The Ultrastructure of Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma (Case Report)

Breast sarcoma. A clinicopathologic review of 25 cases

Sarcoma of the breast represents less than 1% of primary mammary malignancies; this study reports 25 such cases. The largest group had malignant fibrous histiocytoma (44%), followed by liposarcoma (24%) and fibrosarcoma (16%). Also represented were clear cell sarcoma, neurogenic sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, and alveolar soft part sarcoma (4% each). Of 19 patients treated by wide local excision or simple mastectomy with or without adjuvant radiotherapy, 11 had local recurrence develop, of which one patient died and nine of the remaining ten had metastases develop. Of the remaining eight patients in this group with no local recurrence, only two had metastases develop. Of the six patients treated by radical or Patey mastectomy, none had local recurrence develop, but two died of metastases. No patient had metastases develop more than 5 years after diagnosis. Regional lymph node involvement with tumor was observed in only one patient (with malignant fibrous histiocytoma) despite regional lymphadenopathy in seven. The overall mortality at 5 years is 64% but does not increase thereafter. The authors' findings suggest that failure to establish local control is associated with a poor prognosis and that wide local excision or simple mastectomy does not provide sufficient clearance to be used as first-line treatment. Excision of the axillary lymphatics and adjuvant radiotherapy are unlikely to be beneficial.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of bone. A clinico-pathological and electronmicroscopical study

The clinicopathological and ultrastructural features of seven Malignant Fibrous Histiocytomas reported to the Spanish Registry of Bone Tumors were studied. Two patients were females (20 and 60 years old) and the other five males (15, 37, 67, 38 and 17 years old). The tumors were located in the lower femur (3 cases), upper tibia, upper humerus, rib and iliac bone. The past medical history revealed previous fracture in one patient and previous radiation of the affected bone in another; in a third patient the tumor associated to a bone infarct. Microscopically all tumors presented a storiform pattern composed of neoplastic fibroblasts, histiocytes, and malignant multinucleated giant cells. There was no evidence of osteoid or bone tissue formation by the tumor cells. Five cases were studied with electronmicroscopy; the tumor cells had features of fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, histiocytes and multinucleated histiocytes. Primary and secondary lysosomes, along with lipid vacuoles were common findings in the tumor cells. The value of the electron-microscopy in the differential diagnosis of this tumor is emphasized.

Malignant inflammatory histiocytoma (inflammatory fibrous histiocytoma): report of a patient with four lesions

A patient with four subcutaneous inflammatory fibrous histiocytomas is presented. Three of these tumors developed synchronously. The neoplasms were examined by light and electron microscopy and were composed of well differentiated histiocytes, multinucleated histiocytes, and less differentiated cells. The ultrastructural findings support the histiocytic nature of this particular tumor.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the retroperitoneum and genitourinary tract: a clinicopathological correlation and review of the literature

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma is an uncommon pleomorphic tumor of the soft tissues possibly arising from the histiocyte. A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma in the retroperitoneal space is reported. Pathologic and clinical features of this lesion as they relate to the retroperitoneum and genitourinary tract are discussed and suggestions for therapy are presented.
