Abstract
In this paper, we are going to investigate the association between Hypertension (HTN) and routine hematologic indices in a cohort of Iranian adults. The data were obtained from a total population of 9704 who were aged 35-65 years, a prospective study was designed. The association between hematologic factors and HTN was assessed using logistic regression (LR) analysis and a decision tree (DT) algorithm. A total of 9704 complete datasets were analyzed in this cohort study (N = 3070 with HTN [female 62.47% and male 37.52%], N = 6634 without HTN [female 58.90% and male 41.09%]). Several variables were significantly different between the two groups, including age, smoking status, BMI, diabetes millitus, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), uric acid, FBS, total cholesterol, HGB, LYM, WBC, PDW, RDW, RBC, sex, PLT, MCV, SBP, DBP, BUN, and HCT (P < 0.05). For unit odds ratio (OR) interpretation, females are more likely to have HTN (OR = 1.837, 95% CI = (1.620, 2.081)). Among the analyzed variables, age and WBC had the most significant associations with HTN OR = 1.087, 95% CI = (1.081, 1.094) and OR = 1.096, 95% CI = (1.061, 1.133), respectively (P-value < 0.05). In the DT model, age, followed by WBC, sex, and PDW, has the most significant impact on the HTN risk. Ninety-eight percent of patients had HTN in the subgroup with older age (≥58), high PDW (≥17.3), and low RDW (<46). Finally, we found that elevated WBC and PDW are the most associated factor with the severity of HTN in the Mashhad general population as well as female gender and older age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cell counting in peripheral blood samples and their combinations have gained wide usage in clinical research due to their convenient and minimally invasive sampling method. This study aims to evaluate the predictive value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic Immunoinflammatory Index (SII), and systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI), and platelet distribution width (PDW) for the occurrence of non-arteritic Central retinal artery occlusion (NA-CRAO). METHODS We included 123 patients diagnosed with NA-CRAO and 120 age-, sex- and blood pressure-matched individuals in this study. All participants underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic assessment. Peripheral blood samples were retrospectively analysed to obtain patients' blood counts and platelet-related indices, and further NLR, SII and SIRI were calculated. RESULTS NLR, SII, SIRI, and PDW were all found to be elevated and significantly different in NA-CRAO patients compared to controls (p < 0.05). Notably, elevated NLR and PDW were identified as independent influences on the development of NA-CRAO, with a combined predicted AUC of 0.876. CONCLUSION The utilization of NLR and PDW in NA-CRAO prediction may prove to be more effective compared to SII and SIRI.

Abstract
Hypertension (HT) is a common chronic disease that often causes target-organ damage and severe complications, contributing to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. Accumulating evidence suggests that inflammation plays a prominent role in the initiation and progression of HT. Multiple inflammatory biomarkers have been proposed to predict HT. Several new hematological parameters can reflect the inflammatory response and platelet activation. The major advantage of hematological parameters over conventional inflammatory markers is that they are relatively inexpensive and easily obtained from routine blood tests. Numerous studies have investigated several hematological parameters for their utility as predictive biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of HT. Among them, the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte to high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR), red cell distribution width (RDW), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) have recently received attention. We searched PubMed and Embase databases (up to September 18, 2022) to assess the relationships between hematological parameters and HT. This review discusses the diagnostic and prognostic value of these hematological parameters in HT, providing an important basis for early screening, risk stratification, and optimal management of hypertensive patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The aim of this study was to reveal statistical patterns in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) that cause the development of carbohydrate metabolism disorders (CMD) (type 2 diabetes mellitus and prediabetes) and death within 5 years after AMI. METHODS 1079 patients who were treated with AMI in the Almazov National Medical Research Center were retrospectively selected for the study. For each patient, all data from electronic medical records were downloaded. Statistical patterns that determine the development of CMDs and death within 5 years after AMI were identified. To create and train the models used in this study, the classic methods of Data Mining, Data Exploratory Analysis, and Machine Learning were used. RESULTS The main predictors of mortality within 5 years after AMI were advanced age, low relative level of lymphocytes, circumflex artery lesion, and glucose level. Main predictors of CMDs were low basophils, high neutrophils, high platelet distribution width, and high blood glucose level. High values of age and glucose together were relatively independent predictors. With glucose level >11 mmol/L and age >70 years, the 5-year risk of death is about 40% and it rises with increasing glucose levels. CONCLUSION The obtained results make it possible to predict the development of CMDs and death based on simple parameters that are easily available in clinical practice. Glucose level measured on the 1st day of AMI was among the most important predictors of CMDs and death.

