Abstract
Several studies have proposed the existence of an association between periodontitis and chronic kidney disease (CKD) based on biological premises. There is growing evidence that chronic inflammation caused by periodontitis may contribute to the progression of CKD. The present study aimed to investigate studies that link CKD and periodontitis, including periodontitis proxies such as oral hygiene and tooth loss, and patient-related factors such as inflammatory response and genetic polymorphisms. An electronic search was conducted on the MEDLINE (Pubmed), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Scopus, and Web of Science databases using an advanced search option up until August 2024. Thirty-two studies were included: 4 interventional, 16 cohort, and 12 case-control. Overall, the prevalence of periodontitis was significantly higher in patients with CKD: the diagnosis of periodontal disease was associated with an increase in the risk of incident CKD, and parameters of periodontal disease were negatively correlated with kidney function. Inside the field of periodontal medicine, the current evidence indicates a possible association between CKD and periodontitis and supports future longitudinal studies to investigate the two-way relationship between the diseases and their pathophysiology, and possibly to establish cause and effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients undergoing haemodialysis are more susceptible to infectious diseases, including periodontitis. This study aimed to investigate the Correlation between periodontal disease and serum markers in Yemeni haemodialysis patients. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 70 haemodialysis patients. Patient interviews, clinical examinations, and laboratory tests were performed to collect data. Serum levels of albumin, calcium, phosphorus, haemoglobin, ferritin, and creatinine were measured, with separate measurements for cystatin C The association between categorical variables was assessed using the chi-square test and Pearson's correlation coefficient, considering a significance level of p < 0.05. RESULTS Significant correlations were found between serum biomarkers and periodontal clinical parameters. Phosphorus, creatinine, albumin, ferritin, and creatinine levels correlated significantly with the Plaque Index (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.015, p = 0.018, and p = 0.03). While the Ferritin level showed significant correlations with both the Plaque Index and Miller Classes (r = 0.281, p = 0.018 and r = 0.258, p = 0.031), respectively. The Calcium level showed a significant correlation with the Gingival Index (r = 0.266, p = 0.027). Cystatin C level was statistically correlated with mobility (r = 0.258, p = 0.031). Also, the result showed a significant correlation between Creatinine levels and Periodontitis (r = 0.26, p = 0.03). CONCLUSION This study provides evidence of a strong association between periodontal disease and chronic kidney disease in Yemeni haemodialysis patients. The findings emphasize the significance of maintaining good oral health in the care of haemodialysis patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the correlation between serum and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of inflammatory cytokines and the association with periodontal parameters in patients with maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) and healthy control. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients who were undergoing MHD were enrolled as the MHD group. Healthy individuals who underwent oral examination were selected as the control group after matching for the MHD group. All participants underwent a full-mouth periodontal evaluation, and the levels of eight inflammatory cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-17, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), and C-reactive protein (CRP), in the GCF and serum were measured. RESULTS A total of 63 MHD patients and 75 healthy persons were included. The prevalence of moderate/severe periodontitis was significantly higher in the MHD group than in the control group (88.9 vs. 66.7%, P < 0.05). The GCF levels of CRP, TNF-α, MCP-1, and MMP-8 were higher in patients in the MHD group with moderate/severe periodontitis than in the control group (P < 0.05). Serum CRP, MCP-1, TNF-α, and MMP-8 levels were positively correlated with the GCF CRP levels (P < 0.05). The GCF and serum CRP levels were positively correlated with the periodontal clinical parameters (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Serum CRP, MCP-1, TNF-α, and MMP-8 may relate with the GCF CRP levels. The GCF and serum CRP levels correlated positively with the periodontal clinical parameters, including the VPI, PPD, and CAL, indicating that CRP may play an important role between periodontitis and ESRD. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The present study indicated that GCF and serum CRP levels correlated positively with the periodontal clinical parameters, and the CRP levels may be selected as an indicator to evaluate the severity of inflammation and the effectiveness, prognosis of periodontal treatment in ESRD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In patients with end stage, renal disease a high rate of morbidity and mortality is present. Studies suggest that end stage renal disease may affect oral health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to perform a scoping review on periodontal disease, dental caries, xerostomia, and hyposalivation in end stage renal disease patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature search (in PubMed and Embase.com) was performed up to September 29, 2020, in collaboration with a medical information specialist. Included outcome variables were the community periodontal index, probing pocket depth, gingival index, bleeding on probing, decayed-missing-filled-teeth, carious-absent-obturated index, Xerostomia Inventory and the (un)stimulated whole salivary flow rate. RESULTS Forty three out of 1293 studies were included in the final review comprising 7757 end stage renal disease patients. The average age was 58.3 ± 29.4 years. 28.2%-78.8% of patients reported xerostomia and the (un)stimulated salivary flow rates were significantly lower. Higher community periodontal index scores were measured in end stage renal disease patients. More decayed-missing-filled-teeth were recorded, but no differences were found between groups. CONCLUSIONS Xerostomia and hyposalivation were highly prevalent in end stage renal disease patients. Patients have more deepened pockets, but an equal number of carious teeth compared to healthy controls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the growing interest in oral health and chronic disease in geriatric medicine, the evidence of an association between the two variables is limited. OBJECTIVES This study sought to examine the association between oral health status and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in this setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included consecutive post-acute patients in a rehabilitation hospital. Oral health status was evaluated using the Revised Oral Assessment Guide (ROAG). Renal function or CKD stage was assessed by measurement of the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine which subcategories of ROAG were independently associated with advanced CKD stages (vs. early CKD stages). Multiple linear regression analysis was used to clarify whether eGFR on admission was independently associated with ROAG score after adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS A total of 1056 (mean age 70 years; 52% women) were included in the analysis. Slight and moderate-to-severe oral health problems were detected in 57.7% and 15.4% of patients, respectively. Patients with oral problems had a more severe stage of CKD (P = .036) and a lower eGFR (P = .028). Among subitems of ROAG, tongue (OR = 1.40, P = .041), saliva (OR = 1.72, P = .039) and oral cavity mucosa (OR = 1.37, P = .013) status was independently associated with the presence of CKD stages 3, 4 and 5. Furthermore, eGFR was independently associated with ROAG score (β = -0.180, P = .034) after adjusting for possible confounders. CONCLUSIONS Impaired oral health status is common and closely associated with CKD in post-acute inpatients.

