Tuning the characteristics of electrochemically fabricated gold nanowires

Increasing the structural and compositional diversity of ion-track templated 1D nanostructures through multistep etching, plastic deformation, and deposition

Ion-track etching represents a highly versatile way of introducing artificial pores with diameters down into the nm-regime into polymers, which offers considerable synthetic flexibility in template-assisted nanofabrication schemes. While the mechanistic foundations of ion-track technology are well understood, its potential for creating structurally and compositionally complex nano-architectures is far from being fully tapped. In this study, we showcase different strategies to expand the synthetic repertoire of ion-track membrane templating by creating several new 1D nanostructures, namely metal nanotubes of elliptical cross-section, funnel-shaped nanotubes optionally overcoated with titania or nickel nanospike layers, and concentrical as well as stacked metal nanotube-nanowire heterostructures. These nano-architectures are obtained solely by applying different wet-chemical deposition methods (electroless plating, electrodeposition, and chemical bath deposition) to ion-track etched polycarbonate templates, whose pore geometry is modified through plastic deformation, consecutive etching steps under differing conditions, and etching steps intermitted by spatially confined deposition, providing new motifs for nanoscale replication.

Dual antifungal activity against Candida albicans of copper metallic nanostructures and hierarchical copper oxide marigold-like nanostructures grown in situ in the culture medium

AIMS

This study aimed to determine in vitro activity of copper nanoparticles and copper nanowires against Candida albicans strains and to assess their effects on morphology and submicron structure.

METHODS AND RESULTS

The microdilution method determined the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and copper nanowires (CuNWs) against three strains of C. albicans: ATCC 10231 and two clinical strains (C and E). Effects on the morphology and ultrastructure of C. albicans strains were examined by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. MIC for CuNPs was 129·7 µg ml^-1 for strain ATCC 10231, 1037·5 µg ml^-1 for strain C and 518·8 µg ml^-1 for strain E. MIC for CuNWs was similar for all strains tested (260·3 µg ml^-1 ). SEM and TEM studies showed alterations in morphology, cell wall and the complete collapse of the yeast after incubation with CuNPs. In contrast, most of the yeast cells maintained their structure with an intact cell wall, and only decreased the number and size of fimbriae when C. albicans was exposed to CuNWs. CuNPs and CuNWs formed hierarchical copper oxide nanostructures growing in situ in the culture medium. Results suggest a dual mechanism for antifungal activity: (i) free Cu²⁺ ions act as a biocide, (ii) sharp edges of marigold-like petal nanostructures could injure the cellular wall and membrane and cause the death of the yeast.

CONCLUSIONS

CuNPs and CuNWs inhibited the growth of the three strains of C. albicans tested. Moreover, CuNPs disrupted cell wall with leakage of the cytoplasmic content. Each concentration of the series used for the determination of the activity of CuNPs and nanowires against C. albicans formed copper oxide marigold-like nanostructures.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

This study suggests that CuNPs and CuNWs are good candidates for formulating new therapeutic agents for candidiasis.

Effect of crystallographic texture on magnetic characteristics of cobalt nanowires

Cobalt nanowires with controlled diameters have been synthesized using electrochemical deposition in etched ion-track polycarbonate membranes. Structural characterization of these nanowires with diameter 70, 90, 120 nm and length 30 μm was performed by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The as-prepared wires show uniform diameter along the whole length and X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that [002] texture of these wires become more pronounced as diameter is reduced. Magnetic characterization of the nanowires shows a clear difference of squareness and coercivity between parallel and perpendicular orientations of the wires with respect to the applied field direction. In case of parallel applied field, the coercivity has been found to be decreasing with increasing diameter of the wires while in perpendicular case; the coercivity observes lower values for larger diameter. The results are explained by taking into account the magnetocrystalline and shape anisotropies with respect to the applied field and domain transformation mechanism when single domain limit is surpassed.

Nanopores in track-etched polymer membranes characterized by small-angle x-ray scattering

Nanochannels and nanowires with diameters ranging from 30 to 400 nm were produced by etching ion tracks in thin polyarylate and polycarbonate foils. The shape and the size distribution of dry and wet nanochannels, as well as of nanowires grown therein, were examined by small-angle x-ray scattering. The x-ray intensity as a function of the scattering vector exhibits pronounced oscillations showing that both the channels and the wires have a highly cylindrical geometry and a very narrow size distribution. UV exposure before chemical etching significantly improves the monodispersity of the nanopores. For fixed etching conditions, the scattering patterns provide evidence that the diameter of dry and water-filled channels as well as for embedded nanowires are identical, demonstrating that the pores in the polymer are completely filled.
