Abstract
AIM The current study aims to investigate the effect of Executive Functions (EFs) on Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in a cohort of children with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS) and to identify possible factors that impact HRQoL specifically related to epilepsy-related variables and EFs skills. MATERIAL AND METHOD The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 Generic Core Scales (PedsQL) and The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF-2 and BRIEF-P) were completed by the parents of 129 patients with SeLECTS. Demographic variables and epilepsy-related variables were collected. RESULTS Our sample performed in the average range across all the subscales and summary scores of the PedsQL and performed in the normal range of the BRIEF questionnaire. We observed that a lower functioning in EFs was associated with lower overall HRQoL scores. We explored the relationship between epilepsy characteristics and scores on the PedsQL. We found that the use of antiseizure medications (ASMs), longer duration of the treatment, and a higher seizure frequency were associated with a lower HRQoL. Moreover, we observed that executive dysfunction was a significant predictor of reduced HRQoL. CONCLUSION Our results suggest the importance of the identification of patients with SeLECTS with a high level of risk for a poor HRQoL. We may now add executive dysfunction to the list of known risk factors for poor HRQoL in children with SeLECTS, along with such factors as seizure frequency, recent seizures, use of ASMs and longer duration of therapy. The early identification of children with SeLECTS at risk of a poor HRQoL could allow the activation of adequate interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children with epilepsy (CWE) is multifactorial and can be affected not only by epilepsy-specific variables but also co-occurring conditions such as sleep disturbances, autism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While highly prevalent in CWE, these conditions are underdiagnosed despite having a significant impact on HRQOL. Sleep problems have a complex relationship with epilepsy and neurodevelopmental characteristics. However, little is known about how these issues interact and contribute to HRQOL. OBJECTIVES The current study aims to explore the relationship between sleep and neurodevelopmental characteristics on HRQOL in CWE. METHODS 36 CWE aged 4-16 years old were recruited from two hospitals and asked to wear an actiwatch for a period of 14 days and caregivers completed a series of questionnaires assessing co-occurrences and epilepsy-specific variables. RESULTS A high proportion of CWE (78.13%) presented significant sleep problems. Informant-reported sleep problems were significantly predictive of HRQOL above seizure severity and the number of antiseizure medications. Interestingly, informant-reported sleep problems were no longer significantly predictive of HRQOL when neurodevelopmental characteristics were considered, indicating a possible mediating effect. Similarly, actigraphy-defined sleep (variability in sleep onset latency) displayed a similar effect but only for ADHD characteristics, whereas autistic characteristics and variability in sleep onset latency continued to exert an individual effect on HRQOL. CONCLUSION These data from our study shed light on the complicated relationship between sleep, neurodevelopmental characteristics and epilepsy. Findings suggest that the impact of sleep on HRQOL in CWE is possibly mediated by neurodevelopmental characteristics. Furthermore, the impact this triangular relationship exerts on HRQOL is dependent on the type of tool used to measure sleep. These findings highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to epilepsy management.

Abstract
AbstractThe objective of this study was to determine the quality-of-life (QoL) among children with epilepsy in comparison with a healthy control group. Participants included mothers of 206 children with epilepsy and of 211 healthy controls. The QoL was measured via cross-cultural adaptation of the Quality-of-Life in Children with Epilepsy Questionnaire, which was also modified for the control group. The mean (standard deviation) overall QoL score of children with epilepsy was lower than that of the healthy control group at: 74.3 (8.2) versus 87.9 (6.6), p < 0.001. In addition, all seven dimensions of QoL were lower among children with epilepsy compared with that of the healthy control group. The health-related QoL of children with epilepsy was lower than that of the healthy control group. Children experiencing seizures more frequently, experiencing side effects from antiepileptic drugs, having a history of hospitalization, and having poor school performance displayed lower scores in QoL, which may highlight the impact of the severity of the disease and proper management of seizures on the quality-of-life in children with epilepsy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Caring for children with chronic diseases, caregivers have to manage their child's daily life to prevent complications and improve their quality of life. This study investigated family management of children with chronic diseases, quality of life of children, and correlation between family management of caregivers and quality of life of children as perceived by the caregivers. PATIENTS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study collected data from 200 pairs of caregivers and children with asthma, anemia, and thalassemia aged 5 to 12 years after receiving treatment and follow-up in the pediatric outpatient department of the tertiary hospital, June to November 2020. Research instruments comprised a Family Management Measure (FaMM) and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL 4.0). Data were analyzed using descriptive and Spearman rank correlation coefficient statistics. RESULTS The caregivers of children obtained a mean score on family management of 166.88 (S.D.= 11.32). The quality of life of children with chronic illness had a mean score of 66.59 (S.D.= 18.63). Correlation analysis revealed that easy family management of the caregivers had a positive correlation with the quality of life of children with chronic diseases. On the contrary, difficulty in family management negatively correlated with the quality of life of the children. CONCLUSION Most caregivers could have easy family management in caring for the children. In summary, easy family management will allow children with chronic illness to receive decent care from their caregivers, contributing to improved quality of life.

