Polysensoriality and Aesthetics: The Lived Sensory Experiences of Adults with Mental Illness

Background. Research in neuroscience shows that adults with schizophrenia or related psychotic disorders experience atypical sensory processing (e.g., deficits in sensory gating and mismatch negativity). Despite significant evidence proving these biomarkers are common among adults with serious mental illness, it is unclear how their sensory experiences impact their occupations in daily life (i.e., real-world implications of atypical sensory processing). Purpose. To explore how the lived sensory experiences of adults with psychotic disorders affect their occupations. Method. We used Walking with Video, photo-elicitation, and semi-structured interviews to study how the lived sensory experiences of adults with psychotic disorders (N  =  6) relate to their occupations. Informed by a phenomenological perspective, we analysed data from semistructured interviews, and undertook analyses through iterative rounds of coding to develop themes and two cycles of group reflective practices to identify researcher biases and assumptions. Findings. Analyses revealed the following themes: polysensoriality, embodied aesthetics of everyday life, habits of sensing and sensory anchors, and active sensory beings. Implications. In clinical contexts, occupational therapists should carefully consider the situatedness of sensory experiences while avoiding assumptions that sensory preferences and aversions mechanistically generalize across contexts and occupations.

A descriptive video analysis of interactions during inpatient brain injury rehabilitation groups

Introduction

An advantage of using groups in rehabilitation is the opportunity for peer learning and support. This study aimed to describe and understand the nature of interactions occurring in inpatient occupational therapy brain injury rehabilitation groups, using video-recorded group interactions, to inform recommendations for group facilitation.

Method

Video recordings of four occupational therapy rehabilitation groups were taken. Twelve adults with brain injury who participated in the groups and four facilitators consented to the study. The data were analysed using a qualitative descriptive approach.

Results

Interactions were predominantly facilitated by facilitators and shaped by the nature of the group activities. Facilitators used a number of strategies to encourage interaction including knowledge of group participants, activity choice and physical positioning of group members.

Conclusion

Group facilitators utilise a number of strategies to encourage peer interactions. However, during structured activity-based rehabilitation groups, participants with a brain injury may focus predominantly on achieving the goal of the group rather than initiating peer interactions.

Modern Aspects of Psychophysiological Selection of Employees for High-risk Work

In Ukraine, as in the rest of the world, the problem of the impact of occupational hazards and peculiarities of the labor process on higher nervous activity and general health of the working contingent remains relevant. The issue of fitness to work of employees, especially of dangerous, extreme professions is due to the extraordinary financial and economic, medical, social and psychological urgency of the problem. In the aspect of psychological and psychophysiological diagnosis, a large number of methodological approaches have been developed. Thorough psychophysiological diagnosis is the basis for predicting the effectiveness of employees and psychophysiological characteristics of the labor process. Thus, a wide variety of developed methodological approaches in modern conditions allows for effective psychophysiological examination of a particular field of activity of employees involved in high-risk work and opens further prospects for improving the psychophysiological support of professional activities of these persons. There is a need for theoretical substantiation and development of measures to improve the professional psychophysiological selection of industrial employees to perform high-risk work with further implementation and evaluation of medical, social and economic efficiency.

Implementation of video modeling in the occupational therapy intervention process for children and adolescents with special needs: A scoping review

This scoping review explores the implementation of video modeling (VM) by occupational therapists during the intervention process for children and adolescents with special needs. Four primary electronic databases were used to conduct the scoping review: PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and Proquest (Nursing and Allied Health). Research methodologies by Arksey and O'Malley were used as a framework to perform the review process. From the review, two themes emerged: (1) implementing VM by occupational therapists during the intervention process can successfully improve a client's desired skills; (2) VM can be applied through several types of technologies. The findings support occupational therapists' use of VM during interventions to positively enhance and promote desired skills among children and adolescents with special needs. Also, it can be incorporated into technological devices to suit a client's specific needs.

Transcending the individual: The promise and potential of collectivist approaches in occupational therapy

BACKGROUND

In a globalised world, with injustices and inequities, occupational therapists have a moral and ethical obligation to use their knowledge and skills to work at a collective level with groups, communities, and populations rather than focus solely on individualistic approaches.

OBJECTIVES

To review the literature exploring the question: What do occupational therapists do in their everyday practice that could be characterised as having a collectivist orientation?