Abstract
Background Our previous pilot study using patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in one medical clinic showed an association of urinary albumin excretion, a marker of generalized vascular dysfunction and kidney damage, with periodontitis. The purpose of this study was to confirm the association by increasing the number of patients and medical clinics. Methods Participants were 2302 patients (59.9% males, aged 29-93 years) with type 2 diabetes mellitus from 25 medical clinics. Their medical records and information about socioeconomic status and health behavior were collected. Periodontal status was assessed in a nearby dental office. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the association of log-transformed urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio with periodontal parameters after adjusting for sociodemographic status, general health conditions, and health behaviors. The analyses were performed in all subjects and subjects with normoalbuminuria only. Results Multiple linear regression analysis showed that mean probing pocket depth (beta: 0.062), percentage of sites with probing pocket depth of 4 mm or deeper (beta: 0.068), percentage of mobile teeth (beta: 0.055), and severity of periodontitis (beta: 0.049) were significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with log-transformed urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio after adjusting for possible confounders in all subjects. However, no significant associations between urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio and periodontal parameters were observed in subjects with normoalbuminuria only. Conclusions These results suggest that periodontitis is associated with urinary albumin excretion in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Collaboration between medical and dental healthcare providers is needed for treatment of diabetes and periodontitis.

Abstract
RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE Previous studies have yielded inconclusive findings regarding the relationship between periodontitis and kidney function. We sought to investigate whether periodontitis is associated with subsequent decreases in kidney function (reductions in estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] and increased urinary albumin-creatinine ratio [UACR]) in the general population. STUDY DESIGN Population-based cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS We used baseline and 11-year follow-up data from 2,297 and 1,512 adult participants, respectively, in the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP). Age range was limited to 20 to 59 years to avoid the potential influence of tooth loss. EXPOSURES Periodontal status defined by periodontal pocket probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level. Mean levels and the percentage of sites ≥ 3mm was determined for either all sites (PPD) or interproximal sites (clinical attachment level). All PPDs≥4mm were summed to calculate the total PPD. OUTCOMES GFR estimated from serum creatinine and serum cystatin C (eGFRcr-cys). Moderately increased albuminuria defined as UACR>30mg/g. ANALYTICAL APPROACH Adjusted linear and logistic mixed regression models. RESULTS At baseline and follow-up, average eGFRcr-cys was 118.3 and 105.0mL/min/1.73m2, respectively. Using mixed models, no consistently significant associations between periodontitis variables and eGFRcr-cys were detected. Long-term changes in UACR were inconsistently associated with periodontitis measures. After imputation of missing data, associations were either attenuated or no longer detectable. LIMITATIONS Because periodontal assessments were performed using a partial recording protocol, periodontal disease severity estimates might have been underestimated, resulting in attenuated effect estimates. CONCLUSIONS We found no consistent evidence for an association between periodontitis and decreased kidney function. In contrast to previous studies, these results do not support the hypothesis that periodontitis is an important risk factor for chronic kidney disease.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between the number of natural teeth and measures of kidney dysfunction, such as urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) and estimated glomerular filtration (eGFR) rate, using nationally representative data.The data used were from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with cross-sectional design, which was conducted between 2011 and 2012; the sample analyzed in this study consisted of a total of 10,388 respondents, each of whom was 19 years or older and had no missing outcome variables. The association between the number of natural teeth and kidney function was assessed by multiple logistic regression and model was adjusted for age, sex, waist conference, smoking, drinking, exercise, education, income, frequency of tooth brushing per day, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, urinary ACR, and eGFR.The mean age, body mass index, and waist circumference were significantly higher among those with lower kidney function (urinary ACR ≥30 mg/g and eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73m). Urinary ACR and eGFR were associated with loss of natural teeth. As urinary ACR increased, the number of natural teeth decreased accordingly. Conversely, the number of natural teeth increased with an increase in eGFR.This study showed that the number of natural teeth is inversely associated with the presence of kidney disease. Severity of tooth loss may be considered an independent risk indicator for kidney disease among Koreans. More epidemiological studies are warranted to investigate the role of tooth loss in kidney disease, to confirm this relationship and to test possible underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the most common metabolic disease of domesticated cats, with most affected cats being geriatric (>12 years of age). The prevalence