Cultural understandings of fathering and fatherhood in India: An exploration of lived experiences

Conceptualization of fathers as an essential begetter survives within and through their relationship in family through ages. However, within and behind this word, a social-construct, the journey of fathers remains non-located in researches on parenting in India. Thus, this study aims to develop an indigenous conceptualization of fatherhood in the cultural realm of India from father’s and child’s perspective. Carried out in eight two-child families in Delhi, the study is done through semi-structured interviews with fathers and Draw and tell method with their elder child (7–11 years). Thematic analysis of both father’s and children’s narratives helped create seven themes within each. The themes from father’s narratives include multiple shades of “father”, ‘being a father’: a world within, learnings about ‘being a father’, father as enablers of child’s ‘becoming’, picturing ‘ideal’ fathers, cultural mountings and ‘cultures’ of fatherhood. The themes obtained from children’s narratives include father as a playtime partner, inspiring figure, mainstay, shield, involved, not-so-involved. Viewed holistically, this study holds implications for parenting practices and policy makers in positive direction.

Torn between two worlds: parental experiences of neonatal follow-up for infants with hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy in India-a qualitative study using interpretative phenomenological analysis

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to understand the barriers and facilitators of a neonatal follow-up programme, as perceived by parents of infants born with hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE).

DESIGN

This study applied a qualitative study design using interpretative phenomenological analysis. It included focus group discussions, face-to-face in-depth interviews and telephonic interviews. Data were analysed using thematic content analysis.

SETTING

Neonatal follow-up clinic of a tertiary hospital in South India. The study was conducted between March and December 2020.

PARTICIPANTS

Five fathers and eight mothers of infants with HIE.

RESULTS

Parents of children with HIE are torn between two worlds-an atmosphere of support and one of criticism. Three main themes were identified: (1) neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay: distressful versus reassuring experiences; (2) parenthood: supportive versus unsupportive environments; and (3) neonatal follow-up: adherence versus non-adherence.

CONCLUSION

Parents of children with HIE experience sociocultural barriers in the NICU, after discharge and during the follow-up period. These lead to a complex array of emotional and physical consequences that affect parenting and follow-up care.

Experiencing Childhood in the Context of Societal Academic Expectations

The present paper discusses in part the findings from the first author’s master’s dissertation exploring the experience of childhood in the context of increased academic expectations in society, with special reference to Kerala, India. The objectives were to understand how academic expectations on children shape their childhoods and to document children’s time use and daily lives. A mixed research design was chosen: in-depth interviews were supplemented by a quantitative study on the time allocations of children for different activities. Triangulation of data was done by interviewing three groups of participants: children (n = 10), parents (n = 8), and key informants (n = 3) selected through convenience and purposive sampling. The qualitative data and time-use data are from separate samples. The latter study was conducted on fifth and sixth graders (N = 320) from the Kozhikode district of Kerala. Children’s voices indicated an over-emphasis on academic achievement from different quarters: parents, teachers, and peers. This is reflected in their day-to-day conversations, peer cultures, and daily pursuits. Findings from the time-use study supported the qualitative data: routines of children predominantly revolved around academic activities (35% of 24 hours, including time at school), and little time was devoted to physical play (5.67%). Parents’ voices corroborated these findings and gave insights into the children’s internalization of societal beliefs regarding academic achievement. Inputs from the key informants helped understand the development of the societal beliefs and practices that perpetuate a preoccupation with educational attainment in the community, and the adverse psycho-social impact it has on the children in this context.

Demonstrating the importance of cultural considerations at end of life utilizing the perspective of Indian patients with cancer

PURPOSE

This study aimed to understand Indian cancer patients' hopes and beliefs about the end of life, particularly focusing on how this informed their preferences regarding end-of-life treatment. In India, individuals' lives are mainly guided by culturally driven practices of doing right by one's family and believing death is predetermined.

METHODS

Indian patients (25) diagnosed with advanced incurable cancer and aware of their prognosis participated in semi-structured interviews exploring their hopes as they approached the end of life. The interview also sought to understand patients' views and beliefs about do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders and euthanasia. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis.

RESULTS

Two major themes were identified: (i) a desire for living or dying comprising sub-themes of perceptions of current responsibilities, and having a fighting spirit versus feelings of despair, and (ii) God was the ultimate decision-maker of life and death. Furthermore, patients understood that a do-not-resuscitate order meant euthanasia and responded accordingly. Some patients reported hoping for death due to the pain and resultant suffering. However, patients did not talk about euthanasia openly, instead choosing to describe it within a larger framework of life and death.

CONCLUSIONS

Indian patients reaching the end of life valued their family responsibilities which determined their desire to live or die. However, all patients believed that God decided on their life and death. It is important to consider cultural perspectives on DNR or euthanasia and to address patients' pain management needs towards the end of life.

African American Fathers' Perceived Role for the Dietary Behaviors of Their Children: A Qualitative Study

The purpose of this study is to investigate African American (AA) fathers’ involvement in promoting healthful decisions related to obesity and the issues that are potentially influencing dietary patterns among their children and within their households. This exploratory study gathered data via semistructured focus groups (n = 3), which were thematically analyzed utilizing a grounded theory approach. Participants included AA fathers (n = 20) with a mean age of 37 years (±11.79), all of which had one or more children between the ages of 6 and 18 years. Three significant subthemes emerged from the focus group sessions, which included fathers’ perspectives about: (a) teaching by example; (b) eating healthy is expensive; and (c) cooking and eating at home. Understanding AA fathers’ perceived and desired role in their children’s health edification can inform initiatives that actively engage these men, and nurture their level of involvement, to promote positive health behaviors among their children. Such efforts are necessary for AA fathers to realize their potential to effectively serve as change agents and actively improve the health of their children, families, and communities.
