Abstract
Background: Omentin (omentin-1, intelectin-1, ITLN-1) is an adipokine considered to be a novel substance. Many chronic, inflammatory, or civilization diseases are linked to obesity, in which omentin plays a significant role. Methods: MEDLINE and SCOPUS databases were searched using the keywords "omentin" or "intelectin-1". Then the most recent articles providing new perspectives on the matter and the most important studies, which revealed crucial insight, were selected to summarize the current knowledge on the role of omentin in a literature review. Results and Conclusions: The valid role of this adipokine is evident in the course of metabolic syndrome. In most cases, elevated omentin expression is correlated with the better course of diseases, including: type 2 diabetes mellitus, polycystic ovary syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, atherosclerosis, or ischemic stroke, for some of which it can be a better marker than the currently used ones. However, results of omentin studies are not completely one-sided. It was proven to participate in the development of asthma and atopic dermatitis and to have different concentration dynamics in various types of tumors. All of omentin's effects and properties make it an attractive subject of research, considering still unexplored inflammation mechanisms, in which it may play an important role. Omentin was proven to prevent osteoarthritis, hepatocirrhosis, and atherosclerosis in mouse models. All of the above places omentin among potential therapeutic products, and not only as a biomarker. However, the main problems with the omentin's research state are the lack of standardization, which causes many contradictions and disagreements in this field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome is a prevalent and common health problem and numerous studies have revealed the role of diet and lifestyle change in prevention of metabolic syndrome. However, the novel dietary index, cardioprotective index (CPI) and its association with metabolic syndrome is not investigated yet. In the current study, we evaluated the association between metabolic syndrome and its components, CPI, Nesfatin-1 and Omentin-1in a cross-sectional study. METHODS Three hundred forty eight overweight and obese individuals with metabolic syndrome were recruited. Subjects underwent anthropometric and laboratory assays including metabolic markers, Nesfatin-1 and Omentin-1 with commercial kits. RESULTS Those at the first tertile of CPI had lower high density lipoprotein concentrations (HDL) and higher low density lipoprotein concentrations (LDL), triglyceride (TG), systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP, DBP) levels compared with those at the highest tertiles (P < 0.05). After adjustment for the confounding effects of age, sex, body mass index, physical activity and total calorie intake, LDL lost its significance across CPI tertiles. Moreover, serum total cholesterol, insulin and insulin resistance were not significant across CPI tertiles neither in crude nor in adjusted models (P > 0.05). Additionally, being at the third tertile of CPI was accompanied with significantly higher Nesfatin-1 and Omentin-1 levels compared with lowest tertiels (P < 0.05) in crude and confounder - adjusted models. CONCLUSIONS To our findings, CPI was in positive relationship with metabolic parameters, blood pressure, Nesfatin-1 and Omentin-1 levels in metabolic syndrome. Further future studies will help to elaborate the causality. CLINICAL TRIAL NUMBER Not applicable.

Abstract
Although the morphological features and functions of adipose tissue are well-described in obesity-prone animal models, less information is available on animals such as the stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive (SHRSP) strain with cardiovascular abnormalities, which is not characterized by excessive adiposity. Our aim was to focus on lifestyle-induced (type of diet and physical exercise) effects on adipokine profile and lipid peroxidation in SHRSP rats. In our study, male Wistar-kyoto (control) and SHRSP rats were used. SHRSP rats were fed either standard chow or a high-fat diet with 40% fat content (HFD). One group of the animals was placed into cages fitted with a running-wheel; thus, the dietary and training period started at the same time and lasted for 12 weeks. At the end of the experimental period, adiponectin, leptin, omentin, and chemerin concentrations were determined from adipose tissue and serum. Besides adipokines, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were also measured. Twelve weeks of HFD significantly decreased adiponectin and omentin concentrations of both adipose tissue and serum, which were ameliorated by physical exercise. Serum leptin, chemerin, and MDA values were elevated in HFD groups; however, physical exercise was able to mitigate these adverse changes. Our results underpin the crosstalk between lifestyle changes and dysfunctional adipose tissue in SHRSP rats.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction: The literature on the health aspects of Ramadan fasting (RF) is widely spread in many journals.
Materials and Methods: This is a narrative review of data obtained from the PubMed database (National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland, United States). We used the search term “Ramadan fasting,” and relevant records were examined. The publications are narrated thematically.
Results: The publications spanned fundamental, clinical, professional, cultural, and advocacy facets. The publications crossed conventional disciplinary lines and geographical locations and appeared in journals with different access systems. The contents are presented under the themes that emerged depending on the retrieved literature. This year basic coverage included changes in physiology and nutrition during Ramadan. However, the clinical issues included a wide range of topics. These included the impact of RF on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and adjustments needed in endocrine replacement therapy for hypothyroidism and adrenal insufficiency. Coverage also included chronic kidney disease. The impact on maternal health, fetal well-being, and long-term effects of RF exposures were addressed in several studies. Studies in cardiovascular medicine focused on blood pressure and cardiovascular risk factors. Sports medicine and athletes' well-being received somewhat prominent coverage. The impact on renal function, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease, was investigated by a few authors. Several groups addressed the eyes' structure and function, neurological conditions, especially headache disorders, and hematological and oncological conditions. Finally, the impact of RF on several aspects of mental health and well-being was addressed by various groups.
Conclusions: Health aspects of RF received a sustained academic interest with a broad spectrum in 2021. This narration provides an overview of the year's scholarly health-related literature on various aspects of health and disease. It should help researchers and clinicians catch up quickly with the health concerns during Ramadan.