Abstract
Hypertension is a chronic disease with high levels of morbidity and disability. Elevated blood pressure can lead to many complications and is the main risk factor for stroke, heart failure and nephropathy. Factors associated with hypertension and inflammatory response differ from those associated with vascular inflammation. The immune system plays a vital role in the pathophysiology of hypertension. Inflammation is particularly relevant in the progression of cardiovascular diseases, which has led to extensive research on inflammatory markers and indicators.

Abstract
Electrolytes imbalances are highly prevalent and have shown a high impact on mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction. These electrolytes imbalance have prognostic value in predicting mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction. The purpose of this study was to assess the prognostic value of electrolyte imbalances in predicting 1-month mortality among patients with myocardial infarction with and with no ST-elevation. This cohort study was conducted in a referral hospital in the West Bank, Palestine. All patients with confirmed medical diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction and admitted to the medical coronary care unit in the hospital were eligible participants. A convenience sample of 186 participants was obtained. These participants were followed up for 1 month to assess their survival (alive or dead). Demographic and clinical data were recorded by reviewing their health records. The derived data were analyzed using SPSS version 19. About 36% of all patients were found to be hyponatremic, 15% of them have hypokalemia, and 9% of patients had hypocalcemia. There was a significant difference between STEMI and non-STEMI in sodium (t = 4.7, P < .001). A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to predict 1-month mortality for patients with myocardial infarction with and with no ST-elevation. The predictors that were found to be significant are sodium (odds ratio [OR] = 0.789, P = .010), calcium (OR = 0.221, P = .014), diastolic blood pressure (OR = 0.933, P = .047), and blood urea nitrogen (OR = 0.821, P = .005). Electrolyte imbalance was highly prevalent among patients with acute myocardial infarction. Hyponatremia and hypocalcemia were present and associated significantly with predicting 1-month mortality. Health care providers should take into consideration the electrolytes of patients with acute myocardial infarction from the first moment of admission and correct them early to maximize the clinical outcomes and survival for patients.

Abstract
Background Thrombosis and inflammation are crucial elements in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Hematological parameters elucidate information involving the inflammatory and blood coagulation processes. Objectives The current study explored the association of hematological parameters with EOCAD to identify specific risk factors. Design A single-center retrospective case-control study was conducted with 1693 coronary artery disease patients and 1693 controls. Methods Hematological parameters were examined through an automated analyzer. Results The basophil percentage was significantly reduced in EOCAD (0.43 ± 0.26, p < 0.001) and MI (0.33 ± 0.24, p < 0.001) groups compared with controls (0.54 ± 0.28). The eosinophil percentage was also significantly lower in EOCAD (2.21 ± 1.71, p < 0.001) and MI (1.71 ± 2.44, p < 0.001) groups compared with controls (2.41 ± 1.75). The lymphocyte percentage in patients of EOCAD and MI and controls was 31.65 ± 7.93, 25.48 ± 9.43, and 34.82 ± 7.28, respectively. A significant difference was observed among the groups (p < 0.001). Except for the mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), other red blood cell (RBC) parameters significantly differed between EOCAD patients and controls. The red blood cell distribution width (RDW), hematocrit (HCT), RBC count, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and hemoglobin level were associated with EOCAD prevalence after adjusting for baseline differences. Platelet volume distribution width (PDW) also correlated with EOCAD prevalence (ORadjust = 1.087, 95% CI: 1.044-1.131). Conclusions Hematological parameters are closely associated with EOCAD. Moreover, leukocyte parameters correlated with the presence and severity of the disease. In addition, erythrocyte parameters were associated with the disease presence but not with the disease severity. Among the platelet parameters, only PDW was related to the disease presence.

