Abstract
With increasing production of kitchen waste, cooking oil gradually enters the soil, where it can negatively affect soil fauna. In this study, we explored the effects of soybean oil on the survival, growth, reproduction, tissue structure, biochemical responses, mRNA expression, and gut microbiome of earthworms (Eisenia fetida). The median lethal concentration of soybean oil was found to be 15.59%. Earthworm growth and reproduction were significantly inhibited following exposure to a sublethal concentration of soybean oil (1/3 LC50, 5.2%). The activity of the antioxidant enzymes total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) were affected under soybean oil exposure. The glutathione (GSH) content decreased significantly, whereas that of the lipid peroxide malondialdehyde (MDA) increased significantly after soybean oil exposure. mRNA expression levels of the SOD, metallothionein (MT), lysenin and lysozyme were significantly upregulated. The abundance of Bacteroides species, which are related to mineral oil repair, and Muribaculaceae species, which are related to immune regulation, increased within the earthworm intestine. These results indicate that soybean oil waste is toxic to earthworms. Thus, earthworms deployed defense mechanisms involving antioxidant system and gut microbiota for protection against soybean oil exposure-induced stress.

Abstract
The high oil and salt content of kitchen waste (KW) inhibit bioconversion and humus production. To efficiently degrade oily kitchen waste (OKW), a halotolerant bacterial strain, Serratia marcescens subsp. SLS which could transform various animal fats and vegetable oils, was isolated from KW compost. Its identification, phylogenetic analysis, lipase activity assays, and oil degradation in liquid medium were assessed, and then it was employed to carry out a simulated OKW composting experiment. In liquid medium, the 24 h degradation rate of mixed oils (soybean oil: peanut oil: olive oil: lard = 1:1:1:1, v/v/v/v) was up to 87.37% at 30 °C, pH 7.0, 280 rpm, 2% oil concentration and 3% NaCl concentration. The ultra-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) method demonstrated that the mechanism of SLS strain metabolizing long-chain triglycerides (TAGs) (C53-C60), especially the biodegradation of TAG (C18:3/C18:3/C18:3) by the strain can reach more than 90%. Degradation of 5, 10, 15% concentrations of total mixed oil were also calculated to be 64.57, 71.25, 67.99% respectively after a simulated composting duration of 15 days. The results suggest that the isolated strain of S. marcescens subsp. SLS is suitable for OKW bioremediation in high NaCl concentration within a reasonably short period of time. The findings introduced a salt-tolerant and oil-degrading bacteria, providing insights into the mechanism of oil biodegradation and offering new avenues of study for OKW compost and oily wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Earthworm gut microbiota is vital in degrading bio-waste during vermicomposting. However, microbial dynamics in earthworm gut during this process are unclear. Thus, the aim is to firstly report the bacterial dynamics in both foregut and hindgut of earthworms over a 28 days' timeframe of vermicomposting by Eisenia foetida with the nutrition supplied by kitchen waste. Results showed that except the changing of the bacterial diversity, composition and structure, dynamics of the foregut and hindgut bacteria also differed during vermicomposting which related to the changes of nutrient provision. Day 3 was a turning point. The abundant bacteria of the top 20 % genera nearly did not overlap between the foregut and hindgut. In the end of vermicomposting, a remarkable stable bacterial structure appeared in the hindgut compared to somewhat muddled one in the foregut. Understanding the dynamics of earthworm gut microbiota enables the improvements to regulate the efficiency of organic waste vermicomposting.

Abstract
Population growth and social changes have recently contributed to an exaggerated increase in kitchen wastes in China. Vermicomposting has recently been recognized as an effective and eco-friendly method of organic waste treatment through the combination of earthworms and microbes. However, the influence of salt in kitchen wastes on vermicomposting have been unknown. The goal of this study was to analyze the influence of different salinities on earthworms (Eisenia fetida) and the products during the vermicomposting of kitchen wastes. In our research, kitchen wastes were divided into four different salinities: 0% (A), 0.1% (B), 0.2% (C) and 0.3% (D). The chemical characters of substrates and earthworm growth were measured on the 14th day and the 28th day of composting. Our results show that the high salinity (measured >0.2%) prevented earthworms from properly growing and had negative effects on quality of products in composting. T2 (measured salinity = 0.2%) had the highest average body weight, nitrate nitrogen, and available phosphorus. Thus, the salinity of kitchen wastes should be pretreated to less than 0.2% before vermicomposting.
