Preparation and characterization of cyclopolymerizable resin formulations

Analysis of residual stress in the resin of metal-resin adhesion structures by scanning acoustic microscopy

The residual stress caused by polymerization shrinkage and thermal contraction of a heat-curing resin containing 4-META on a metal-resin structure was measured by a scanning acoustic microscope. The tensile residual stress in the resin occurred within 70 µm of the adhesion interface with a flat plate specimen. The maximum tensile stress was about 58 MPa at the interface. On a metal plate specimen with retention holes, ring-like cracks in the resin occurred around the retention holes with the adhesive specimen and many linear cracks occurred in the resin vertical to the longitudinal direction of the metal frame with the non-adhesive specimens. There was tensile residual stress on the resin surface at the center of the retention holes of the adhesion specimen, indicating that the stress in the specimen with surface treatment for adhesion was higher than in that without surface treatment.

Alternatives in polymerization contraction stress management

Polymerization contraction stress of dental composites is often associated with marginal and interfacial failure of bonded restorations. The magnitude of the stress depends on the composite's composition (filler content and matrix composition) and its ability to flow before gelation, which is related to the cavity configuration and curing characteristics of the composite. This article reviews the variations found among studies regarding the contraction stress testing method, contraction stress values of current composites, and discusses the validity of contraction stress studies in relation to results from microleakage tests. The effect of lower curing rates and alternative curing routines on contraction stress values is also discussed, as well as the use of low elastic modulus liners. Moreover, studies with experimental Bis-GMA-based composites and recent developments in low-shrinkage monomers are described.

Control of polymerization shrinkage and stress in nanogel-modified monomer and composite materials

OBJECTIVES

This study demonstrates the effects of nano-scale prepolymer particles as additives to model dental monomer and composite formulations.

METHODS

Discrete nanogel particles were prepared by solution photopolymerization of isobornyl methacrylate and urethane dimethacrylate in the presence of a chain transfer agent, which also provided a means to attach reactive groups to the prepolymer. Nanogel was added to triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) in increments between 5 and 40 wt% with resin viscosity, reaction kinetics, shrinkage, mechanical properties, stress and optical properties evaluated. Maximum loading of barium glass filler was determined as a function of nanogel content and composites with varied nanogel content but uniform filler loading were compared in terms of consistency, conversion, shrinkage and mechanical properties.

RESULTS

High conversion, high molecular weight internally crosslinked and cyclized nanogel prepolymer was efficiently prepared and redispersed into TEGDMA with an exponential rise in viscosity accompanying nanogel content. Nanogel addition at any level produced no deleterious effects on reaction kinetics, conversion or mechanical properties, as long as reactive nanogels were used. A reduction in polymerization shrinkage and stress was achieved in proportion to nanogel content. Even at high nanogel concentrations, the maximum loading of glass filler was only marginally reduced relative to the control and high strength composite materials with low shrinkage were obtained.

SIGNIFICANCE

The use of reactive nanogels offers a versatile platform from which resin and composite handling properties can be adjusted while the polymerization shrinkage and stress development that challenge the adhesive bonding of dental restoratives are controllably reduced.

Direct posterior restorations: clinical results and new developments

The longevity of dental restorations is dependent on many different factors, including those related to materials, the dentist, and the patient. The main reasons for restoration failure are secondary caries, fracture of the bulk of the restoration or of the tooth, and marginal deficiencies and wear. The importance of direct-placement, aesthetic, tooth-colored restorative materials is still increasing. Amalgam restorations are being replaced because of alleged adverse health effects and inferior aesthetic appearance. All alternative restorative materials and procedures, however, have certain limitations. Direct composite restorations require a time-consuming and more costly treatment procedure and are actually only indicated for patients with excellent oral hygiene. Glass ionomers can be considered only as long-term provisional restorations in stress-bearing posterior cavities. Future treatment regimens that are made possible by the development of sophisticated preparation techniques, improved dentin bonding agents, and resin-based restorative materials will result in the therapy of more small-sized lesions rather than large restorations. The importance of indirect inlay techniques will shift more and more toward the direct restoratives. As the cavities become smaller, it is to be expected that the use of improved direct restorative materials will provide excellent longevity even in stress-bearing situations.

