of clinical signs six months after the surgery. To the extent of our knowledge, this is the first case of double vagina, without any other congenital defects, ultrasonography documented and surgically corrected, in a young bitch.