Abstract
Acromegaly is a chronic systemic disease characterized by autonomous and excessive secretion of growth hormone (GH). Acromegaly is most commonly caused by ais a somatotroph adenoma of the anterior pituitary. In acromegaly, mortality primarily results from are cerebrovascular, cardiovascular, respiratory diseases and malignancies. Monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), red cell distribution width (RDW), platelet distribution width (PDW) and delta neutrophil index (DNI) are popular inflammatory markers. This study's purpose was to assess pre/post-treatment levels of NLR, GH, RDW, MLR, PDW and DNI in acromegalic patients and to investigate the impact of acromegaly treatment on these markers.

Abstract
Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is a global health problem that affects about 1% of the global population. Animal models of PH play a vital role in unraveling the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease. The present study proposes a Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (KELM) model based on an improved Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) for predicting PH mouse models. The experimental results showed that the selected blood indicators, including Haemoglobin (HGB), Hematocrit (HCT), Mean, Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet distribution width (PDW), and Platelet-Large Cell Ratio (P-LCR), were essential for identifying PH mouse models using the feature selection method proposed in this paper. Remarkably, the method achieved 100.0% accuracy and 100.0% specificity in classification, demonstrating that our method has great potential to be used for evaluating and identifying mouse PH models.

Abstract
Background Coronary microcirculatory dysfunction is a meaningful factor in the development of ischemic heart disease. We investigated the relationship between coronary microvascular spasm and complete blood count indices. Methods Between 2010 and 2013, we performed acetylcholine test (AChT) in subjects with suspicion of angina evoked by epicardial coronary spasm or coronary microvascular spasm according to COVADIS criteria. We administered acetylcholine in increasing doses of 25, 50, and 75 μg into the right coronary artery and 25, 50, and 100 μg into the left coronary artery. Patients were followed up for 60 months. Results In total, 211 patients (60.5 ± 7.8 years, 67.8% women) were included in the study. The AChT revealed angina due to epicardial coronary spasm in 99 patients (46.9%) and coronary microvascular spasm in 72 (34.1%). White blood cell (WBC), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), platelets (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) values were significantly higher in patients with coronary microvascular spasm than in patients from the other two groups, i.e., epicardial coronary spasm and negative AChT. PDW showed the highest sensitivity (65%) and specificity (72%) at the cutoff value of 15.32% [area under the curve, 0.723; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.64–0.83; P < 0.001]. Independent risk factors for coronary microvascular spasm diagnosis using AChT were as follows: female sex (OR, 1.199), PDW (OR, 2.891), and RDW (OR, 1.567). Conclusion PDW and RDW are significantly associated with the diagnosis of coronary microvascular spasm in patients undergoing AChT as well as with poor prognosis in such patients at 5 years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are reported to be associated with inflammation. We aimed to determine the association between RDW and PDW with autoimmune liver disease (ALD). MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 126 patients who were diagnosed with ALD. Sixty-nine healthy individuals represented the control group. Characteristics and laboratory parameters of the ALD patients and control subjects were compared. RESULTS The aspartate transaminase (AST) (P < 0.001), alanine transaminase (ALT) (P < 0.001), C-reactive protein (CRP) (P < 0.001), RDW (P < 0.001) and PDW (P < 0.001) levels of the ALD group were significantly higher than those of the control subjects. RDW was significantly correlated with AST (r = 0.17, P = 0.02) and CRP (r = 0.19, P = 0.01) levels. Moreover, PDW was significantly correlated with AST (r = 0.23, P = 0.002), ALT (r = 0.23, P = 0.001) and CRP (r = 0.23, P = 0.001) levels. The sensitivity and specificity of RDW higher than 13.7% level were 76% and 62%, respectively [AUC: 0.74, P < 0.001, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.67-0.81]. The sensitivity and specificity of PDW higher than 17.9% level were 80% and 71%, respectively (AUC: 0.85, P < 0.001, 95% CI: 0.79-0.90). The sensitivity and specificity of CRP higher than 2.9 U/l level were 92% and 85%, respectively (AUC: 0.91, P < 0.001, 95% CI: 0.86-0.95). CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates that RDW and PDW have considerable sensitivity and specificity in determining ALD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study was aimed to establish a prediction model for in-stent restenosis (ISR) in subjects who had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DESs). MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted. From September 2010 to September 2013, we included 968 subjects who had received coronary follow-up angiography after primary PCI. The logistic regression analysis, receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analysis, nomogram analysis, Hosmer-Lemeshow χ2 statistic, and calibration curve were applied to build and evaluate the prediction model. RESULTS Fifty-six patients (5.79%) occurred ISR. The platelet distribution width (PDW), total cholesterol (TC), systolic blood pressure (SBP), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and lesion vessels had significant differences between ISR and non-ISR groups (all P < 0.05). And these variables were independently associated with ISR (all P < 0.05). Furthermore, they were identified as predictors (all AUC > 0.5 and P < 0.05) to establish a prediction model. The prediction model showed a good value of area under curve (AUC) (95%CI): 0.72 (0.64-0.80), and its optimized cut-off was 6.39 with 71% sensitivity and 65% specificity to predict ISR. CONCLUSION The incidence of ISR is 5.79% in CAD patients with DES implantation in the Xinjiang population, China. The prediction model based on PDW, SBP, TC, LDL-C, and lesion vessels was an effective model to predict ISR in CAD patients with DESs implantation.

