Laser ion mobility spectrometry in the detection of ultra-low quantities of explosives

Negative-mode ion mobility spectrometry-comparison of ion-molecule reactions and electron capture processes

The presented work concerns the impact of ionization mechanisms of analytes on detection sensitivity in negative-mode ion mobility spectrometry. The main part of the work is research conducted for selected organic analytes using DT IMS in the negative mode of operation. In the negative mode of detection, two ionization mechanisms can be used: electron capture and ion-molecule reactions. The type of ionization mechanism depends on the carrier gas. The tests were carried out using two carrier gases: air and nitrogen. This allowed for a comparison of the ionization of analytes in the ion-molecule reaction mode with ionization in electron capture mode. Experiments were carried out for tetrachloromethane, trichloromethane, benzyl chloride, 1-chlorobutane, 1-chlorohexane, 1-chloropentane, tetrachlorethylene, 1-bromobutane, 1-bromopentane, 1-bromohexane, hexafluorobenzene, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), and methyl salicylate. Most of the tested substances were ionized with the formation of ionized halogen atoms (Br^- or Cl^-). It was found that among the tested substances, there are those whose effective ionization is possible with the use of both nitrogen and air as carrier gases, those ionized only in electron capture mode or in ion-molecule reaction mode. The important part of the work was an investigation on the effect of oxygen and water admixtures in carrier gases on the detection efficiency of selected organic compounds.

Fabrication and application of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol sensors based on fluorescent functional materials

2,4,6-Trinitrophenol (TNP) has been widely used for a long time. The adverse effects of TNP on ecological environment and human health have promoted researchers to develop various methods for detecting TNP. Among multifarious technologies utilized for the TNP detection, fluorescence strategy based on different functional materials has become an effective and efficient method attributed to its merits such as preferable sensitivity and selectivity, rapid response speed, simple operation, and lower cost, which is also the focus of review. This review summarizes the development status of fluorescence sensors for TNP in a detailed and systematic way, especially focusing on the research progress since 2015. The sensing properties of fluorescent materials for TNP are the core of this review, including nanomaterials, organic small molecules, emerging supramolecular systems, aggregation induced emission materials and others. Moreover, the development direction and prospect of fluorescence sensing method in the field of TNP detection are introduced and discussed at the end of review.

Investigation of corona discharge ionization of barbituric acid using ion mobility spectrometry along with quantum chemical calculations

This study aimed at examining atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization of barbituric acid through the corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry (CD-IMS) and the quantum chemical calculations. The results indicated two product ion peaks in the IMS spectrum of barbituric acid. The thermal decomposition of the barbituric acid sample was investigated by scanning the temperature of the injection port and analyzing the temporal evolution of the IMS peaks over elapsed time. It was found that the barbituric acid sample was not thermally decomposed in the injection port of the instrument. Experimental evidences were collected by changing the reactant ions, concentration of barbituric acid sample, and IMS cell temperature. The two observed peaks were then assigned to cationic form and oxygen protonated isomers of barbituric acid. The positions of the product ion peaks were explicated considering the dipole moments of the product ions.

Recent Developments in the Field of Explosive Trace Detection

Explosive trace detection (ETD) technologies play a vital role in maintaining national security. ETD remains an active research area with many analytical techniques in operational use. This review details the latest advances in animal olfactory, ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), and Raman and colorimetric detection methods. Developments in optical, biological, electrochemical, mass, and thermal sensors are also covered in addition to the use of nanomaterials technology. Commercially available systems are presented as examples of current detection capabilities and as benchmarks for improvement. Attention is also drawn to recent collaborative projects involving government, academia, and industry to highlight the emergence of multimodal screening approaches and applications. The objective of the review is to provide a comprehensive overview of ETD by highlighting challenges in ETD and providing an understanding of the principles, advantages, and limitations of each technology and relating this to current systems.

Interpol review of detection and characterization of explosives and explosives residues 2016-2019
