Effect of eating habits on obesity in adolescents: a study among Chinese college students

Deep neural network for prediction of diet quality among doctors and nurses in North China during the COVID-19 pandemic

Objective

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented pressure on front-line healthcare workers, leading to poor health status, especially diet quality. This study aimed to develop a diet quality prediction model and determine the predictive effects of personality traits, socioeconomic status, lifestyles, and individual and working conditions on diet quality among doctors and nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

A total of 5,013 doctors and nurses from thirty-nine COVID-19 designated hospitals provided valid responses in north China in 2022. Participants' data related to social-demographic characteristics, lifestyles, sleep quality, personality traits, burnout, work-related conflicts, and diet quality were collected with questionnaires. Deep Neural Network (DNN) was applied to develop a diet quality prediction model among doctors and nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Results

The mean score of diet quality was 46.14 ± 15.08; specifically, the mean scores for variety, adequacy, moderation, and overall balance were 14.33 ± 3.65, 17.99 ± 5.73, 9.41 ± 7.33, and 4.41 ± 2.98, respectively. The current study developed a DNN model with a 21-30-28-1 network framework for diet quality prediction. The DNN model achieved high prediction efficacy, and values of R2, MAE, MSE, and RMSE were 0.928, 0.048, 0.004, and 0.065, respectively. Among doctors and nurses in north China, the top five predictors in the diet quality prediction model were BMI, poor sleep quality, work-family conflict, negative emotional eating, and nutrition knowledge.

Conclusion

During the COVID-19 pandemic, poor diet quality is prevalent among doctors and nurses in north China. Machine learning models can provide an automated identification mechanism for the prediction of diet quality. This study suggests that integrated interventions can be a promising approach to improving diet quality among doctors and nurses, particularly weight management, sleep quality improvement, work-family balance, decreased emotional eating, and increased nutrition knowledge.

Dietary diversity and nutritional status of adolescents in Lagos, Nigeria

Background/Objectives

Adolescents in low- and middle-income countries, such as Nigeria, are at increased risk of malnutrition, especially obesity, but there is limited data describing the risk. We assessed this risk by examining the nutritional status and associated factors such as dietary habits, dietary diversity, nutritional knowledge and sociodemographic characteristics among adolescents in Lagos, Nigeria.

Methods

A descriptive cross-sectional study in which 682 adolescents were selected from their communities using a multistage sampling technique. Dietary habits were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire, and dietary diversity was assessed through nonquantifiable 24-h diet recall. Anthropometric measurements were taken to determine nutritional status. Data were analyzed using Epi-Info software version 7.2.3.1. Nutritional status was evaluated using WHO AnthroPlus software. Chi-square was used to test for an association between categorical variables, and P values ≤0.05 were considered statistically significant.

Results

The mean age of the adolescents was 13.6 ± 2.3 years, and only 47.4% of them had good nutritional knowledge. Dietary habits were poor and dietary diversity was low. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 13.4% and 7.0%. Eating dinner, dieting to control weight and daily consumption of foods outside the home were associated with overweight and obesity (P < 0.05).

Conclusions

Dietary habits and diversity of the adolescents were poor, while overweight and obesity were high. Eating dinner and daily consumption of foods outside the home were factors associated with being overweight and obesity. Our findings emphasize the critical need for adolescent nutrition programs that address weight control, especially among those who eat outside their homes.

Relationships of rapid eating with visceral and subcutaneous fat mass and plasma adiponectin concentration

Rapid eating has been demonstrated to be associated with obesity and overweight. However, few studies have characterized the separate relationships of eating speed with visceral and subcutaneous fat mass or circulating adiponectin concentration. We hypothesized that rapid eating is associated with the larger visceral fat tissue (VFT) area and lower adiponectin concentration, but not with the subcutaneous fat tissue (SFT) area in men and women. We performed a cross-sectional study of 712 adults aged 20-86 years (528 men and 184 women; mean ± SD age 59.36 ± 13.61 years). The participants completed a self-reported questionnaire, and underwent anthropometric and laboratory measurements and computed tomographic imaging of the abdomen as a part of annual medical check-ups. Multivariate linear regression analyses revealed that rapid eating was associated with larger visceral (B = 24.74; 95% CI 8.87-40.61, p = 0.002) and subcutaneous fat areas (B = 31.31; 95% CI 12.23-50.38, p = 0.001), lower adiponectin concentration (B =  - 2.92; 95% CI - 4.39- - 1.46, p < 0.001), higher body mass index (BMI) (B = 2.13; 95% CI 1.02-3.25, p < 0.001), and larger waist circumference (B = 5.23; 95% CI 2.16-8.30, p < 0.001) in men, which is partially consistent with the hypothesis. In contrast, rapid eating was found to be associated only with BMI, and not with abdominal adipose area or adiponectin concentration in women, which is a result that is not consistent with the hypothesis. These results suggest that there is no difference in the association of rapid eating with VFT and SFT areas.

Diet self-management: A qualitative study of college students' experiences and perspectives

Background

Overweight and obesity among college students have become an emergent public health concern, which may be effectively prevented by diet self-management (DSM). The purpose of this explorative study was to explore college students' experiences and perspectives on diet self-management (DSM), as well as its influencing factors.

Method

Thirty-three college students were recruited from different universities in China. A qualitative method was used to conduct semi-structured interviews with audio recording to explore their DSM experience and factors that influence DSM. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to develop themes related to DSM.

Result

In the perception of what "good DSM" means, three themes and ten subthemes were identified: characteristics of good DSM (including 5 subthemes: regularity, balanced diet, no picky eating, good eating habits, and scientificity), method of good DSM (including three subthemes: self-control, adjusting, and making plans), and content of good DSM (including two subthemes: nutrition management and safety management). The influencing factors of DSM can be categorized into four levels of themes and 34 subthemes: individual, family, school, and social levels.

Conclusion

The results of this qualitative research highlighted the complexity and multi-dimension of DSM and its influencing factors. Our findings may help to inform diverse and needs-based intervention approaches to improve DSM and promote healthy diet among college students so as to prevent overweight and obesity.

Self-Reported Eating Speed Is Associated with Indicators of Obesity in Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Eating speed (ES) as a dietary behaviour has become a widely discussed factor for weight management and obesity. This study analysed the relationship between ES and anthropometric indicators of obesity, including BMI and waist circumference (WC) in adults. A search conducted of PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct and Scopus found six longitudinal studies and fifteen cross-sectional studies published for further analysis. A quality assessment was performed with the MINORS checklist. Eight studies were included in the meta-analysis and almost all reviewed studies showed that ES was associated with BMI, and non-fast eaters had significantly lower BMI than fast eaters. Therefore, it was assumed that slowing down the ES may be an effective strategy for weight management and lowering obesity risk. There was also an association between WC and ES. Assessment of eating speed can be included in nutrition surveys to analyse obesity risk. More broadly, research is also needed to establish a validated and standardised methodology to determine eating speed. Further research needs to examine the links between eating speed, obesity, ethnicity, sex, food culture and chronic diseases.