Abstract
The values of hematological and coagulation biomarkers were evaluated as predictors of in hospital mortality and complications, in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). This retrospective observational study enrolled 936 ACS subjects admitted to the Clinical Emergency Hospital of Oradea, Romania, between January-December 2019. Hematological and coagulation parameters were obtained at admission. During hospitalization, the following adverse events were recorded: death, ventricular rhythm disturbances, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, re-infarction, and stroke. Accuracy of hematological and coagulation parameters as predictors of adverse outcome were also evaluated. The diagnosis was unstable angina in 442 patients (47.22%), non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) in 113 patients (12.1%) and ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in 381 patients (40.70%); 87 patients (9.29%) died during hospitalization and 193 (20.7%) developed complications. Predictors for in hospital mortality were as follows: red cell distribution width (RDW) (AUC 0.691, p < 0.0001), white blood cells (WBC) (AUC 0.684, p < 0.0001), neutrophils (NEU) (AUC 0.684, p < 0.0001), and prothrombin time (PT) (AUC 0.765, p < 0.0001). WBC (AUC 0.659, p < 0.0001), NEU (AUC 0.664, p < 0.0001), RDW (AUC 0.669, p < 0.0001), and PT (AUC 0.669, 95% CI 0.622-0.714, p < 0.0001) also had accuracy for complications prediction. RDW had a good ability to predict heart failure in NSTEMI patients (AUC 0.832, p < 0.0001). An acceptable ability to predict ventricular rhythm disturbances occurrence had WBC (AUC 0.758, p < 0.0001) and NEU (AUC 0.772, p < 0.0001). Hematological and coagulation parameters can help in risk stratification of ACS patients. RDW, WBC, NEU, and PT were able to predict mortality and in-hospital complications in ACS patients. RDW has a good accuracy in predicting complications and heart failure in NSTEMI patients. WBC and NEU are good predictors for ventricular rhythm disturbances.

Abstract
The prevalence of hypertension has increased rapidly in recent years. Currently, increasing attention has been paid to the relationship between hypertension and platelet abnormalities. As a simple and available platelet parameter, platelet distribution width (PDW) can reflect platelet abnormalities and further reflect the risk of thrombotic diseases. However, the views on PDW and hypertension are controversial at present studies. Hence, we aimed to find the associations between PDW and hypertension subtypes in the present study. A total of 73,469 participants (44,665 males and 28,804 females) were enrolled. We found that PDW was a risk factor for isolated systolic hypertension (ISH), and the risk of ISH increased with PDW quartiles among women. In men, high PDW might be a risk factor for isolated diastolic hypertension and systolic–diastolic hypertension.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of mean platelet volume/platelet count ratio (MPR) for coronary plaque features in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A total of 275 STEMI patients undergoing preintervention optical coherence tomography examination were included, with 142 categorized as plaque rupture (PR) and 133 as plaque erosion (PE). Multivariable logistic regression showed higher MPR was an independent predictor of PR (tertile 3 vs tertile 1, odds ratio: 6.257, 95% confidence interval: 1.586-24.686, P = 0.009). MPR showed better diagnostic performance than other platelet indices. The optimal MPR threshold for diagnosing PR was 0.0473 (sensitivity: 0.721, specificity: 0.647). When added to models of established risk factors, MPR significantly improved the predictive accuracy of PR (area under the curve: 0.767 vs 0.722, P difference = 0.004). In conclusion, for STEMI patients, MPR was an independent predictor of PR and improved diagnostic performance for PR.

