BACKGROUND

L-lysine (lysine) is an essential amino acid that plays a vital role in human nutrition. It serves as a key component in protein synthesis and fulfills critical roles in various physiological activities. For decades, lysine supplements have been extensively used to promote the growth and development of children, particularly in developing countries where cereal-based diets are everyday staples.

AIM OF THE REVIEW

This review aims to provide an overview of the overall effectiveness of lysine supplements concerning the growth of children and adolescents. Additionally, it addresses the potential precautions that should be considered when using lysine supplements in this context.

KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW

Receiving lysine oral supplements and lysine-fortified cereal diets were observed to enhance nitrogen retention and improve anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, Z-scores, body mass index, and skinfold thickness. Furthermore, lysine positively influenced the children's developmental quotient and various serological biochemical parameters, such as hormones, immunological indicators, proteins, bone metabolic indicators, and red blood cell parameters. These supplements are generally considered clinically safe, with no reported toxicity where the related side effects are limited to subjective gastrointestinal tract symptoms. It is essential to be cautious about excessive intake of lysine, as it can lead to an imbalance of amino acids, thereby potentially suppressing its intended benefits. When used with appropriate precautions, lysine can serve as a safe supplement with promising benefits for the growth of children and adolescents. Nevertheless, further contemporary research studies on lysine supplementation would be insightful and valuable in better understanding its optimal use, potential benefits, and safety in promoting growth.

Effectiveness of orange almond potato cookie vs. orange potato cookie supplementation on nutritional wellbeing of the Indonesian stunted preschool-aged children during COVID-19 pandemic

Background

Preschool-aged children who experience stunting due to insufficient consumption of macro- and micronutrients exhibit weakened immune systems, rendering them susceptible to contracting COVID-19 during the ongoing epidemic. Therefore, it is imperative to implement interventions aimed at enhancing the nutritional status of preschool-aged children by providing them with nutrient-rich food supplements as a preventive measure against illness transmission. The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of incorporating potato almond orange cookies into the diet on the nutritional status of preschool-aged children who are experiencing stunting.

Methods

A non-randomized pre-post intervention study was done on 42 individuals aged 12-58 months during 4 weeks. The intervention group was provided with almond potato cookies, while the control group was given orange potato cookies. During the study period, educational sessions on balanced nutrition in preschool-aged children with stunting and COVID-19 were provided to the mothers of both groups. The data analysis involved conducting univariate and bivariate analyses, namely utilizing the independent t-test.

Results

The intervention group exhibited the most significant enhancements in -for-Age Z-score. The mean -for-Age Z-score of the intervention group increased by 0.51 (from -3.15 to -2.64), whereas the control group saw a smaller gain of 0.25 (from -2.69 to -2.44). This increase was influenced by the mother's age; mother's education; father's occupation; family size; good sanitation facilities; healthy home environment; and fat, calcium, and zinc intake from the cookies (p < 0.05). From the perspective of knowledge about balanced nutrition and COVID-19, there was no significant difference in the -for-Age Z-score in the intervention group.

Conclusion

The ingestion of orange almond potato cookies has the potential to enhance the nutritional wellbeing of children in the preschool age group who are experiencing stunted growth.

Configuration of gut bacterial community profile and their potential functionality in the digestive tract of the wild and cultivated Indonesian shortfin elver-phase eels (Anguilla bicolor bicolor McClelland, 1844)

This study aimed to explore the bacteria present in the digestive tracts of wild and cultivated Indonesian shortfin eel during the elver phase. The eel has high export potential due to its vitamin and micronutrient content, but slow growth and vulnerability to collapse in farm conditions hinder its cultivation. The microbiota in the eel's digestive tract is crucial for its health, particularly during the elver phase. This study used Next Generation Sequencing to analyze the community structure and diversity of bacteria in the eels' digestive tracts, focusing on the V3-V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. Mothur software was used for data analysis and PAST v.3.26 was used to calculate alpha diversity. The results showed that Proteobacteria (64.18%) and Firmicutes (33.55%) were the predominant phyla in the digestive tract of cultivated eels, while Bacteroidetes (54.16%), Firmicutes (14.71%), and Fusobacteria (10.56%) were predominant in wild eels. The most prevalent genera in cultivated and wild elver were Plesiomonas and Cetobacterium, respectively. The microbiota in the digestive tract of cultivated eels was diverse despite uneven distribution. The KEGG database analysis revealed that the primary function of the microbiome was to facilitate the eel's absorption of nutrients by contributing significantly to the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids. This study's findings can aid in assessing eel health and improving eel farming conditions.

Effect of Eel Cookie Supplementation on the Hemoglobin Status of Pregnant Women with Anaemia: A Pilot Study

Background

Anaemia in pregnancy is a major global health problem. Iron and folic acid (IFAS) and animal-based supplement consumption could improve the hemoglobin status of pregnant women. This study is aimed at determining the effect of eel cookie supplementation on hemoglobin levels of pregnant women.

Methods

This pilot study with pretest–posttest design was conducted in Tamanjaya Public Health Center, Geopark Ciletuh, Sukabumi District, West Java Province, Indonesia. A total of 40 voluntary pregnant women were divided into two groups: an intervention group that received 11 pieces of eel cookies and control group that received the same number of cookies without eel. The women's hemoglobin level was analysed using t-test, Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, and analysis of covariance tests.

Results

After consuming the eel cookies for 1 month, there was a significantly greater increase in the hemoglobin levels in the intervention group than those in the control group, which were 1.69 and 0.69 g/dL, respectively. Improvement in percentage of mean hemoglobin was higher in the intervention group than in the control group, which was 17.21% and 6.53%, respectively.

Conclusions

Supplementation with eel cookies and IFAS for 1 month could improve the hemoglobin status in pregnant women with anaemia.
