Neurofibromas in a macaw (Ara chloroptera): morphologic and immunocytochemical diagnosis

Subcutaneous neurofibroma as a cause of lameness in a warmblood horse: Neurofibroma in a horse

A neurofibroma was excised from the subcutis on the medial side of the left thigh of a 15-year-old Warmblood gelding, which had shown lameness of the left hind limb. No other source of lameness was found. Two weeks after surgery, the horse was sound at a lameness examination.

Benign Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor in a Wild Toco Toucan ( Ramphastos toco )

Peripheral nerve sheath tumors are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that comprise neurofibromas, schwannomas, neurilemmomas, and perineuromas. In animals, peripheral nerve sheath neoplasms are most commonly diagnosed in dogs and cattle, followed by horses, goats, and cats, but their occurrence is uncommon in birds. An adult, free-living, male toco (common) toucan ( Ramphastos toco ) was admitted to the zoo animal clinic with weight loss, dehydration, and presence of a soft nodule adhered to the medial portion of the left pectoral muscle. Clinical, cytologic, and computed tomography scan results were indicative of a neoplasm. The toucan died during surgical resection of the mass. Necropsy, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the diagnosis of benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor. To our knowledge, benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor has not previously been reported in a toucan or any other species in the order Piciformes.

Peripheral nerve sheath tumor in a subadult golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos)

A 5-year-old, female golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) was admitted with tetraplegia that progressed to a nonambulatory, spastic tetraparesis after a few days of treatment. Clinical and radiologic examinations, including radiography, computed tomography scan, and myelography, were indicative of neoplasia involving a spinal nerve root. Postmortem magnetic resonance imaging and necropsy findings confirmed the diagnosis of a peripheral nerve sheath neoplasia, not, to our knowledge, previously reported in a raptor.

Multiple endocardial neurofibromas in a rosy-billed pochard (Netta peposaca)

Endocardial neoplasms are uncommon in veterinary species with most cases restricted to endocardial schwannomas in aged rats. A 15-year-old male rosy-billed pochard (Netta peposaca) was diagnosed following necropsy with numerous, proliferative endocardial masses. Histologically, these masses were composed of interlacing streams and bundles of neoplastic spindle cells supported by a fine fibrovascular stroma. Rare areas of cellular and nuclear palisading were present in the nodules. Approximately 60% of the neoplastic cells were strongly positive for S-100, whereas none of the neoplastic cells was positive for desmin, synaptophysin, neurofilament, and glial fibrillary acidic protein. The histologic features coupled with the S-100 immunoreactivity led to a diagnosis of endocardial neurofibroma.

Localized, plexiform, diffuse, and other variants of neurofibroma in 12 dogs, 2 horses, and a chicken

In humans, neurofibroma and schwannoma are distinct entities within the group of benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors. In the veterinary literature, these tumors are often classified together simply as benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors, and diagnostic criteria for their subclassification are not well established. We describe peripheral nerve sheath tumors with microscopic, immunohistologic, and ultrastructural features similar to those in subtypes of human neurofibroma in 12 dogs, 2 horses, and 1 chicken. Dogs were of different breeds and were aged 2 months to 15 years. The canine tumors were located in the skin, peripheral nerve, tongue, and large intestine. The 2 horses were 11 and 12 years old. The equine tumors were located in the subcutis of the neck and axilla. The chicken was a mature white Leghorn chicken with an ocular neoplasm. Neurofibromas of this study had localized, plexiform, diffuse and combined plexiform and diffuse growth patterns, and microscopic features similar to those in classic, collagenous, cellular, myxoid, and pigmented neurofibromas of humans. One diffuse neurofibroma contained areas of schwannian differentiation (hybrid neurofibroma-schwannoma). Two plexiform neurofibromas occurred together with diffuse ganglioneuromatosis in the large intestine of young dogs, as has also been reported in humans. This investigation shows the existence of identical subtypes of neurofibroma in animals and humans and identifies similarities in tumor location and patient age between animals and humans. This report will allow a more discriminating classification of benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors and probably has a bearing on epidemiology, pathogenesis and prognosis.
