Assessing Medical Student Basic Otolaryngology Knowledge: A Multi-Institutional Study

Proximie in the operating theatre: evaluation of a virtual operating platform for medical student education

INTRODUCTION

Medical students often hesitate to enter the operating theatre because of poor visibility of the surgical field and anxiety about the theatre environment. In addition, ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery is underrepresented in many medical curricula. Virtual systems like Proximie offer flexible viewing of surgeries with surgeon commentary, potentially addressing these issues.

METHODS

This descriptive survey study aimed to evaluate the use of Proximie as a surgical education tool for delivering ENT teaching to medical students. Live ENT procedures were recorded at the ENT Department of the John Radcliffe Hospital and shared with interested clinical medical students through Proximie accounts. Students were added to a private group chat to ask questions and provided feedback through structured forms, assessing procedural effectiveness and the platform's technology. Live-streaming and recording of procedures were facilitated by ENT surgeons providing commentary.

RESULTS

Conducted over four virtual theatre days, the study gathered 52 responses: 96% of students rated Proximie's educational value as 4 of 5 or higher; 57% preferred the virtual experience over physical attendance because of its convenience and the improved view of the surgical field. Students valued the live commentary and showed interest in using Proximie for a broader range of surgeries. Suggested improvements included fixing technical issues, better communication of theatre lists, and expanding surgical specialty coverage.

CONCLUSIONS

Proximie has been highly rated by medical students for its effective and engaging approach in the instruction of surgical skills, underscoring its value as an educational tool. Future research is needed to formally assess knowledge acquisition and retention across multiple surgical subspecialties. This work is the first step towards evaluating the utility of virtual operating theatre platforms for medical student education.

ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS OF GP-FM QUESTIONNAIRE REGARDING TRAINING IN THE SPECIALIZATION «OTOLARYNGOLOGY» BOTH AT THE UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE LEVELS

OBJECTIVE

The aim: To research the degree of satisfaction with the training of general practitioners-family medicine (GP-FM) in the specialization "Otorhinolaryngology" in the leading higher educational institutions (HEIs) of Ukraine at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Materials and methods: A questionnaire was conducted of 51 GP-FM doctors.

RESULTS

Results: The duration of otorhinolaryngology training at a medical HEI was indicated by: 49% of respondents about weeks of training, 19.6% - about months. 31.37% received separate training on ENT examination. 56.9% of people were trained in ENT departments. 76.5% of people were not satisfied with the quality of theoretical knowledge, 52.9% of respondents of practical skills at the undergraduate level. 72.6% of doctors not satisfied with the quality of theoretical knowledge, 56.8% of respondents of practical skills at the post-graduate level. 41.2% of respondents received post-graduate training in otorhinolaryngology at the GP-FM specialization cycle, 72.55% of them in a lecture format. 86.3% of people want to deepen their knowledge of otolaryngology and need to understand the etiopathogenetic mechanisms of ENT pathology.

CONCLUSION

Conclusions. The dissonance with the dissatisfaction of the doctors of the GPFM with the quality of the received theoretical knowledge in ENT pathology and the availability of their practical skills was revealed. It is important for GPFM doctors to undergo separate training in ENT examination and pathology with mandatory study and conscious use of etiopathogenetic mechanisms of ENT pathology, especially in inflammatory diseases.

Seven cardinal questions for the patient with ear, nose or throat complaints: Review

The incidence of otolaryngological problems in general medicine practice is highly seasonal and approaches 25% in some months of the year. Accurate diagnosis in the otolaryngology office often requires the use of binocular microscopy, nasal endoscopy, and flexible laryngoscopy, none of which are available in a general medicine office. Therefore, history taking and physical examination techniques available in the non-otolaryngology office are of utmost importance. Using evidence-based history taking for ear, nose, and throat (ENT) problems facilitates dealing with patients who present with otolaryngologic complaints. In this paper, I present 7 cardinal questions to be asked when taking the history of a patient with ENT complaints.

LearnENT: The Development of a Free Open Access Medical Education App in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

OBJECTIVE

To describe the successes and challenges associated with developing an otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) medical education app and website.

DESIGN

From 2010 to 2018, OHNS faculty across Canada contributed to the development of a smartphone app, LearnENT. LearnENT 1.0, was initially launched in 2012 using the Apple iOS 6 platform. The app utilized a novel user interface and interactive features to help learners develop approaches to OHNS clinical problems, review relevant anatomy, history, and physical examination skills. However, the release of iOS 7 necessitated a redesign and relaunch of LearnENT which occurred from 2015 to 2018 to produce the final version of the app, LearnENT 2.0. Through the relaunching process, the LearnENT team redesigned the app's interface, produced a web version of the app, and created a new content management system.

OHNS departments across Canada.

OHNS faculty members, residents, and medical students.

RESULTS

Through this approach, a sustainable, widely accessible, open access OHNS e-Learning resource was developed. Since the relaunch, the LearnENT app has 2728 user accounts and has been widely used across the globe with users in 36 countries outside of North America. LearnENT is currently the official learning app of the Canadian Society of OHNS, has been featured on several different medical education platforms and incorporated into medical school curricula at various institutions.

CONCLUSIONS

The authors successfully created a novel e-Learning resource with the goal of improving OHNS medical education both nationally and internationally.

Do Medical Students Receive Adequate Otolaryngology Training? A Canadian Perspective

Objectives:

Otolaryngology—head and neck surgery (OHNS) training has been found to be underrepresented in medical school curricula. The study aimed to assess (i) students’ clinical OHNS exposure, (ii) their confidence managing OHNS conditions, and (iii) the correlation between OHNS exposure and confidence managing OHNS conditions.

Methods:

Fourth-year medical students at two Canadian Universities completed a survey assessing baseline characteristics, OHNS training, and confidence managing OHNS conditions.

Results:

Of 87 returned surveys, 46 students had no clinical OHNS exposure, while 29 felt there was adequate OHNS exposure. The majority of students lacked confidence recognizing conditions requiring emergent referral. Students with greater OHNS training had greater confidence managing OHNS conditions ( r = 0.267, P = .012).

Conclusion:

The majority of medical students have minimal OHNS exposure. Students with greater OHNS exposure have greater confidence managing OHNS conditions. A review of Canadian medical school curricula is warranted to ensure adequate OHNS exposure.
