A multisectoral approach to primary health care in Fujian, China

Awareness of tobacco advertising, perceived harms of smoking, and beliefs about tobacco control among a sample of Shanghainese in China

This study aims to examine beliefs among residents of Shanghai, China concerning tobacco advertising and control policies concurrent with new restrictions on tobacco use and advertising in the city. A total of 518 residents of Shanghai completed a telephone interview survey. We found that 51% of participants had seen or heard of the Zhonghua cigarette brand's 'Love China' tobacco ad campaign in the past 2 years, 59% believed that the campaign would influence people to buy this specific cigarette brand as a gift, and 30% believed that it would encourage smoking. More than 75% of respondents would support legislation banning tobacco advertising in all public places, and 88% would support legislation prohibiting smoking in all public places. Multivariate analyses indicated that those who were female, more than 50 years, have accepted college and above education, and perceived greater benefits to smoking cessation were more likely to support banning tobacco advertising and prohibiting smoking in public places. Non-smokers were more likely to support prohibiting smoking in public places. The findings suggest that although tobacco advertising is widely prevalent in Shanghai, it is disliked by the public. Respondents showed high levels of support for tobacco control policies.

Partnerships identified within primary health care literature

Primary health care promotes partnership in nursing. The purpose of this study was to delineate defining characteristics of partnerships within primary health care and to identify strategies to facilitate the development of these partnerships. Findings from this integrative review of the literature include the development of a partnership framework that emerged from the meanings inherent in the prefixes of words used to describe "multi", "inter", and "intra" partnerships. Also, the findings revealed characteristics of partner expectations, attributes of active and passive participation, and strategies to foster, and barriers to hinder, active participation. Using the developed partnership framework, implications for practice, education, and research have been discerned.

Estimating the risks and prevalence of hypertension in a suburban area of Beijing

Community-oriented primary care (COPC) provides a framework for identifying and addressing a defined community's health and health care needs. The research reported upon here is based on a community health survey in a new suburban neighborhood (Tayuan region) in the Haidian district of Beijing, conducted by the Beijing Medical University Department of Preventive Medicine and Health Care, to serve as a basis for planning health care services for the residents in that community. The analyses focus on the prevalence and predictors of hypertension among older adult residents (those 45 years of age and older). Based on logistic regression analyses, the odds ratios (in parentheses) confirm that individuals with a family history of cardiovascular disease were more likely to have been diagnosed as hypertensive (1.57). Hypertensives were also more likely to have uncontrolled systolic (3.85) or diastolic (4.75) blood pressure and associated behavioral and biologic risks, such as obesity (1.87) and renal damage (2.60). These risks were even greater among current or former smokers. These analyses will inform the design of community-oriented primary care interventions in that particular community in the People's Republic of China. They also signal important implications and highlight practical methods for assessing and targeting interventions in U.S. communities facing comparable, but unexamined, risks.