Abstract
While the benefits of regular participation in physical activity in children and young people are clear, misconceptions have developed about the possible negative effects and potential complications of exercise on long-term conditions such as epilepsy, asthma and diabetes. Over the last decade evidence has emerged supporting the positive impact that physical activity has on long-term conditions. Previous concerns were raised about the risks of hypoglycaemia in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) thus limiting participation in sports. Importantly, physical activity improves the metabolic profile, bone mineral density, cardiorespiratory fitness and insulin sensitivity while lowering mortality risk in children with T1DM. Children with asthma were prevented from doing exercise due to concerns about precipitating an acute asthmatic episode. To the contrary, physical activity interventions have consistently shown an increase in cardiovascular fitness, physical capacity, asthma-free days and quality of life in childhood asthmatics. Children with epilepsy are often excluded from sports due to concerns relating to increased seizure frequency, yet evidence suggests that this is not the case. The evidence supporting physical activity in childhood survivors of cancer is growing but still primarily confined to patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Participation in sports and physical activity also reduces mental health problems developing in adolescence. While further research is required to investigate benefits of physical activity on specific aspects of long-term conditions in children, in general this group should be advised to increase participation in sports and exercise as a means of improving long-term physical and mental health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Children with epilepsy report lower health-related quality of life (QOL) compared with healthy children and those with other chronic disorders. This study piloted the recently published Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Epilepsy Module (PedsQL-EM) in an ambulatory setting and studied epilepsy-related factors contributing to QOL in children with epilepsy. METHODS Children with epilepsy aged 8-18 years who were ambulant and verbal were recruited from pediatric neurology clinics. Children and their caregivers completed age-appropriate versions of the PedsQL-EM (8-12 or 13-18 years) in the clinic waiting area. Treating neurologists completed medical questionnaires about their patients' epilepsy. RESULTS We collected 151 parent-report and 127 self-report PedsQL-EMs. Administration time was 5-10 min with some children receiving assistance from the researcher. Mean age of children was 12.9+/-3.0, with 77 females (51%). Parents reported lower mean QOL scores across all subdomains compared with their children. Parents reported significantly lower QOL for children with earlier age at epilepsy onset, longer epilepsy duration, presence of seizures during the last month, more severe epilepsy, increased number of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), and cognitive comorbidity. The same factors impacted on child self-reporting, but with more variability across subdomains. CONCLUSIONS The PedsQL-EM is an epilepsy-specific measure of QOL that is quick and easy to administer and is sensitive to the clinical factors reported to impact on QOL in pediatric epilepsy.

Abstract
Objective
Medical factors that put adolescents and young adults (AYA) with epilepsy at risk for poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL) are well-established. Less known is whether medical risk is associated with decreases in global psychological well-being and how self-management self-efficacy might contribute to resilience. The current study seeks to (a) examine the relationship between medical risk and both HRQOL and psychological well-being in AYA with epilepsy and (b) investigate the potential moderating role of self-management self-efficacy.
Methods
A sample of 180 AYA with epilepsy, aged 13–24 years, was recruited from clinic and community settings and completed questionnaires. A medical risk gradient composed of seizure frequency, antiepileptic drugs, and other health problems was created. HRQOL, psychological well-being, and self-management self-efficacy were assessed.