Abstract
Background The prognostic impact of platelet distribution width (PDW), which is a specific marker of platelet activation, has been unclear in patients with heart failure (HF). Methods and results We conducted a prospective observational study enrolling 1,746 hospitalized patients with HF. Patients were divided into tertiles based on levels of PDW: 1st (PDW < 15.9 fL, n = 586), 2nd (PDW 15.9–16.8 fL, n = 617), and 3rd (PDW ≥ 16.9, n = 543) tertiles. We compared baseline patients’ characteristics and post-discharge prognosis: all-cause death; cardiac death; and cardiac events. The 3rd tertile showed the highest age and levels of B-type natriuretic peptide compared to other tertiles (1st, 2nd, and 3rd tertiles; age, 69.0, 68.0, and 70.0 years old, P = 0.038; B-type natriuretic peptide, 235.2, 171.9, and 241.0 pg/mL, P < 0.001). Left ventricular ejection fraction was equivalent among the tertiles. In the Kaplan-Meier analysis, rates of all endpoints were the highest in the 3rd tertile (log-rank P < 0.001, respectively). The Cox proportional hazard analysis revealed that the 3rd tertile was associated with adverse prognosis (all-cause death, hazard ratio [HR] 1.716, P < 0.001; cardiac death, HR 1.919, P < 0.001; cardiac event, HR 1.401, P = 0.002). Conclusions High PDW is a novel predictor of adverse prognosis in patients with HF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Coronary collateral development (CCD) predicts the severity of coronary heart disease. Hemogram parameters, such as mean platelet volume (MPV), eosinophil, red cell distribution width, and platelet distribution width (PDW), are supposed novel inflammatory markers. METHODS A total of 177 patients with NSTEMI undergoing coronary arteriography were enrolled and divided into two groups based on the development of CCD: one group with adequate CCD (n=88) and the other with impaired CCD (n=89). RESULTS Baseline demographics and clinical risk factors were similar between the groups. Hemogram parameters were not significantly different between the two groups. However, compared to the inadequate CCD group, the median PDW was significantly higher in the adequate CCD group, 17.6 (1.4) vs. 17.8 (1.6) p=0.004. In a multivariate analysis, PDW (p=0.001, 95% CI for OR: 0.489(0,319-0,750) was found to be significantly different in the adequate CCD group compared to the inadequate CCD group. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that PDW was significantly correlated with the Rentrop score (r=0.26, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS We suggest that since PDW is an index that is inexpensive and easy to assess, it could serve as a marker of CCD in patients with NSTEMI.

Abstract
Minipigs are a group of small-sized swine lines, which show a broad range of phenotype variation and which often tend to be obese. The SLAdd (DD) minipig line was created by the NIH and selected as homozygous at the SLA locus. It was brought to France more than 30 years ago and maintained inbred ever since. In this report, we characterized the physiological status of a herd of French DD pigs by measuring intermediate phenotypes from blood and faeces and by using Large White (LW) pigs as controls. Three datasets were produced, i.e. complete blood counts (CBCs), microarray-based blood transcriptome, and faecal microbiota obtained by 16S rRNA sequencing. CBCs and expression profiles suggested a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)-related pathology associated to comorbid cardiac diseases. The characterization of 16S sequencing data was less straightforward, suggesting only a potential weak link to obesity. The integration of the datasets identified several fine-scale associations between CBCs, gene expression, and faecal microbiota composition. NAFLD is a common cause of chronic liver disease in Western countries and is linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiac pathologies. Here we show that the French DD herd is potentially affected by this syndrome.

Abstract
Catheter-directed intra-arterial thrombolysis (CDT) is a rational treatment method in patients with acute/subacute and even some chronic occlusions of lower extremity arteries and bypass grafts having salvageable limb ischemia. Immediate vessel patency can be achieved with an acceptable complication rate in many patients, especially those with fresh thrombus or emboli. It can be also an adjuvant treatment modality for endovascular interventions for chronic occlusions. There is no standard method of CDT including thrombolytic agent dose and technique. Selection of treatment strategy should be based on individual judgment based on viability of limb, lesion characteristics, and risks of hemorrhage.