METHOD

A scoping review with searches on Web of Science, Scopus and CINAHL databases with the keywords 'occupational therapy' AND collectiv*.

RESULTS

161 articles were found and after screening of abstracts and/or full text, 19 were included. Articles were published in English (13) and Portuguese (6), in 12 different journals and one book, from 1988 to 2018. They were categorised as focussing on: social welfare - collectivism (n = 2); collective occupations (n = 11); and collective oriented practices (n = 6).

CONCLUSION

A clear definition of collectivist approaches in occupational therapy practice was not found. What was evident, however, was a focus on experiential accounts of working with groups of people and the methods and processes utilised. It is argued that occupational therapy needs to further develop knowledge and practices aimed at injustices grounded in a collectivist epistemology.

The Patient's Situation During Interhospital Intensive Care Unit-to-Unit Transfers: A Hermeneutical Observational Study

Interhospital intensive care unit-to-unit transfers are an increasing phenomenon, earlier mainly studied from a patient safety perspective. Using data from video recordings and participant observations, the aim was to explore and interpret the observed nature of the patient's situation during interhospital intensive care unit-to-unit transfers. Data collection from eight transfers resulted in over 7 hours of video material and field notes. Using a hermeneutical approach, three themes emerged: being visible and invisible; being in a constantly changing space; and being a fettered body in constant motion. The patient's situation can be viewed as an involuntary journey, one where the patient exists in a constantly changing space drifting in and out of the health personnel's attention and where movements from the journey become part of the patient's body. Interhospital transfers of vulnerable patients emerge as a complex task, challenging the health personnel's ability to maintain a caring atmosphere around these patients.

Beyond Words: Using Qualitative Video Methods for Researching Occupation With Young Children

Researching with children is fundamental for furthering our understanding of children's occupational worlds. Furthermore, researching occupation from a transactional perspective is important for gaining a deeper understanding. However historically, most approaches to researching with children do not capture the transactional nature of occupation. The use of video methods in qualitative research is proposed as a potential solution. This article illustrates how videography can be used as an effective, inclusive qualitative research method, and uses a study of infant play occupation to illuminate video techniques. Drawing on a longitudinal study with five infants and their families, methodological challenges are presented. We discuss key considerations in data generation and analysis when utilizing videography and outline insights gained regarding infant occupational development and meaning-making in the physical environment. Video methods are an effective means of researching from a transactional perspective and have potential to strengthen occupation-centered research particularly with infants.

Habits of the Sensory System and Mental Health: Understanding Sensory Dissonance

OBJECTIVE

In occupational therapy, research has studied sensory function predominantly in relation to sensory disorders. There is a gap in the literature exploring how sensory experiences affect mental health. This study sought to provide a phenomenological understanding of how people relate experiences of sensory dissonance to their mental health.

METHOD

Ten immigrants from Latin America participated in semistructured interviews and video observations of their occupational behavior.

RESULTS

Participants' experiences of sensory dissonance provoked negative mental states and distress. Participants reported poor mental health following sensory experiences that were incongruent with their habits of sensing. They also intentionally used sensory anchors to induce positive mental states and connect with past occupational experiences.

CONCLUSION

Occupational therapy practitioners should be mindful of how sensory environments can facilitate or impede intervention. Practitioners are encouraged to harness clients' sensory habits and use sensory anchors as a form of sensory scaffolding to facilitate therapeutic gains.

Extending Beyond Qualitative Interviewing to Illuminate the Tacit Nature of Everyday Occupation

The study of human occupation requires a variety of methods to fully elucidate its complex, multifaceted nature. Although qualitative approaches have commonly been used within occupational therapy and occupational science, we contend that such qualitative research must extend beyond the sole use of interviews. Drawing on qualitative methodological literature, we discuss the limits of interview methods and outline other methods, particularly visual methods, as productive means to enhance qualitative research. We then provide an overview of our critical ethnographic study that used narrative, visual, and observational methods to explore the occupational transitions experienced by immigrants to Canada. We describe our use of occupational mapping and participatory occupation methods and the contributions of these combined methods. We conclude that adopting a variety of methods can enable a deeper understanding of the tacit nature of everyday occupation, and is key to advancing knowledge regarding occupation and to informing occupational therapy practice.
