Production of nanometer-size GaAs nanocristals by nanosecond laser ablation in liquid

Three-Dimensional Superlattice of PbS Quantum Dots in Flakes

In the last two decades, many experiments were conducted in self-organization of nanocrystals into two- and three-dimensional (3D) superlattices and the superlattices were synthesized and characterized by different techniques, revealing their unusual properties. Among all characterization techniques, X-ray diffraction (XRD) is the one that has allowed the confirmation of the 3D superlattice formation due to the presence of sharp and intense diffraction peaks. In this work, we study self-organized superlattices of quantum dots of PbS prepared by dropping a monodispersed colloidal solution on a glass substrate at different temperatures. We showed that the intensity of the low-angle XRD peaks depends strongly on the drying time (substrate temperature). We claim that the peaks are originated from the 3D superlattice. Scanning electron microscopy images show that this 3D superlattice (PbS quantum dots) is formed in flake's shape, parallel to the substrate surface and randomly oriented in the perpendicular planes.

Random Lasing at Localization Transition in a Colloidal Suspension (TiO2@Silica)

Anderson localization of light and random lasing in this critical regime is an open research frontier, which besides being a basic research topic could also lead to important applications. This article investigates the random laser action at the localization transition in a strongly disordered scattering medium composed of a colloidal suspension of core-shell nanoparticles (TiO₂@Silica) in ethanol solution of Rhodamine 6G. The classical superfluorescence band of the random laser was measured separately by collecting the emission at the back of the samples, showing a linear dependence with pumping fluence without gain depletion. However, frontal collection showed saturation of the absorption and emission. Narrow peaks of approximately equal intensity are observed on top of the classical superfluorescence band, indicating suppression of the interaction between the peaks modes. The linewidth of these peaks is lower than that of the passive modes of the scattering medium. A method called fraction of absorbed pumping allowed us to infer that this peak's mode (localized modes) is confined to a shallow region near the input-pumping border.

Anderson localization of light in a colloidal suspension (TiO2@silica)

In recent years, there has been dramatic progress in the photonics field in disordered media, ranging from applications in solar collectors, photocatalyzers, random lasing, and other novel photonic functions, to investigations into fundamental topics, such as light confinement and other phenomena involving photon interactions. This paper reports several pieces of experimental evidence of localization transition in a strongly disordered scattering medium composed of a colloidal suspension of core-shell nanoparticles (TiO2@silica) in ethanol solution. We demonstrate the crossover from a diffusive transport to a localization transition regime as the nanoparticle concentration is increased, and that an enhanced absorption effect arises at localization transition.

ns or fs pulsed laser ablation of a bulk InSb target in liquids for nanoparticles synthesis

Laser ablation of bulk target materials in liquids has been established as an alternative method for the synthesis of nanoparticles colloidal solutions mainly due to the fact that the synthesized nanoparticles have bare, ligand-free surfaces since no chemical precursors are used for their synthesis. InSb is a narrow band gap semiconductor which has the highest carrier mobility of any known semiconductor and nanoparticles of this material are useful in optoelectronic device fabrication. In this paper a bulk InSb target was ablated in deionized (DI) water or ethanol using a nanosecond (20 ns) or a femtosecond (90 fs) pulsed laser source, for nanoparticles synthesis. In all four cases the largest percentage of the nanoparticles are of InSb in the zincblende crystal structure with fcc lattice. Oxides of either In or Sb are also formed in the nanoparticles ensembles in the case of ns or fs ablation, respectively. Formation of an oxide of either element from the two elements of the binary bulk alloy is explained based on the difference in the ablation mechanism of the material in the case of ns or fs pulsed laser irradiation in which the slow or fast deposition of energy into the material results to mainly melting or vaporization, respectively under the present conditions of ablation, in combination with the lower melting point but higher vaporization enthalpy of In as compared to Sb. InSb in the metastable phase with orthorhombic lattice is also formed in the nanoparticles ensembles in the case of fs ablation in DI water (as well as oxide of InSb) which indicates that the synthesized nanoparticles exhibit polymorphism controlled by the type of the laser source used for their synthesis. The nanoparticles exhibit absorption which is observed to be extended in the infrared region of the spectrum.

Synthesis of Ag@Silica Nanoparticles by Assisted Laser Ablation

This paper reports the synthesis of silver nanoparticles coated with porous silica (Ag@Silica NPs) using an assisted laser ablation method. This method is a chemical synthesis where one of the reagents (the reducer agent) is introduced in nanometer form by laser ablation of a solid target submerged in an aqueous solution. In a first step, a silicon wafer immersed in water solution was laser ablated for several minutes. Subsequently, an AgNO3 aliquot was added to the aqueous solution. The redox reaction between the silver ions and ablation products leads to a colloidal suspension of core-shell Ag@Silica NPs. The influence of the laser pulse energy, laser wavelength, ablation time, and Ag(+) concentration on the size and optical properties of the Ag@Silica NPs was investigated. Furthermore, the colloidal suspensions were studied by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).

Study on the productivity of silicon nanoparticles by picosecond laser ablation in water: towards gram per hour yield

An investigation on the productivity of silicon nanoparticles by picosecond laser ablation in water is presented. A systematic experimental study is performed as function of the laser wavelength, fluence and ablation time. In case of ablation at 1064 nm silicon nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 40 nm are produced. Instead, ablation at 355 nm results in nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 9 nm for short ablation time while the mean diameter decreases to 3 nm at longer ablation time. An original model based on the in-situ ablation/photo-fragmentation physical process is developed, and it very well explains the experimental productivity findings. The reported phenomenological model has a general validity, and it can be applied to analyze pulsed laser ablation in liquid in order to optimize the process parameters for higher productivity. Finally, an outlook is given towards gram per hour yield of ultra-small silicon nanoparticles.

Novel core-shell (TiO2@Silica) nanoparticles for scattering medium in a random laser: higher efficiency, lower laser threshold and lower photodegradation

There has been growing interest in scattering media in recent years, due to their potential applications as solar collectors, photocatalyzers, random lasers and other novel optical devices. Here, we have introduced a novel core-shell scattering medium for a random laser composed of TiO2@Silica nanoparticles. Higher efficiency, lower laser threshold and long photobleaching lifetime in random lasers were demonstrated. This has introduced a new method or parameter (fraction of absorbed pumping), which opens a new avenue to characterize and study the scattering media. Optical chemical and colloidal stabilities were combined by coating a suitable silica shell onto TiO2 nanoparticles.