Results
Medical risk was negatively associated with HRQOL, such that youth with greater risk scores reported lower HRQOL (r = −0.35, p < .01). However, there was no significant relationship between medical risk and psychological well-being (r = −0.08, p = .31). Self-efficacy was positively correlated with HRQOL and well-being (r = 0.50, p < .01; r = 0.48, p < .01). A moderation effect was detected, such that the positive effect of self-efficacy on HRQOL differed across medical risk levels.
Implications
Cultivating psychological strengths, as opposed to solely addressing medical problems, may be a promising intervention target when treating AYA with epilepsy, including those navigating healthcare transitions. Self-efficacy predicted HRQOL at most levels of risk, suggesting an important modifiable intrinsic factor that may promote resilience.

Abstract
Epilepsy is a neurologic disorder consisting of recurrent spontaneous seizures. Antiepileptic drugs administration is the most commonly used therapeutic strategy in the management of epilepsy. However, 20-30% of epilepsy patients have seizure episodes that are not controlled by these medicines (drug-resistant epilepsy). The management of drug-resistant epilepsy, especially in the children, is challenging and can cause economic and social problems, and lower the patients' quality of life, cognition, and mood. Several therapeutic approaches for drug-resistant epilepsy are available including surgical methods, neurostimulation treatments, and diet therapies which lead to diminishing the epileptic seizures. An increasing number of novel and potential therapeutic approaches such as gene therapy, gene editing, cell therapy, exosome therapy, and molecular network targeting have also been explored. The present study is aimed to review these current and emerging therapeutic approaches for drug-resistant epilepsy.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the possible relationship between parenting stress and quality of life of children with epilepsy together with the mediating effects of family management styles on this relationship. DESIGN AND METHODS We conducted a descriptive and exploratory study using data of participants were 93 parents with an epileptic child. Instruments were self-reported questionnaires including the Korean version of the Quality of Life (QOL) in Childhood Epilepsy Questionnaire (K-QOLCE), the Korean version of the Parenting Stress Index (PSI), and the Korean version of the Family Management Measure (FaMM). Six domains of FaMM were clustered into two domains: easy or difficult family management styles. Descriptive and Pearson correlation path analyses were used to analyze the data. RESULTS The direct effects of PSI on QOL were not significant (b = -0.21, t = -0.94, p = .349). Indirect effects of PSI through easy family management styles on QOL were significant (b = -0.33, 95% CI = [-0.77, -0.05]). Additionally, two other effects (i.e., indirect effects through difficult family management styles and direct effects) were non-significant. All effects of PSI on QOL were fully mediated through easy family management styles. CONCLUSION Easy family management styles are the most important factor in predicting QOL in childhood epilepsy patients. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Comprehensive intervention programs are recommended for parents and families of epileptic children to promote positive perceptions of the child's life and to increase parental management ability of the child's condition and parental mutuality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with epilepsy (CWE) are at risk of impaired quality of life (QOL), and achieving a good QOL is an important treatment goal among CWE. To date, there are no published multiethnic QOL studies in Asia. Our study aimed to: i) investigate the QOL of multiethnic CWE in Malaysia as reported by both the child and parent; ii) determine the level of agreement between child-self report and parent-proxy report QOL; and iii) explore potential correlates of sociodemographic, epilepsy characteristics, and family functioning with QOL in CWE. METHODS Cross-sectional study of all CWE aged 8-18years old with at least 6months' duration of epilepsy, minimum reading level of primary school education Year 1, and attending mainstream education. Quality of life was measured using the parent-proxy and child self-report of Quality of Life Measurement for Children with Epilepsy (CHEQOL-25) questionnaire. Total and subscale CHEQOL-25 scores were obtained. The levels of parent-child agreement were determined using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Family functioning was assessed using the General functioning subscale (GF-12). RESULTS A total of 115 CWE and their parents participated in the study. In general, Malaysian parents rated children's total CHEQOL-25 scores poorer than the children themselves [mean total parent score: 68.56 (SD: 10.86); mean total child score: 71.82 (SD: 9.55)]. Agreement between child and parent on the CHEQOL-25 was poor to moderate (ICC ranged from 0.31-0.54), with greatest discordance in the epilepsy secrecy domain (ICC=0.31, p=0.026). Parent and child were more likely to agree on more external domains: intrapersonal/social (ICC=0.54, p<0.001) and interpersonal/emotional (ICC=0.50, p<0.001). Malay ethnicity, focal seizure and high seizure frequency (≥1 seizure per month) were associated with lower CHEQOL-25 scores. There was a significant but weak correlation between GF-12 and parent-proxy CHEQOL-25 Total Scores (r=-0.186, p=0.046). CONCLUSION Our results emphasize the importance to have the child's perspective of their QOL as the level of agreement between the parent and child reported scores were poor to moderate. Malaysian CWE of Malay ethnicity, those with focal seizures or high seizure frequency are at risk of poorer QOL.

