Curved Versus Flat Monitors: Interactive Effects of Display Curvature Radius and Display Size on Visual Search Performance and Visual Fatigue

User experience with ultrawide curved displays: A mixed methods analysis

Due to the trend of replacing dual displays with ultrawide (UW) curved displays, we used a mixed methods analysis to investigate the user experience with UW curved displays. We conducted an experimental laboratory study that quantified user self-selected positions for three displays - 24 in. flat panel, and 34 in. and 40 in. UW curved displays. Participants were first provided with a familiarization protocol, and they then positioned the display. The self-selected UW display viewing distances were within current recommendations; however, viewing distance increased with display size, potentially challenging small work surface depths and may have been in response to feeling "overwhelmed" by larger displays. Head twist range of motion increased with display width. While all displays were within recommendations, participants commented that less head twisting was a factor in choosing the 34 in. over the 40 in. display. Practitioners should assess potential workstation limitations and the potential impact on neck twist angles when installing ultrawide displays.

Exploring Users Pointing Performance on Large Displays with Different Curvatures in Virtual Reality

Large curved displays inside Virtual Reality environments are becoming popular for visualizing high-resolution content during analytical tasks, gaming or entertainment. Prior research showed that such displays provide a wide field of view and offer users a high level of immersion. However, little is known about users' performance (e.g., pointing speed and accuracy) on them. We explore users' pointing performance on large virtual curved displays. We investigate standard pointing factors (e.g., target width and amplitude) in combination with relevant curve-related factors, namely display curvature and both linear and angular measures. Our results show that the less curved the display, the higher the performance, i.e., faster movement time. This result holds for pointing tasks controlled via their visual properties (linear widths and amplitudes) or their motor properties (angular widths and amplitudes). Additionally, display curvatures significantly affect the error rate for both linear and angular conditions. Furthermore, we observe that curved displays perform better or similar to flat displays based on throughput analysis. Finally, we discuss our results and provide suggestions regarding pointing tasks on large curved displays in VR.

A Study on the Design of Vision Protection Products Based on Children’s Visual Fatigue under Online Learning Scenarios

The rate of myopia in children is increasing rapidly under online learning scenarios. One of the important reasons for this is incorrect reading and writing posture. Three screen view parameters (viewing angle, viewing height, and viewing distance) are selected as significant influencing factors and blink rating is used as a sign of visual fatigue through literature analysis to study the influence factors of myopia in children, and their correlation. Children’s visual fatigue is evaluated by subjective evaluation and is recording using an eye tracker for changes in the three factors through online learning scenario simulation experiment. An optimal regression model is constructed that illustrates the relationship between the three variables and the visual fatigue levels. The aim of this study is to confirm the quantitative relationship between the screen view parameters and visual fatigue, and to design a child vision protection product on this basis. The test results show there is a linear positive correlation between the viewing angle, viewing height, and viewing distance. A vision protection device has been designed based on this model and was verified through function prototype testing. The result of this study quantified the relationship among screen view parameters and children’s visual fatigue, which provides a theoretical basis for the design of a children’s visual protection device.
