Diet behavior and consumption of iron inhibitors: Incidence anemia in adolescent girls

One of the strategies to prevent adolescent girls anemia through efforts to identify the factors that cause anemia. Adolescent girls are are prospective mothers who must prepare physically, mentally, with good knowledge so that they do not experience anemia during pregnancy. The aim of the study was to analyze the risk factors for the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls in Banyumas Regency, Indonesia. Quantitative approach used to identify factors that influence anemia in adolescent girls. Research variables are menstrual period, knowledge, diet attitudes and behavior, perception of body image, role of friends in prevention of anemia, role, exposure to information, consumption of iron, consumption of inhibitors and iron enhancers. The population of this research is young women aged 12-19 years. The taking technique by simple random sampling was amount 100, Data analysis was univariate, bivariate (chi square) and multivariate (linear regression). The results showed that the prevalence of anemia was 20%. Based on the results of statistical tests, it was obtained a P-value of 0.005 (<0.05) meaning that there was an influence on adolescent dietary behavior, the role of adolescents in preventing anemia and the consumption of iron inhibitors on the incidence of anemia. Anemia in young girls. There is an influence of eating behavior in female adolescents, the role of female adolescents in preventing anemia and consumption of iron inhibitors on the occurrence of anemia in female adolescents.

Formulation and Effect of Iron Fortified Instant Bose Corn on Addressing Anemia among Adolescent Girls in Kupang, Indonesia

This study aimed to develop Fe-fortified instant Bose corn (IBC), a traditional Timorese food, as a strategy to address anemia among adolescent girls in Kupang, Indonesia. Instant corn and cowpea grits were made to shorten the preparation time with various times of soaking (IBC1=10 min; IBC2=15 min; IBC3=20 min) to select the best formula. The selected IBC was then fortified with NaFeEDTA·3H₂O and nutrient content was evaluated. In the intervention study, a pre-post controlled trial was applied to 40 anemic adolescent girls aged 16∼19 years. Subjects with severe anemia (Hb=8.5∼10.4 g/dL) received the fortified selected IBC, whereas those with moderate anemia (Hb=10.5∼11.5 g/dL) received the unfortified selected IBC. A total of 100 g IBC were provided three times/week for 2 months. The hemoglobin and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) levels were measured at baseline and endline, respectively. IBC3 produced the highest acceptance level as compared to other formulas. The fortified IBC3 met 127.4% recommended dietary allowances for iron. Moreover, both fortified and unfortified IBC3 significantly increased the hemoglobin levels of adolescent girls with the higher improvement found in the group of fortified IBC3 (1.73±1.21 g/dL; P<0.05). However, the beneficial effects of the fortified IBC3 could not be observed on sTfR levels. Since the effect on Hb levels was significant with less effect, the intervention of IBC3 for only 2 months did not adequate to improve sTfR levels. Nevertheless, this study suggests that Fe-fortified IBC may be effective in preventing anemia among adolescent girls in Kupang, Indonesia.

Iron Deficiency Anemia and Associated Factors Among Adolescent Girls and Women in a Rural Area of Jatinangor, Indonesia

Background

Iron deficiency anemia is a common problem among adolescent girls and women, with significant consequences on personal health. One of the causes of iron deficiency anemia is inadequate nutritional intake. This study explores iron-deficiency anemia and associated factors among adolescent girls and women in a rural area of Jatinangor, Indonesia.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted with 95 adolescent girls and 85 women between April and November 2018. Cluster random sampling was used to select the participants from seven villages in the Jatinangor district. After obtaining informed consent, we collected sociodemographic data, menstrual histories, and related data, including nutritional intake using 24-hour dietary recall. Anthropometrics were gathered to determine the body mass Index (BMI), and venous blood samples were analyzed for complete blood count and hemoglobin levels. Descriptive statistics followed by bivariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to identify anemia-associated factors.

Results

The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among the girls was 21.1% and 9.4% among women, with an average hemoglobin level in adolescents of 10.75 g/dL (± 0.79) and in adults 11.20 g/dL (± 0.61), whereas MCV was 74.49±8.22 fL in adolescents and 7.61±8.62 fL in adults. The majority of our samples were not stunted in growth and were also within a normal weight range. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that protein intake (OR=0.25; 95% CI 0.11–0.58) was a positively associated factor with anemia.

Conclusion

The prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia in this study represents a mild public health problem in the study sample. Based on the hemoglobin level, anemia, can be classified as moderate in adolescents and mild in adults. Low levels of MCH indicate iron-deficiency anemia. Sufficient protein intake did not prevent anemia due to macronutrient and micronutrient intake.

Activation of STAT and SMAD Signaling Induces Hepcidin Re-Expression as a Therapeutic Target for β-Thalassemia Patients

Iron homeostasis is regulated by hepcidin, a hepatic hormone that controls dietary iron absorption and plasma iron concentration. Hepcidin binds to the only known iron export protein, ferroportin (FPN), which regulates its expression. The major factors that implicate hepcidin regulation include iron stores, hypoxia, inflammation, and erythropoiesis. When erythropoietic activity is suppressed, hepcidin expression is hampered, leading to deficiency, thus causing an iron overload in iron-loading anemia, such as β-thalassemia. Iron overload is the principal cause of mortality and morbidity in β-thalassemia patients with or without blood transfusion dependence. In the case of thalassemia major, the primary cause of iron overload is blood transfusion. In contrast, iron overload is attributed to hepcidin deficiency and hyperabsorption of dietary iron in non-transfusion thalassemia. Beta-thalassemia patients showed marked hepcidin suppression, anemia, iron overload, and ineffective erythropoiesis (IE). Recent molecular research has prompted the discovery of new diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for several diseases, including β-thalassemia. In this review, signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) and SMAD (structurally similar to the small mothers against decapentaplegic in Drosophila) pathways and their effects on hepcidin expression have been discussed as a therapeutic target for β-thalassemia patients. Therefore, re-expression of hepcidin could be a therapeutic target in the management of thalassemia patients. Data from 65 relevant published experimental articles on hepcidin and β-thalassemia between January 2016 and May 2021 were retrieved by using PubMed and Google Scholar search engines. Published articles in any language other than English, review articles, books, or book chapters were excluded.
