The perceptions and experiences of nurses undertaking research in the clinical setting

Nursing research activity by clinicians has increased in volume in the last few years, due to an increased awareness of the importance of evidence-based practice, the shift of nurse education into higher education establishments and the emergence of new nursing roles which demand research activity as a central domain of the role. This paper will report on the results of a study examining nursing research activity in the UK National Health Service and will present data examining the perceptions and experiences of nurses undertaking research. Forty-eight research-active nurses in five NHS organisations were interviewed. Data were analysed using the Framework approach. Four main themes emerged: perceptions of nursing research, NHS influences, support systems and individual influences. Many factors were identified by nurses that influenced their experiences and perceptions, and nurses frequently reported difficulties in being able to conduct research in the clinical area. Dissemination via publication was rare. Personal sacrifices were common and nurses felt that these were not recognised by managers. Nurses undertaking research need more structured support systems and recognition of the value of nursing research. Individualised help from more experienced researchers for support and to disseminate findings is recommended.

Developing excellence in nursing and midwifery research

This paper builds on Tierney’s 1998 address to the annual RCN International Nursing Research Conference. It explores criteria for excellence in nursing and midwifery research, differentiating this from ‘cutting edge’ and ‘international’ descriptors. Members of an expert panel were asked to give ideas on how to create excellence and to provide examples of such work, and on how to develop leaders in research. Their inspiration is presented here. The last section of the paper examines the creation of research teams within the current financial strictures.

Evidence in action: fostering growth of research-based practice in children's cancer nursing

It is an honour to be the first children's nurse to be asked to deliver the Robert Tiffany Lecture. However, the invite also provoked some anxiety: the responsibility weighs heavy. An opportunity to both celebrate the success of the speciality and explore the challenges that still face children's cancer nurses could not be missed. Two themes provide the focus for this paper, that of growth and evidence in action. Firstly, I will spend some time reflecting on how far we have come, describing stages of growth, development, maturation and differentiation in children's cancer nursing that defines nurses, and the speciality, as both similar and different to other nurses and other specialities. Secondly, I want to explore the notion of evidence and action and share some of the challenges we face in developing research for practice. The challenges themselves are of interest to all cancer nurses, as the solutions described have the potential for translation to other areas within cancer care. Children's cancer nursing is a relatively new speciality, and in terms of research in nursing this has only become integrated into our work in more recent years. Like many areas in nursing we continue to evolve, by anticipating and responding to changes in cancer treatments and thus influence healthcare delivery. This paper represents a point in time in the United Kingdom. Children's cancer nursing has unique qualities that attract nurses to work in the speciality, the essence of which is knowing about children and young people.

Barriers to evidence based practice in primary care: a review of the literature

People with health problems deserve a service that is based on best available evidence and is possible within obtainable resources. No credible health professional could deny that sound evidence should be an integral part of clinical decision making. The demand for up to date information to inform care and treatment highlights the crucial role of research and development in the modern health service. However, within primary care, practitioners have not always been able to underpin their actions with robust research findings. In addition, the research activities within primary care are limited to a small number of 'enthusiasts'. This paper aims to analyse the literature surrounding this area, highlighting the significance of United Kingdom (UK) government reports on primary care, primary care research activities and the pursuit of evidence based practice in primary care. It shows that primary care research has been the 'poor relation' in terms of research funding and this has resulted is a dearth of high quality research results to underpin practice.