Abstract
Major advances in coronary interventional techniques and pharmacotherapy as well as the use of drug-eluting stents (DESs) have considerably reduced the risk of in-stent restenosis (ISR). However, ISR remains a major clinical challenge. Inflammation and platelet activation are important processes that underlie the pathophysiology of ISR. Parameters related to blood cells, entailing both cell count and morphology, are useful markers of the inflammatory response and platelet activation in clinical practice. Recent studies have highlighted several new combined or derived parameters related to blood cells that independently predict ISR after DES implantation. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, an inflammatory marker, is regarded as a predictor of the risk of ISR and the stability of atherosclerotic plaques. The mean platelet volume, a widely used platelet activation parameter, has been shown to be a predictor of the risk of ISR and the efficacy of antiplatelet therapy. Other markers considered include the platelet/lymphocyte ratio, red blood cell distribution width, and platelet distribution width. This review provides an overview of these parameters that may help stratify the risk of coronary angiographic and clinical outcomes related to ISR.

Abstract
Introduction and objective ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is caused by formation of a thrombus at a ruptured atheromatous plaque. Larger platelets are enzymatically and metabolically more active and play a crucial role in thrombus formation. Our objective was to study the association between platelet volume indices (mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW)) and STEMI. Methods A hospital-based case control study to compare the platelet indices of 52 STEMI patients before commencing antiplatelet therapy and age and gender matched 52 controls who had no history of ischemic heart disease or antiplatelet therapy. Blood samples were collected to EDTA bottles and analyzed using Mindray BC 6800 automated analyzer. Results STEMI patients had significantly increased mean MPV and PDW compared to the control group ((8.22 ± 0.99 fL vs 7.74 ± 0.69 fL, p = 0.005) and (15.81 ± 0.41 fL vs 15.62 ± 0.33 fL, p = 0.007) respectively). Significant positive correlation existed between MPV and PDW (R = 0.556, p = 0.000) and weak negative correlation in platelet count with MPV (R = -0.323, p = 0.019) and PDW (R = -0.309, p = 0.026) of STEMI patients. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves showed that MPV and PDW with cutoff values of 7.55 fL, 15.55 fL and with Area under the curve (AUC) of 0.640, 0.620 respectively. The sensitivities and specificities were found to be 73.1%, 69.2% and 61.5%, 55.8% for MPV and PDW respectively. Conclusion Increased MPV and PDW were found to have a significant association with STEMI and this test has the potential to be used as a preliminary test to identify high-risk patient for myocardial infarction.

Abstract
Background The intensity of the inflammatory response and hemodynamic repercussion in acute myocardial infarction causing the presence in the peripheral circulation of nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs), increases in mean platelet volume (MPV) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are associated with a poorer prognosis. The aim of this study was to assess the role of these hematological biomarkers as predictors of all causes of mortality during the hospitalization of patients with acute myocardial infarction. Methods Nucleated red blood cells, mean platelet volume and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio were measured daily during the hospitalization of the patients with acute myocardial infarction. We excluded patients younger than 18 years, on glucocorticoid therapy, with cancer or hematological diseases and those that were readmitted after hospital discharge. We performed a multiple logistic analysis to identify independent predictors of mortality. Results We included 466 patients (mean age 64.2 ± 12.8 years, 61.6% male). The prevalence of NRBCs in the sample was 9.1% (42 patients), with levels > 200/μL in 27 patients (5.8%). The mean MPV value was 10.9 ±0,9 and the mean NLR value was 3.71 (2,38; 5,72). In a multivariate analysis of serum NRBCs (HR 2.42, 95% CI: 1.35–4.36, p = 0.003), MPV (HR 2.97, 95% CI: 1.15–7.67, p = 0.024) and NLR (HR 5.02, 95% CI: 1.68–15.0, p = 0.004). The presence in the peripheral blood of NRBCs, increased in mean platelet volume and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio were associated with higher mortality. Conclusions Nucleated red blood cells, mean platelet volume and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio are independent predictors of intrahospital mortality. Therefore, an important tool in intrahospital clinical surveillance.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to investigate platelet parameters in populations with hypertension subtypes among the Han, Uygur, and Kazakh ethnic groups and their associated risk factors in Xinjiang, northwestern China. In total, 9816 adult participants were recruited from a multiethnic, cross-sectional cardiovascular risk survey. Our results indicated that the platelet counts in Han, Uygur, and Kazakh participants with isolated systolic hypertension (ISH), isolated diastolic hypertension (IDH), and systolic diastolic hypertension (SDH) varied significantly (P < 0.001). Additionally, the mean platelet volume (MPV) in Han, Uygur, and Kazakh participants with ISH was significantly different (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the individual platelet parameters had different associated risk factors. For example, the risk factors for platelet counts were Uygur ethnicity, Kazakh ethnicity, drinking, ISH, diabetes, and high triglycerides (TGs). The risk factors for MPV were Uygur ethnicity, smoking, overweight, obesity, ISH, IDH, diabetes, and high TGs. Gender was a risk factor for abnormal plateletcrit (PCT) values. Only a low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was found to be a risk factor for platelet distribution width (PDW). We suggest that more attention should be paid to platelet parameters and the associated risk factors to reinforce the effect of antiplatelet therapy and to provide a clinical basis for preventing the occurrence of thrombosis complications and cerebro- and cardiovascular diseases effectively.

