Featural Representation and Internal Noise Underlie the Eccentricity Effect in Contrast Sensitivity

Human visual performance for basic visual dimensions (e.g., contrast sensitivity and acuity) peaks at the fovea and decreases with eccentricity. The eccentricity effect is related to the larger visual cortical surface area corresponding to the fovea, but it is unknown if differential feature tuning contributes to this eccentricity effect. Here, we investigated two system-level computations underlying the eccentricity effect: featural representation (tuning) and internal noise. Observers (both sexes) detected a Gabor embedded in filtered white noise which appeared at the fovea or one of four perifoveal locations. We used psychophysical reverse correlation to estimate the weights assigned by the visual system to a range of orientations and spatial frequencies (SFs) in noisy stimuli, which are conventionally interpreted as perceptual sensitivity to the corresponding features. We found higher sensitivity to task-relevant orientations and SFs at the fovea than that at the perifovea, and no difference in selectivity for either orientation or SF. Concurrently, we measured response consistency using a double-pass method, which allowed us to infer the level of internal noise by implementing a noisy observer model. We found lower internal noise at the fovea than that at the perifovea. Finally, individual variability in contrast sensitivity correlated with sensitivity to and selectivity for task-relevant features as well as with internal noise. Moreover, the behavioral eccentricity effect mainly reflects the foveal advantage in orientation sensitivity compared with other computations. These findings suggest that the eccentricity effect stems from a better representation of task-relevant features and lower internal noise at the fovea than that at the perifovea.

A common computational process in cueing and conjunction search tasks

The question of whether Posner's beam is the same as Treisman's glue is addressed to construct a computational model that integrates both target and cue information. The cueing and conjunction search tasks are conducted to analyze a common process that may be underlying the tasks. The dynamic interaction between target and cue information produces attentional benefit- and cost-based in the cueing task. Furthermore, the search order for target candidates in a conjunction search task is determined through the integration of target and cue information, which is basically the same as in the cueing task. Our simulations suggest that consistency (or validity) is considered as a computational process that may be commonly involved in the both tasks.

The relationship between covert and overt attention in endogenous cuing

In a standard Posner paradigm, participants were endogenously cued to attend to a peripheral location in visual space without making eye movements. They responded faster to target letters presented at cued than at uncued locations. On some trials, instead of a manual response, they had to move their eyes to a location in space. Results showed that the eyes deviated away from the validly cued location; when the cue was invalid and attention had to be allocated to the uncued location, eye movements also deviated away, but now from the uncued location. The extent to which the eyes deviated from cued and uncued locations was related to the dynamics of attention allocation. We hypothesized that this deviation was due to the successful inhibition of the attended location. The results imply that the oculomotor system is not only involved during the endogenous direction of covert attention to a cued location, but also when covert attention is directed to an uncued location. It appears that the oculomotor system is activated wherever spatial attention is allocated. The strength of saccade deviation might turn out to be an important measure for the amount of attention allocated to any particular location over time.

An efficient technique for revealing visual search strategies with classification images

We propose a novel variant of the classification image paradigm that allows us to rapidly reveal strategies used by observers in visual search tasks. We make use of eye tracking, 1/f noise, and a grid-like stimulus ensemble and also introduce a new classification taxonomy that distinguishes between foveal and peripheral processes. We tested our method for 3 human observers and two simple shapes used as search targets. The classification images obtained show the efficacy of the proposed method by revealing the features used by the observers in as few as 200 trials. Using two control experiments, we evaluated the use of naturalistic 1/f noise with classification images, in comparison with the more commonly used white noise, and compared the performance of our technique with that of an earlier approach without a stimulus grid.

Impaired filtering of behaviourally irrelevant visual information in dyslexia

A recent proposal suggests that dyslexic individuals suffer from attentional deficiencies, which impair the ability to selectively process incoming visual information. To investigate this possibility, we employed a spatial cueing procedure in conjunction with a single fixation visual search task measuring thresholds for discriminating the orientation of a target stimulus. Replicating preliminary findings in an earlier report, we found evidence of a striking dissociation between dyslexic participants' performance in cued and uncued conditions. Whereas uncued search results were equivalent for dyslexic and normal adult readers, the majority of dyslexic individuals failed to display a comparable benefit when the location of the target was indicated by the appearance of a brief peripheral pre-cue. Using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, we further demonstrate that the effectiveness of the cueing task at discriminating between dyslexic and normal readers surpasses that of a range of other psychophysical tasks typically used in dyslexia research. Moreover, we find that the discriminative accuracy of the task is at least on par with measures of verbal short-term memory (a core component of phonological processing), which ranks as one of the most widely accepted areas of difficulty in dyslexia. Potential mechanisms underlying the cueing effect are outlined, and the plausibility of each considered within a signal detection theory framework of visual search. It is argued that performance benefits obtained by normal readers in cued conditions most likely reflect the prioritization of target information during decision making, and could feasibly be subserved by top-down biasing effects on pooling processes in extrastriate cortex.

Attentional selection: A salience-based competition for representation

The role of salience in localized attentional interference (LAI) was examined. In two experiments, target discrimination performance was measured as a function of the spatial separation between the target and a salient distractor item. In Experiment 1, both the salience of the distractor and that of a target were manipulated. Distractor salience was manipulated via size changes to the distractor, and target salience was manipulated by using unmasked or onset targets. When the target was of low salience, the magnitude of interference from the distractor increased with distractor salience. However, when the target had an abrupt onset, the distractor had no impact on target performance. In Experiment 2, the attentional salience of the distractor was manipulated using a probability manipulation. Displays contained both a target and a color singleton distractor. The color singleton produced LAI when it was predictive of the target location but not when it was unpredictive of the target location. The results of both experiments are consistent with models of competition-based attentional selection.

The time course of visual information accrual guiding eye movement decisions

Saccadic eye movements are the result of neural decisions about where to move the eyes. These decisions are based on visual information accumulated before the saccade; however, during an approximately 100-ms interval immediately before the initiation of an eye movement, new visual information cannot influence the decision. Does the brain simply ignore information presented during this brief interval or is the information used for the subsequent saccade? Our study examines how and when the brain integrates visual information through time to drive saccades during visual search. We introduce a new technique, saccade-contingent reverse correlation, that measures the time course of visual information accrual driving the first and second saccades. Observers searched for a contrast-defined target among distractors. Independent contrast noise was added to the target and distractors every 25 ms. Only noise presented in the time interval in which the brain accumulates information will influence the saccadic decisions. Therefore, we can retrieve the time course of saccadic information accrual by averaging the time course of the noise, aligned to saccade initiation, across all trials with saccades to distractors. Results show that before the first saccade, visual information is being accumulated simultaneously for the first and second saccades. Furthermore, information presented immediately before the first saccade is not used in making the first saccadic decision but instead is stored and used by the neural processes driving the second saccade.
