A content analysis of YouTube videos on palliative care: understanding the quality and availability of online resources

Background

Improvement in quality care is an important aspect of palliative care for individuals with serious illnesses. Palliative care is a multidisciplinary strategy that addresses the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. As technology advances, digital media - especially YouTube - has come to serve as a virtual educational platform, offering resources for health-related information, including information about palliative care.

Objectives

In this research, the main goal was to evaluate the quality and availability of online resources related to palliative care.

Design

Two theoretical frameworks were used: the Health Communication Model and the Information Quality Framework. These frameworks offer a way to understand how YouTube videos contribute to palliative care information and assess the quality of that information.

Methods

This study utilizes a quantitative analysis approach to assess the quality and accessibility of YouTube videos on palliative care. Specifically, a random sample of 300 YouTube videos addressing palliative care was examined. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data, including the frequency and distribution of the different types of content, sources, and quality indicators. Chi-square tests were done to compare the quality of information provided by different sources and types of content.

Results

The results showed a variety of video types, with educational videos being the most common (40%), followed by personal stories (26.7%) and promotional videos (16.7%). We found that healthcare organizations (30%) and individual content creators (46.7%) were the sources for these videos.

Conclusion

There were varying scores in terms of accuracy, completeness, and relevance when it came to quality assessment. While many videos received excellent ratings, some received poor ratings. Additionally, this analysis revealed that the majority of these videos were in English (83.3%), which poses a limitation for non-English speakers who may have difficulty understanding them.

Multimodal approaches for inequality in kidney care: turning social determinants of health into opportunities

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Kidney disease is associated with major health and economic burdens worldwide, disproportionately carried by people in low and middle socio-demographic index quintile countries and in underprivileged communities. Social determinants such as education, income and living and working conditions strongly influence kidney health outcomes. This review synthesised recent research into multimodal interventions to promote kidney health equity that focus on the social determinants of health.

RECENT FINDINGS

Inequity in kidney healthcare commonly arises from nationality, race, sex, food insecurity, healthcare access and environmental conditions, and affects kidney health outcomes such as chronic kidney disease progression, dialysis and transplant access, morbidity and mortality. Multimodal approaches to addressing this inequity were identified, targeted to: patients, families and caregivers (nutrition, peer support, financial status, patient education and employment); healthcare teams (workforce, healthcare clinician education); health systems (data coding, technology); communities (community engagement); and health policy (clinical guidelines, policy, environment and research).

SUMMARY

The engagement of diverse patients, families, caregivers and communities in healthcare research and implementation, as well as clinical care delivery, is vital to counteracting the deleterious effects of social determinants of kidney health.

YouTubeTM as a source of information on autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: A quality analysis

Introduction

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common inherited kidney disease in adults. As a social media platform, YouTube has tremendous potential to both support and hinder public health efforts. The aim of this study was to assess the reliability and quality of the most viewed English-language YouTube videos on ADPKD.

Methods

A YouTube search was conducted on 3 August 2023, using the keyword ADPKD disease and the top 200 videos were analyzed for relevance. Videos in the "Short" category that were duplicates, were not in English, were not audio or visual, and contained advertisements were excluded. Two reviewers divided the 159 included videos into groups based on their source and content.

Results

In 106 (66.7%) of the 159 videos, general information about the disease was given, 58 (36.5%) discussed medical treatment, 11 (6.9%) discussed surgical treatment, 30 (18.9%) included patient images and radiological images, and eight (5%) discussed the genetic and pathological features of the disease. Additionally, 16 (10.1%) videos fell into the "other" category. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, Quality Criteria for Consumer Health Information and Global Quality Scale scoring systems, videos uploaded by health associations and foundations received the highest scores (3 (1-4), 54 (28-70), 4 (1-5), respectively).

Conclusion

Academic institutions and other official health organizations such as Health Associations/Foundations need to use YouTube more effectively to disseminate accurate, reliable and useful health-related information to society.

Harnessing Social Media to Enhance Nephrology Academia

The process of learning has been confined to the realms of educational institutions. Over the last ten years, the semantics of social media networks have evolved with the use of mobile gadgets. Consequently, nephrologists have realised the potential benefits of using these platforms for their educational and career development. Social media can change the horizon of nephrology education. The concept of bedside examination, teaching and sharing experiences have changed with the advent of Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and X (former Twitter). Other networking portals, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, X (former Twitter), and Pinterest, have also amassed the attention of selected users. Despite split opinions on the utility of social media, it is undeniable that it has influenced interaction between students and mentors. Resources ranging from online networks, blogs, visual aids, podcasts, online journal clubs, videos, live conference coverages, and tutorials have made it possible for nephrologists to stay informed and educated with recent updates. In this review, we discuss how social media can enrich nephrology academia, facilitate the sharing of research and access to fellowships and mentorship programs, provide career prospects to trainees, and broadcast scientific conferences while bringing nephrology societies together.
