Factors Influencing the Answerability and Popularity of a Health-Related Post in the Question-and-Answer Community: Infodemiology Study of Metafilter

BACKGROUND

The web-based health question-and-answer (Q&A) community has become the primary and handy way for people to access health information and knowledge directly.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of our study is to investigate how content-related, context-related, and user-related variables influence the answerability and popularity of health-related posts based on a user-dynamic, social network, and topic-dynamic semantic network, respectively.

METHODS

Full-scale data on health consultations were acquired from the Metafilter Q&A community. These variables were designed in terms of context, content, and contributors. Negative binomial regression models were used to examine the influence of these variables on the favorite and comment counts of a health-related post.

RESULTS

A total of 18,099 post records were collected from a well-known Q&A community. The findings of this study include the following. Content-related variables have a strong impact on both the answerability and popularity of posts. Notably, sentiment values were positively related to favorite counts and negatively associated with comment counts. User-related variables significantly affected the answerability and popularity of posts. Specifically, participation intensity was positively related to comment count and negatively associated with favorite count. Sociability breadth only had a significant impact on comment count. Context-related variables have a more substantial influence on the popularity of posts than on their answerability. The topic diversity variable exhibits an inverse correlation with the comment count while manifesting a positive correlation with the favorite count. Nevertheless, topic intensity has a significant effect only on favorite count.

CONCLUSIONS

The research results not only reveal the factors influencing the answerability and popularity of health-related posts, which can help them obtain high-quality answers more efficiently, but also provide a theoretical basis for platform operators to enhance user engagement within health Q&A communities.

Is this question going to be closed? Answering question closibility on Stack Exchange

Community question answering sites (CQAs) are often flooded with questions that are never answered. To cope with the problem, experienced users of Stack Exchange are now allowed to mark newly posted questions as closed if they are of poor quality. Once closed, a question is no longer eligible to receive answers. However, identifying and closing subpar questions takes time. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to develop a supervised machine learning system that predicts question closibility, the possibility of a newly posted question to be eventually closed. Building on extant research on CQA question quality, the supervised machine learning system uses 17 features that were grouped into four categories, namely, asker features, community features, question content features and textual features. The performance of the developed system was tested on questions posted on Stack Exchange from 11 randomly chosen topics. The classification performance was generally promising and outperformed the baseline. Most of the measures of precision, recall, F1-score and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were above 0.90 irrespective of the topic of questions. By conceptualising question closibility, the article extends previous CQA research on question quality. Unlike previous studies, which were mostly limited to programming-related questions from Stack Overflow, this one empirically tests question closibility on questions from 11 randomly selected topics. The set of features used for classification offers a framework of question closibility that is not only more comprehensive but also more parsimonious compared with prior works.

Characterizing response quantity on academic social Q&A sites: a multidiscipline comparison of linguistic characteristics of questions

Purpose

As academic social Q&A networking websites become more popular, scholars are increasingly using them to meet their information needs by asking academic questions. However, compared with other types of social media, scholars are less active on these sites, resulting in a lower response quantity for some questions. This paper explores the factors that help explain how to ask questions that generate more responses and examines the impact of different disciplines on response quantity.

Design/methodology/approach

The study examines 1,968 questions in five disciplines on the academic social Q&A platform ResearchGate Q&A and explores how the linguistic characteristics of these questions affect the number of responses. It uses a range of methods to statistically analyze the relationship between these linguistic characteristics and the number of responses, and conducts comparisons between disciplines.

Findings

The findings indicate that some linguistic characteristics, such as sadness, positive emotion and second-person pronouns, have a positive effect on response quantity; conversely, a high level of function words and first-person pronouns has a negative effect. However, the impacts of these linguistic characteristics vary across disciplines.

Originality/value

This study provides support for academic social Q&A platforms to assist scholars in asking richer questions that are likely to generate more answers across disciplines, thereby promoting improved academic communication among scholars.