Abstract
Background Elevated rates of affective disturbance in children with benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BCECTS) have been reported. However, it remains unclear how anxiety and depression are related to epilepsy, and it is unknown whether these mood disorders are influenced by the use of antiepileptic drugs. In the present report, we performed a prospective study designed to evaluate affective disorders (anxiety and depression) without the bias of antiepileptic drug treatment in 89 children with BCECTS, based on self-reporting. Furthermore, we sought to determine whether clinical factors, such as age, disease course, seizure frequency, and spike wave index (SWI), were related to the psychological profiles. Methods Patients with BCECTS (n = 89) and healthy matched controls (n = 75) were included in this study. The Depression Self-Rating Scale for Children (DSRSC) and the Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) were completed by the children. Results None of the children met criteria for clinically significant anxiety or depression. However, the children with BCECTS had significantly higher depression and anxiety scores compared with children in the control group. We found no significant differences in depression or anxiety between the left, right, and bilateral lobe groups. The DSRSC scores were similar between the children with partial seizures and those with secondarily generalized seizures. Similarly, there were no significant differences in the SCARED scores between these two groups. However, the DSRSC and SCARED scores were positively correlated with age, seizure frequency, SWI, and disease course. Conclusions The children with BCECTS had an increased likelihood of depression and anxiety, and these higher rates were unrelated to seizure type or epileptic focus, but were positively correlated with age, seizure frequency, SWI, and disease course.

Abstract
Quality of life (QoL) plays a significant role in the treatment of dogs with idiopathic epilepsy (IE), yet is so far understudied. This study describes the outcome evaluation of an online questionnaire based on the carer's perception focusing on 62 QoL questions in 159 dogs with IE. Results showed that seizure frequency, but not seizure severity or presence of cluster seizures, was significantly associated with carer-perceived dog's QoL. Dogs receiving third-line antiepileptic drugs had a significantly lower perceived QoL than those that did not. Generalised linear mixed model analysis demonstrated that severity of the side effects sleeping more and ataxia were significantly associated with carer-perceived dog's QoL, with higher severities predicting lower QoL scores. The degree of carer acceptability of seizure frequency and severity was significantly associated with the dog's reported seizure frequency and severity. Moreover, there was a significant association between IE-related QoL changes of the dog and the carer, with reductions in perceived canine QoL scores associated with reductions in carer QoL, and vice versa. In conclusion, aspects of canine IE can affect both the carer and their dog's QoL. This has implications for the management and requires consideration when treatment options and outcomes are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify two-year trajectories of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among children with newly diagnosed epilepsy, and evaluate key predictors of HRQOL trajectories. METHODS This study is part of a prospective study of adherence and HRQOL outcomes in children with epilepsy. Caregivers completed an HRQOL questionnaire at one month post diagnosis and every three months thereafter for two years. Chart review and additional questionnaires were used to collect medical variables and seizure outcomes. RESULTS Participants included 120 children with epilepsy and their caregiver. Unique trajectories for overall HRQOL and PedsQL™ subscales were identified and were predominantly stable. A total side effects score emerged as a consistent predictor of all HRQOL domains. Other variables (i.e., socioeconomic status, seizures, internalizing and externalizing problems) uniquely predicted HRQOL domains. CONCLUSIONS Medical and psychosocial interventions should be implemented soon after treatment initiation to target modifiable factors (e.g., side effects, anxiety symptoms), which could improve HRQOL.
