Exploring the Phenotype and Possible Mechanisms of Palinopsia in Visual Snow Syndrome

Purpose

Palinopsia (persistent afterimages and/or trailing) is a common but poorly understood symptom of the neurological condition visual snow syndrome. This study aimed to collect a phenotypical description of palinopsia in visual snow syndrome and probe for abnormalities in temporal visual processing, hypothesizing that palinopsia could arise from increased visibility of normal afterimage signals or prolonged visible persistence.

Methods

Thirty controls and 31 participants with visual snow syndrome (18 with migraine) took part. Participants completed a palinopsia symptom questionnaire. Contrast detection thresholds were measured before and after brief exposure to a spatial grating because deficient contrast adaptation could increase afterimage visibility. Temporal integration and segregation were assessed using missing-element and odd-element tasks, respectively, because prolonged persistence would promote integration at wide temporal offsets. To distinguish the effects of visual snow syndrome from comorbid migraine, 25 people with migraine alone participated in an additional experiment.

Results

Palinopsia was common in visual snow syndrome, typically presenting as unformed images that were frequently noticed. Contrary to our hypotheses, we found neither reduced contrast adaptation (F(3.22, 190.21) = 0.71, P = 0.56) nor significantly prolonged temporal integration thresholds (F(1, 59) = 2.35, P = 0.13) in visual snow syndrome. Instead, participants with visual snow syndrome could segregate stimuli in closer succession than controls (F(1, 59) = 4.62, P = 0.04, ηp2 = 0.073) regardless of co-occurring migraine (F(2, 53) = 1.22, P = 0.30). In contrast, individuals with migraine alone exhibited impaired integration (F(2, 53) = 4.44, P = 0.017, ηp2 = 0.14).

Conclusions

Although neither deficient contrast adaptation nor prolonged visible persistence explains palinopsia, temporal resolution of spatial cues is enhanced and potentially more flexible in visual snow syndrome.

Multi-timescale neural dynamics for multisensory integration

Carrying out any everyday task, be it driving in traffic, conversing with friends or playing basketball, requires rapid selection, integration and segregation of stimuli from different sensory modalities. At present, even the most advanced artificial intelligence-based systems are unable to replicate the multisensory processes that the human brain routinely performs, but how neural circuits in the brain carry out these processes is still not well understood. In this Perspective, we discuss recent findings that shed fresh light on the oscillatory neural mechanisms that mediate multisensory integration (MI), including power modulations, phase resetting, phase-amplitude coupling and dynamic functional connectivity. We then consider studies that also suggest multi-timescale dynamics in intrinsic ongoing neural activity and during stimulus-driven bottom-up and cognitive top-down neural network processing in the context of MI. We propose a new concept of MI that emphasizes the critical role of neural dynamics at multiple timescales within and across brain networks, enabling the simultaneous integration, segregation, hierarchical structuring and selection of information in different time windows. To highlight predictions from our multi-timescale concept of MI, real-world scenarios in which multi-timescale processes may coordinate MI in a flexible and adaptive manner are considered.

The Influence of Alpha Frequency on Temporal Binding across the Senses: Response to the Special Focus

The papers collected in this Special Focus, prompted by S. Buergers and U. Noppeney [The role of alpha oscillations in temporal binding within and across the senses. Nature Human Behaviour, 6, 732-742, 2022], have raised several interesting ideas, arguments, and empirical results relating to the alpha temporal resolution hypothesis. Here we briefly respond to these, and in the process emphasize four challenges for future research: defining the scope and limitation of the hypothesis; developing experimental paradigms and study designs that rigorously test its tenets; decomposing the scalp-level signal and isolating underlying neural circuits; and bringing uniformity to the current diversity of analysis and statistical methods. Addressing these challenges will facilitate the progression from merely correlating alpha frequency with various perceptual phenomena to establishing whether and (if so) how alpha frequency influences sensory integration and segregation.

Alpha-band Brain Dynamics and Temporal Processing: An Introduction to the Special Focus

For decades, the intriguing connection between the human alpha rhythm (an 8- to 13-Hz oscillation maximal over posterior cortex) and temporal processes in perception has furnished a rich landscape of proposals. The past decade, however, has seen a surge in interest in the topic, bringing new theoretical, analytic, and methodological developments alongside fresh controversies. This Special Focus on alpha-band dynamics and temporal processing provides an up-to-date snapshot of the playing field, with contributions from leading researchers in the field spanning original perspectives, new evidence, comprehensive reviews and meta-analyses, as well as discussion of ongoing controversies and paths forward. We hope that the perspectives captured here will help catalyze future research and shape the pathways toward a theoretically grounded and mechanistic account of the link between alpha dynamics and temporal properties of perception.