Primary cyclization in the polymerization of bis-GMA and TEGDMA: a modeling approach to understanding the cure of dental resins

An optimal dental restorative polymeric material would have a homogeneous cross-linking density giving it consistent mechanical strength throughout the material. When multifunctional monomers are polymerized, a pendant double bond can react intramolecularly with the radical on its propagating chain to form a loop, which results in a primary cyclization reaction. Primary cyclization does not contribute to overall network structure, causes microgel formation, and leads to heterogeneity in the polymer. Knowledge of how cure conditions control the degree of primary cyclization and cross-linking in the polymer is important in developing better dental materials. To gain more understanding about the evolving polymer network, the photopolymerization of a typical dental resin (75/25 wt% bis-GMA/TEGDMA) is modeled using a first principals approach. The overall polymerization rate behavior of 75/25 wt% bis-GMA/TEGDMA is predicted using experimentally obtained propagation and termination kinetic rate constants. The effect of chain stiffness and light intensity on the polymerization kinetics is also explored. Furthermore, the model predicts the extent of cross-linking and primary cyclization in the growing polymer network. At 45% conversion, the fraction of bis-GMA and TEGDMA pendant double bonds created that have cycled is 11 and 33%, respectively. The model shows that using a stiff monomer, like bis-GMA, in dental resins diminishes the extent of cyclization and increases the cross-linking density of the polymer. Therefore, better mechanical properties are obtained than if more flexible monomers were used.

The influence of water storage and C-factor on the dentin-resin composite microtensile bond strength and debond pathway utilizing a filled and unfilled adhesive resin

OBJECTIVE

To test the elastic wall concept utilizing adhesive resins of varying stiffness in a low- and high-C-factor cavity design after short- and long-term water storage.

METHODS

A flat and box-shaped cavity was restored on occlusal dentin with a resin composite using a filled and unfilled adhesive resin from which microtensile specimens with a 0.5mm(2) cross-sectional area were formed. After storage for 30- and 150-days the microtensile bond strength (muTBS) was determined in a Zwick materials testing machine and the subsequent debond pathway was examined under scanning electron microscopy. Fisher's exact test was used to determine differences in joint and substrate failure modes and a Weibull regression model with gamma frailties was used to test for differences between failure distributions. Tests for three-way and two-way interactions were also completed for storage time, C-factor and adhesive. All tests were at 95% confidence levels.

RESULTS

The characteristic strength (TBS degrees ) for the Optibond FL adhesive applied on a flat cavity was 47.57 and 20.90MPa and a box-shaped cavity was 49.26 and 17.49MPa for short- and long-term storage, respectively, while the corresponding TBS degrees for the unfilled Optibond adhesive on the flat cavity design was 36.93 and 32.68MPa and in a box-shaped cavity was 32.84 and 15.46MPa. Combining all groups according to storage time revealed a three-fold increase in the debond pathway including the bottom of the hybrid layer.

SIGNIFICANCE

Evidence suggests that the durability of the bonded joint is threatened by hydrolysis and the most susceptible region is the bottom half of the hybrid layer and in low C-factor cavity designs a more flexible adhesive resin liner was more durable.

Developments in Shrinkage Control of Adhesive Restoratives

PURPOSE

This article reviews material properties and application techniques important in minimizing effects of polymerization shrinkage during the curing reaction of resin composite restorative materials used in adhesive dentistry.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Relevant scientific publications were critically reviewed.

RESULTS

Since it was recognized that shrinkage, which takes place during the curing reaction of resin composite restorative materials, may cause severe problems in adhesive dentistry, considerable effort has been put into reducing the negative effects. The most important problem is the debonding of the restoration-tooth interface, resulting in increased microleakage and, ultimately, in secondary caries. Despite all efforts, there is still no material or general application method that guarantees a leak-proof and durable restoration.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

It is of the utmost importance that dental practitioners know how to deal with the problems related to resin composite shrinkage, so that they can choose the material and procedure most likely to produce a leak-proof and durable restoration, maximizing the potential for clinical success.

Resin composites in dentistry: the monomer systems

The present review outlines the history of monomers used in resin composites, motivates further development, and highlights recent and ongoing research reported in the field of dental monomer systems. The monomer systems of most present-day resin composites are based on BisGMA, developed some 40 years ago, or derivatives of BisGMA. In the remaining resin composites, urethane monomers or oligomers are used as the basis of the monomer system. The main deficiencies of current resin composites are polymerization shrinkage and insufficient wear resistance under high masticatory forces. Both factors are highly influenced by the monomer system, and considerable efforts are being made around the world to reduce or eliminate these undesirable properties. The use of fluoride-releasing monomer systems, some of which are under investigation, has been suggested to mitigate the negative effects of marginal gaps formed in consequence of polymerization shrinkage. The very crux of the problem has also been approached with the synthesis of potentially low-shrinking/non-shrinking resin composites involving ring opening or cyclopolymerizable monomers. By the use of additives with a supposed chain transfer agent function, monomer systems have been formulated that improve the degree of conversion of methacrylate double bonds and mechanical properties. Many promising monomer systems have been devised, the implementation of which may be expected to improve the longevity of resin composite fillings and expand the indications for resin composites.