of CKD in cats exceeds that observed in dogs, and the frequency of the diagnosis of CKD in cats has increased in recent decades. Typical histologic features include interstitial inflammation, tubular atrophy, and fibrosis with secondary glomerulosclerosis. In contrast to people and dogs, primary glomerulopathies with marked proteinuria are remarkably rare findings in cats. Although a variety of primary renal diseases have been implicated, the disease is idiopathic in most cats. Tubulointerstitial changes, including fibrosis, are present in the early stages of feline CKD and become more severe in advanced disease. A variety of factors-including aging, ischemia, comorbid conditions, phosphorus overload, and routine vaccinations-have been implicated as factors that could contribute to the initiation of this disease in affected cats. Factors that are related to progression of established CKD, which occurs in some but not all cats, include dietary phosphorus intake, magnitude of proteinuria, and anemia. Renal fibrosis, a common histologic feature of aged feline kidneys, interferes with the normal relationship between peritubular capillaries and renal tubules. Experimentally, renal ischemia results in morphologic changes similar to those observed in spontaneous CKD. Renal hypoxia, perhaps episodic, may play a role in the initiation and progression of this disease.

Abstract
Albuminuria and periodontitis are both commonly associated with systemic inflammation. However, the association between urinary albumin excretion (UAE) and periodontitis in patients with type 2 diabetes has not been fully investigated. This study aimed to investigate the association between UAE and periodontitis in Korean adults with type 2 diabetes.This study performed a cross-sectional analysis and used hierarchical multivariable logistic regression analysis models. Data from the 2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. A total of 547 patients, with type 2 diabetes without renal impairment, were included in this study. UAE was assessed using the urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR). A community periodontal index greater than or equal to code 3 was used to define periodontitis.The risk of periodontitis tended to increase as UACR increased even after adjustment for potential confounders (P for trend in the odds ratios = 0.05 in model 1; 0.02 in model 2; and 0.01 in model 3). In a subgroup analysis, the prevalence of periodontitis was significantly higher in the patients with albuminuria (UACR >30 mg/g) than in those without albuminuria among patients younger than 65 years (P = 0.03), those with newly diagnosed diabetes (P = 0.04), or those without obesity (P = .04).UAE was positively associated with the risk of periodontitis in Korean adults with type 2 diabetes. In the patients who were younger, were newly diagnosed with diabetes, or had normal body mass index, individuals with albuminuria were more likely to have a higher prevalence of periodontitis. Early identification of periodontitis may be helpful in Korean diabetic adults with increased UAE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Precision medicine (PM), representing clinically applicable personalized medicine, proactively integrates and interprets multidimensional personal health data, including clinical, 'omics', and environmental profiles, into clinical practice. Realization of PM remains in progress. OBJECTIVE The focus of this review is to provide a descriptive narrative overview of: 1) the current status of oral personalized medicine; and 2) recent advances in genomics and related 'omic' and emerging research domains contributing to advancing oral-systemic PM, with special emphasis on current understanding of oral microbiomes. DESIGN A scan of peer-reviewed literature describing oral PM or 'omic'-based research conducted on humans/data published in English within the last 5 years in journals indexed in the PubMed database was conducted using mesh search terms. An evidence-based approach was used to report on recent advances with potential to advance PM in the context of historical critical and systematic reviews to delineate current state-of-the-art technologies. Special focus was placed on oral microbiome research associated with health and disease states, emerging research domains, and technological advances, which are positioning realization of PM. RESULTS This review summarizes: 1) evolving conceptualization of personalized medicine; 2) emerging insight into roles of oral infectious and inflammatory processes as contributors to both oral and systemic diseases; 3) community shifts in microbiota that may contribute to disease; 4) evidence pointing to new uncharacterized potential oral pathogens; 5) advances in technological approaches to 'omics' research that will accelerate PM; 6) emerging research domains that expand insights into host-microbe interaction including inter-kingdom communication, systems and network analysis, and salivaomics; and 7) advances in informatics and big data analysis capabilities to facilitate interpretation of host and microbiome-associated datasets. Furthermore, progress in clinically applicable screening assays and biomarker definition to inform clinical care are briefly explored. CONCLUSION Advancement of oral PM currently remains in research and discovery phases. Although substantive progress has been made in advancing the understanding of the role of microbiome dynamics in health and disease and is being leveraged to advance early efforts at clinical translation, further research is required to discern interpretable constituency patterns in the complex interactions of these microbial communities in health and disease. Advances in biotechnology and bioinformatics facilitating novel approaches to rapid analysis and interpretation of large datasets are providing new insights into oral health and disease, potentiating clinical application and advancing realization of PM within the next decade.