Abstract
Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Accordingly, studies from many countries around the world have shown an association between Lp-PLA2 and cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), but this association has not been documented among the Chinese. The aim of this study was to assess the use of Lp-PLA2 as a useful marker for predicting the long-term prognosis of Chinese patients with ACS undergoing PCI. A total of 651 consecutive patients undergoing PCI between September 2013 and January 2015 were divided into 2 groups: the high Lp-PLA2 group (n = 262, Lp-PLA2 > 138 nmol/L) and the low Lp-PLA2 group (n = 389, Lp-PLA2 ≤ 138 nmol/L). The end point was all-cause mortality and rehospitalization. The median follow-up was 24 months. Multivariate analysis showed that high Lp-PLA2 was an independent predictor of all-cause mortality and rehospitalization (hazard ratio: 1.429, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.411-1.448; P < .05). The Lp-PLA2 had good accuracy for predicting all-cause mortality and rehospitalization among patients with ACS undergoing PCI (area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve: 0.858, 95% CI: 0.819-0.898; P < .05), and a good correlation with the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Event score ( r = 0.525, P < .05). This study provided evidence that Lp-PLA2 could predict all-cause mortality and rehospitalization risk among patients with ACS undergoing PCI.

Abstract
An increased systemic and local inflammation plays a key role in the pathophysiology of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This review will discuss the role of hematological indices: white blood cells (WBC), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), red cell distribution width (RDW), and platelet indices, that is, platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) in the case of ACS. In recent years, a strong interest has been drawn to these indices, given that they may provide independent information on pathophysiology, risk stratification, and optimal management. Their low-cost and consequent wide and easy availability in daily clinical practice have made them very popular in the laboratory testing. Furthermore, many studies have pointed at their effective prognostic value in all-cause mortality, major cardiovascular events, stent thrombosis, arrhythmias, and myocardial perfusion disorders in terms of acute myocardial infarction and unstable angina. The most recent research also emphasizes their significant value in the combined analysis with other markers, such as troponin, or with GRACE, SYNTAX, and TIMI scores, which improve risk stratification and diagnosis in ACS patients.

Abstract
Background Platelets may actively participate in inflammation in COPD. Platelet distribution width (PDW), a measure of platelets’ volume heterogeneity, may increase in platelets’ activation. We hypothesized that PDW may be a marker of hypercoagulation, which plays a significant role in conditions associated with worse survival of patients with COPD, eg, acute myocardial infarction and other forms of ischemic heart disease. Methods Retrospective analysis of 79 patients. Variables were compared after grouping patients according to the upper normal limit of PDW, using Welch’s t-tests or Mann–Whitney U, and chi-square tests. Survival in the two groups was compared using the Kaplan–Meier method and Cox proportional hazards regression. Results Ten patients presented values of PDW above 16 fL, which was the upper limit of normality for our laboratory. Compared to patients with normal PDW, they had lower forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of vital capacity (FEF 25–75) – 35% of reference value vs 57% (P=0.003) and peak expiratory flow – 39% vs 54% (P<0.001). The median survival of patients with elevated PDW was 743 days compared to those with normal PDW (1,305 days) (P=0.025). The adjusted HR was 4.59 (95% CI: 1.1, 19.19; P=0.04). Conclusion Our analysis indicates that elevated PDW is associated with reduced survival of patients with COPD. If our data are to be confirmed, PDW may be used as an inexpensive and repeatable prognostic tool in COPD.

