Development and Psychometric Properties of a Prostate Cancer Knowledge Scale for African American Men

Assessment of Knowledge, Practices, and Attitudes Toward Prostate Cancer and Its Screening Among Men Aged 40 Years and Older in the United Arab Emirates: A Cross-Sectional Study

INTRODUCTION

 Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men globally and the fifth greatest cause of cancer-related mortality. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), prostate cancer has been on the rise due to population aging. However, knowledge deficits and screening barriers do exist because of cultural, social, and psychological factors. The objective of this study is to assess the knowledge, practices, and attitudes of prostate cancer and its screening among men aged 40 years and above in the UAE.

METHODOLOGY

 A cross-sectional study was conducted between September 5 and October 31, 2024, using a self-administered online questionnaire distributed through social media platforms. Data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using SPSS version 26 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY).

RESULTS

 A total of 471 responses were analyzed. The median age of participants was 51 ± 12. Most of the respondents were non-healthcare workers with at least a bachelor's degree. Most of the participants were moderately aware of prostate cancer risk factors and symptoms. However, there was a severe lack of awareness of genetic predisposition and racial risk factors. While 80.3% of participants were aware of the role of prostate-specific antigen test in prostate screening, 62.8% recognize the role of a digital rectal examination. The most important barriers to screening were lack of perceived risk, time constraint, and fear of diagnosis.

CONCLUSION

 Significant knowledge gaps and barriers to prostate screening exist. Health education initiatives targeting cultural stigma with the use of culturally appropriate and accurate information through credible online platforms are necessary.

Prostate cancer screening in Black men: Screening intention, knowledge, attitudes, and reasons for participation

The objective of the present study is to capture the prostate cancer screening intention, knowledge levels, attitudes, and reasons for participation in screening among African American men. African American men aged from 35 to 65 in Georgia, North Carolina, and Ohio were recruited for study (N = 168). Questionnaires were administered using validated instruments. Findings suggest critical needs for community-based social workers to communicate the importance of prostate cancer screening and risk factors among African American men. Increasing the use of culturally relevant community health education might benefit underserved minority men at risk of having prostate cancer.

Adaptation and Initial Psychometric Evaluation of an Informed Prostate Cancer Screening Decision Self-Efficacy Scale for African-American Men

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate whether computer-based prostate cancer screening decision aids enhance decision self-efficacy for African-American men, culturally relevant and reliable measures are needed. However, limited psychometric evidence exists on the health-related decision self-efficacy of African-American men. This study describes the development and psychometric evaluation of the 11-item Informed Prostate Cancer Screening Decision Self-Efficacy Scale among 354 African-American men.

METHODS

Exploratory factor analysis was conducted with maximum-likelihood estimation and polychoric correlations followed by Promax and Varimax rotations.

RESULTS

Exploratory factor analysis yielded a one-factor, 11-item model of the modified scale with excellent internal consistency reliability at 0.95 and factor loadings ranging from 0.70 to 0.90. Both parallel analysis and a scree plot confirmed the retention of one factor, and the standardized root mean square residual (0.06) indicated that the factor structure explained most of the correlations.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings suggest the one-factor, 11-item Informed Prostate Cancer Screening Decision Self-Efficacy Scale has excellent psychometric properties and utility in reliably measuring health-related decision self-efficacy in African-American men. Future research is needed to confirm this factor structure among socio-demographically diverse African Americans.
