Exploring Coping Strategies Among Older Women Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence During COVID-19

This interpretive description study explored coping among older women in Ontario experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) during COVID-19. Twelve in-depth interviews with older women found age-related normative beliefs played a role in how older women viewed their lives and how they looked beyond their experiences of IPV. Their roles as caretakers and homemakers influenced their response to IPV, and COVID-19 exacerbated feelings of lost time and loneliness. Coping strategies consisted of social support, including telephone formal services and physical activities. Women expressed a lack of appropriate services and financial limitations as barriers. They identified the need for age-appropriate services that acknowledge their unique experiences.

Developing a Comprehensive Understanding of Older Person Abuse in Canadian Immigrant Communities: An Integrative Review

Older immigrants represent 28% of the Canadian population who are over the age of 60. World-wide 1 in 6 older persons experiences abuse. Due to population aging, attention must be paid to the abuse and victimization of older immigrant persons, and the concept of elder abuse. The purpose of this integrative review was to understand elder abuse from the perspective of older immigrants, who came to Canada in their 60s or older as dependents of families or sponsors. Whittemore and Knafl’s (2005) method of review resulted in six articles that met the inclusion criteria. Results revealed three themes: conceptualization of abuse, post-immigration stressors and cultural factors, and barriers to access support and protection. The perpetrators were often close family members including intimate partners, spouses, children, children-in-laws and grandchildren. Contextual factors that influenced abuse included: power imbalance, change in social status from head of the families to legal and financial dependents due to immigration, culture, ethnicity, gender role expectations and language barrier. More research is needed to understand the diverse older immigrants experiences of elder abuse.

Domestic Violence and Immigrant Women: A Glimpse Behind a Veiled Door

Domestic violence (DV) experienced by immigrant women is a public health concern. In collaboration with a community agency, researchers undertook a retrospective review of 1,763 client files from 2006-2014. The three aims were to document the incidence of DV, service needs associated with DV, and identification of risk factors associated with DV in the extracted file data. About 41% reported DV and required multiple services. Separated and divorced women, and women on visitor/temporary visas showed the highest risk. The results underscore the value of research partnerships with community-based service agencies in increasing our understanding of DV among immigrant women.

Violence against older women: A systematic review of qualitative literature

The majority of the existing evidence-base on violence against women focuses on women of reproductive age (15–49), and globally there is sparse evidence concerning patterns of and types of violence against women aged 50 and older. Improved understanding of differing patterns and dynamics of violence older women experienced is needed to ensure appropriate policy or programmatic responses. To address these gaps in the evidence, we conducted a systematic review of qualitative literature on violence against older women, including any form of violence against women, rather than adopting a specific theoretical framework on what types of violence or perpetrators should be included from the outset, and focusing specifically on qualitative studies, to explore the nature and dynamics of violence against older women from the perspective of women. Following pre-planned searches of 11 electronic databases, two authors screened all identified titles, abstracts and relevant full texts for inclusion in the review. We extracted data from 52 manuscripts identified for inclusion, and conducted quality assessment and thematic synthesis from the key findings of the included studies. Results indicated that the vast majority of included studies were conducted in high-income contexts, and did not contain adequate information on study setting and context. Thematic synthesis identified several central themes, including the intersection between ageing and perceptions of, experiences of and response to violence; the centrality of social and gender norms in shaping older women’s experiences of violence; the cumulative physical and mental health impact of exposure to lifelong violence, and that specific barriers exist for older women accessing community supports and health services to address violence victimization. Our findings indicated that violence against older women is prevalent and has significant impacts on physical and mental well-being of older women. Implications for policy and programmatic response, as well as future research directions, are highlighted.

Violence against older women: a protocol for a systematic review of qualitative literature

INTRODUCTION

There is sparse evidence globally concerning patterns of and types of violence against women aged 50 and older. Improved understanding of older women's experiences of violence, including types of violence, perpetrators and health impacts, is needed to address evident gaps in the literature, address requirements for monitoring and reporting on global sustainable development goal indicators, and inform policy and programming for preventing and responding to violence against older women. The aim of the systematic review is to identify, evaluate and synthesise qualitative studies from all countries, exploring violence against women aged 50 and above, identifying types and patterns of violence, perpetrators of violence and impacts of violence on various health outcomes for older women.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

A systematic search for qualitative studies of violence against older women will be conducted in the following databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, CINAHL, PILOTS, ERIC, Social Work Abstracts, International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, Social Services Abstracts, ProQuest Criminal Justice and Dissertations and Theses Global. Studies will be focused on violence against older women (aged 50 and above), using qualitative methodology, exploring women's experiences of any type of violence perpetrated by any type of perpetrator. Two authors will independently review titles and abstracts retrieved through the search strategy. Data extraction will be conducted independently by one author and quality assessment will be conducted by two authors, using an adapted version of the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme scale. Data will be analysed and synthesised using a thematic synthesis approach.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

Ethics approvals are not required as primary data are not being collected. Findings will be disseminated through a publication in a peer-reviewed journal and used to inform development of a module to measure violence against older women, for use in specialised violence against women surveys.

Intimate Partner Violence in the Golden Age: Systematic Review of Risk and Protective Factors

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is identifiable as a major public health concern worldwide. The international literature highlights how this phenomenon is complex and transversal to all age groups. While the global population is becoming older, the scientific research about risk and protective factors related to IPV in the golden age is diverse, and the different findings of the various studies have not been systematized so far. Thus, in this systematic review, we aim to analyze the scientific studies that investigate the risk and the protective factors of violent dynamics between elderly couples. From the perspective of the theoretical frameworks and the methodological approaches used, we present the main conceptual themes that emerge. Following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement, we review the articles that report the analyses of protective and risk factors of IPV perpetration. Our results indicate social support, help-seeking behavior, and the availability of community-based services addressing the issues of abuse as the main protective factors. The risk factors are related to economic conditions, belonging to an ethnic minority, cognitive or physical impairment, other conditions associated with cultural background and relational dynamics, such as intrapartner dependence and intergenerational transmission of violence and trauma, and caregiving stress. We discuss possible future directions of research to improve the understanding of IPV in the elderly population and the implications for the development of intervention policies at preventive and supportive levels.