Abstract
Background We aimed to determine the association between platelet indices including plateletcrit (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and proteinuria associated with hypertension (HT) as well as the relative power of each to predict proteinuria. Methods The study included 223 patients (68 men and 155 women) with primary HT. PCT, MPV, PDW, and proteinuria levels were measured. The patients were divided into two groups according to proteinuria status based on 24-hr urinary protein excretion: proteinuria (+) group (15 men and 40 women) and proteinuria (-) group (53 men and 115 women). Results The mean and SD of platelet count, PDW, PCT, and MPV were 278.8±49.6×109/L, 13.5±1.8%, 0.31±0.07%, and 11.3±2.6 fL, respectively. The mean platelet count, PCT, MPV, and PDW were significantly higher in the proteinuria (+) group than in the proteinuria (-) group (P<0.05); there were no significant differences in the other blood parameters between the two groups. The platelet count, PCT, MPV, and PDW were independent risk factors predictive of proteinuria according to a stepwise regression analysis of PDW, PCT, and MPV. PCT was the strongest independent predictor of proteinuria. Conclusions The platelet indices PCT, PDW, and MPV were significantly higher in patients with proteinuria than in those without it. Among these three indices, PCT was the strongest predictor of proteinuria.

Abstract
Background: The coronary slow-flow phenomenon (CSFP) is a multifactorial angiographic finding with no established pathogenesis. Objective: To investigate the role of clinical profile and laboratory findings in patients with CSFP. Methods: We prospectively recruited 69 patients with angiographically diagnosed CSFP and compared them with 88 patients with normal coronary flow. Demographic information, comorbidities and laboratory analysis, including complete blood count with differential, lipid profile and serum biochemical analysis, were documented and compared in univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Patients with CSFP were more likely to be male and active smokers. Total cholesterol, triglyceride, hemoglobin and hematocrit, platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width and red cell distribution width (RDW) were all higher in patients with CSFP. In multivariate regression analysis, including smoking, total cholesterol, hematocrit, fasting blood glucose and red cell distribution width, except fasting blood glucose, all variables were independently associated with CSFP. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed a cut-off point of 13.05% for RDW with a sensitivity of 74.6% and a specificity of 77.3% (p<0.001, AUC = 0.802) A cut-off value of 11.35% for PDW had a 89.9% sensitivity and 98.9% specificity for the prediction of CSFP (p<0.001, AUC = 0.970) Conclusion: The changes of circulating blood cell components in patients with CSFP may be indicative of underlying inflammation and endothelial dysfunction that should be investigated in experimental studies.

Abstract
AIM We investigated the association between platelet indices and the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). METHODS A total of 484 consecutive patients who were routinely referred to coronary angiography for STEMI and 81 age- and gender-matched patients with normal coronary arteries were included in the present study. We analyzed the relation between the platelet distribution width (PDW) and the angiographic severity of CAD. The SYNTAX score was used for assessing the severity of coronary atherosclerosis. RESULTS The mean platelet volume (MPV), the plateletcrit (PCT) and the neutrophil levels were significantly higher in the STEMI group than in the control group. Patients with an elevated SYNTAX score (>32) had higher PDW values. The levels of plateletcrit and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were lower in the high SYNTAX score group compared to the moderate-to-low SYNTAX score group. The PDW was positively correlated with age (r = 0.128, p=0.004) and SYNTAX score (r = 0.209, p<0.001). There was a mild, significant inverse association between the PDW level and the eGFR (r = -0.101, p=0.049), the mean platelet volume (MPV) (r = -290, p<0.001) and the PCT (r = -345, p<001). Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, we found that age (OR = 1.046, 95% CI 1.013-1.079, p=0.005), diabetes (OR = 4.779, 95% CI 2.339-9.767, p<0.001) and PDW (OR = 1.229, 95% CI 1.072-1409, p=0.003) were independent correlates of high SYNTAX score. CONCLUSION Platelet distribution width, an inexpensive and easily measurable laboratory variable, is independently associated with high SYNTAX score.
