Social Support and Life Satisfaction of Ethnic Minority Elderly in China

The Association of Social Support, Depression, and Loneliness with Health-Related Quality of Life in Over 50 Years Adults: Ardakan Cohort Study on Ageing (ACSA)

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Social factors play a crucial role in the quality of life of + 50 adults. This study aimed to investigate the association between social support, depression, and loneliness and the health-related quality of life in + 50 adults of Ardakan.

METHODS

This was a cross-sectional study from the first phase of Ardakan Cohort Study on Aging (ACSA) in 2019. Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL, SF-16), Duke Social Support Index (DSSI), and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D10) were used to assess the variables of interest. Multivariable linear regression was used to model the associated factors with the score of the SF-16 tool in two dimensions; physical (PCS) and mental (MCS).

FINDINGS

A total of 5197 over 50 years individuals included in this study; The mean age was 62.2 ± 7.3 years old, and 52% were male. The mean score for PCS and MCS subscales was 45.6 (95% CI 45.4 to 45.9) and 49.3 (95% CI 49.0 to 49.5), respectively. Adjusted for other variables, having less feeling level of loneliness, and not having depressive symptoms were related to better PCS and MCS scores.

CONCLUSION

The HRQoL for the mental aspect of HRQoL was better than the physical in elder populations. Also, much more focus should be paid to older adults who experience inadequate social support, higher levels of loneliness, and depressive symptoms.

Equity of Elderly Care Facility Allocation in a Multi-Ethnic City under the Aging Background

Societal concerns in ethnic minority areas are global issues. Paying close attention to the equitable allocation of social resources in an aging population is crucial to preserving the cultural diversity and social stability of multi-ethnic countries. This study took a multi-ethnic city-Kunming (KM), China-as an example. The population aging and the comprehensive service level of elderly care institutions at the township (subdistrict) scale were evaluated to discuss the equity of elderly care facility allocation. This study revealed that the overall convenience of elderly care institutions was low. The coupling coordination between the degree of aging and the service level of elderly care institutions in the majority of areas in KM showed poor adaptation. There is spatial differentiation in population aging and an imbalanced distribution of elderly care facilities and relevant service facilities among ethnic minority communities and other areas in KM. We also attempted to provide optimization recommendations for existing problems. This study, on the degree of population aging, the service level of elderly care institutions, and the degree of coupling coordination between them at the township (subdistrict) scale, offers a theoretical foundation for planning elderly care facilities in multi-ethnic cities.

Ethnic Differences in Social Support for Elderly Individuals in Rural Southern China: A Cross-sectional Survey

This study investigated ethnic differences in social support received by the rural elderly population and the effect of ethnic culture, socioeconomic status, and contextual variables on their social support. We determined social support received by 6451 elderly individuals from the rural Guangxi region. Children and spouses represented the most important sources of social support for this population. The Jing and Zhuang, and the Yao and Dong ethnic groups received the maximum and minimum support from the children, respectively. The overall mean social support score was 35.5, and the Jing had the highest and the Maonan had the lowest score. Amid the variation in social support received by different ethnic groups, contextual effects on social support received at the household level are more important than those at the village level among rural elderly individuals. Modern Chinese society should try to narrow the social gap.

Comparing the impact of social support on the life satisfaction of widowed and non-widowed elders

Aim

To compare differences in life satisfaction between widowed and non-widowed elders based on social support.

Methods

A total of 4,560 widowed and 3,655 non-widowed elders were selected from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS-2018). Ordinal logistic regression models and t-tests were performed using SPSS v20.

Results

Both widowed and non-widowed elders had high levels of life satisfaction. Personal characteristics had a significant impact on the life satisfaction of both widowed and non-widowed elders. Endowment insurance, social trust, residence, self-rated health, and living with family had a significant impact on the life satisfaction of widowed elders (p < 0.001), while endowment insurance, government subsidy, and self-rated health significantly impacted non-widowed elders (p < 0.001). Self-rated health had the greatest impact on the life satisfaction of widowed and non-widowed elders (OR = 4.62/4.45), followed by endowment insurance (OR = 1.24/1.32).

Conclusion

Social support can significantly improve life satisfaction, but its impact is heterogeneous. Informal social support plays a greater role in improving the life satisfaction of widowed elders, but formal social support plays a greater role in the life satisfaction of non-widowed elders.

The Effect of Grandparenting on the Depression and Life Satisfaction among Middle-Aged and Older Chinese Adults

Given the prevalence of depressive mental health symptoms among Chinese adults of grandparenting age in recent decades, a better understanding of how depression and life satisfaction among middle-aged and older adults in China are affected by their role as grandparents is called for. This study examines the relationship between grandparenting and depression and life satisfaction among Chinese adults using multilevel regression models based on a multilevel matching dataset formulated from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and the 2018 China City Statistical Yearbook. The results show that for adults who take care of their grandchildren, living with their children can significantly reduce depression. Meanwhile, whereas spending more time taking care of grandchildren can lower life satisfaction, taking care of more grandchildren is related to higher life satisfaction. The findings of this study should help policymakers improve the quality of life of Chinese adults through better-targeted approaches.

Association between Adult Vaccine Hesitancy and Parental Acceptance of Childhood COVID-19 Vaccines: A Web-Based Survey in a Northwestern Region in China

China has initiated the COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 15–17 years since late July 2020. This study aimed to determine the association between adult vaccine hesitancy and parental acceptance of childhood COVID-19 vaccines in a multi-ethnicity area of northwestern China. A web-based investigation was performed with a convenience sampling strategy to recruit the parents aged 20–49 years. In a total of 13,451 valid respondents, 66.1% had received the COVID-19 vaccination, 26.6% were intent to receive, while 7.3% were not intent, with an increasing vaccine hesitancy (p < 0.001). Moreover, vaccination uptake of four common vaccines in their children remained low (29.0% for influenza vaccine, 17.9% for pneumonia vaccine, 10.9% for rotavirus vaccine, 8.0% for Enterovirus-71 vaccine), while overall parental acceptance of childhood COVID-19 vaccines was 50.0% (32.7% for those aged 0–5, 46.6% for 6–10, 73.3% for 11–18; p < 0.001). Vaccination uptake of these four vaccines and parental acceptance of childhood COVID-19 vaccine were negatively associated with adult vaccine hesitancy. In addition, respondents mostly preferred childhood COVID-19 vaccines with weak mild common adverse events (β = 1.993) and no severe adverse events (β = 1.731), demonstrating a positive association with adult vaccine hesitancy. Thus, it warrants specific countermeasures to reduce adult vaccine hesitancy and improve strategies for childhood vaccination.
