Genome Sequence of Colistin-Resistant Bacteremic Shewanella algae Carrying the Beta-Lactamase Gene bla OXA-55

Metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) of the emerging pathogen Shewanella algae from enrichment of coastal seawater, sediment, and algae at St. John's Island, Singapore

Coastal water, sediment, and algae samples were collected from St. John's Island, Singapore, and enriched in either broth or agar. Metagenomic sequencing was carried out on DNA from these enrichments and analyzed. A total of 29 metagenome-assembled genomes had been successfully asserted to be a close representation of Shewanella algae.

Complete Genome Sequence and Methylome of the Type Strain of Shewanella algae

We report the complete genome sequence and base modification analysis of the Shewanella algae type strain CECT 5071 (= OK-1 = ATCC 51192 = DSM 9167 = IAM 14159). The genome is composed of a single chromosome of 4,924,764 bp, with a GC content of 53.10%.

Searching for putative virulence factors in the genomes of Shewanella indica and Shewanella algae

Bacterial pathogens are a major threat to both humans and animals worldwide. It is crucial to understand the mechanisms of various disease processes at the molecular level. Shewanella species are widespread in the environment and some are considered as emerging opportunistic human and marine mammal pathogens. In this study, putative virulence factors on the genome of Shewanella indica BW, a bacterium isolated from the Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni), were determined. Additionally, for comparative purposes, putative virulence factors from two other S. indica and ten S. algae strains were also determined using the Pathosystems Resource Integration Center (PATRIC) pipeline. We confirmed the presence of previously reported virulence factors and we are proposing several new candidate virulence factors. Interestingly, the putative virulence factors were very similar between the two species with the exception of microbial collagenase which was present in all S. algae genomes, but absent in all S. indica genomes.

Comparative Genomics Reveals Pathogenicity-Related Loci in Shewanella algae

Shewanella algae is an emerging marine zoonotic pathogen and accounts for considerable mortality and morbidity in compromised hosts. However, there is scarce literature related to the understanding of the genetic background of virulence determinants in S. algae. In this study, we aim to determine the occurrence of common virulence genes in S. algae using whole-genome sequence and comparative genomic analysis. Comparative genomics reveals putative-virulence genes related to bile resistance, chemotaxis, hemolysis, and motility. We detected the existence of hlyA, hlyD, and hlyIII involved in hemolysis. We also found chemotaxis gene cluster cheYZA operon and cheW gene. The results provide insights into the genetic basis underlying pathogenicity in S. algae.
