Low-Carbon Ti-Mo Microalloyed Hot Rolled Steels: Special Features of the Formation of the Structural State and Mechanical Properties

Low-carbon Ti-Mo microalloyed steels represent a new generation of high strength steels for automobile sheet. Excellent indicators of difficult-to-combine technological, strength, and other service properties are achieved due to the superposition of a dispersed ferrite matrix and a bulk system of nanoscale carbide precipitates. Recently, developments are underway to optimize thermo-deformation processing for the most efficient use of phase precipitates. The review summarizes and analyzes the results of studies of mechanical properties depending on the chemical composition and parameters of hot deformation of low-carbon Ti-Mo microalloyed steels. Particular attention is paid to the features of the formation and the influence of various types of phase precipitates and the dispersion of the microstructure on mechanical properties. The advantages of Ti-Mo microalloying system and the tasks requiring further solution are shown.

Double twist torsion testing to determine the non recrystallization temperature

A double-twist torsion testing technique has been developed using a 316 stainless steel as an exemplar material to experimentally assess recrystallization behavior and determine the non-recrystallization temperature (T_nr). This new method was compared to the traditional methods of double-hit compression and multi-step hot torsion testing. The double-twist torsion test allows T_nr to be related to the extent of austenite recrystallization through measurements of fractional softening while accommodating multiple deformation and recrystallization steps with a single specimen. The double-twist torsion test resulted in average T_nr values similar to those determined with multi-step hot torsion, and a partially recrystallized microstructure was observed in the vicinity of the calculated T_nr for all three methods. The ability of the double-twist torsion test to relate the experimental T_nr to the evolution of austenite recrystallization via fractional softening measurements while incorporating effects of multiple deformation steps offers an advantage over traditional methods for quantifying changes in austenite recrystallization during thermomechanical processing.

Tempforming as an Advanced Processing Method for Carbon Steels

The microstructural mechanisms providing delamination toughness in high-strength low-alloyed steels are briefly reviewed. Thermo-mechanical processing methods improving both the strength and impact toughness are described, with a close relation to the microstructures and textures developed. The effect of processing conditions on the microstructure evolution in steels with different carbon content is discussed. Particular attention is paid to tempforming treatment, which has been recently introduced as a promising processing method for high-strength low-alloyed steel semi-products with beneficial combination of strength and impact toughness. Tempforming consists of large strain warm rolling following tempering. In contrast to ausforming, the steels subjected to tempforming may exhibit an unusual increase in the impact toughness with a decrease in test temperature below room temperature. This phenomenon is attributed to the notch blunting owing to easy splitting (delamination) crosswise to the principle crack propagation. The relationships between the crack propagation mode, the delamination fracture, and the load-displacement curve are presented and discussed. Further perspectives of tempforming applications and promising research directions are outlined.

Dynamic Recrystallization of Ferrite in a Low Carbon Nb-Microalloyed Steel

The hot deformation behavior of a low carbon Nb-microalloyed steel is investigated by hot compression test in the ferrite phase region compared with a low carbon steel with similar compositions, and the effect of Nb on dynamic recrystallization of ferrite is analyzed. Results indicate that during hot deformation in the ferrite phase region, the effect of Nb solely depends on the size of NbC precipitates. Tiny particles which average size is about 7.5nm have a retarding effect on dynamic recrystallization process of ferrite, on the contrary, coarser particles which average size is about 30.6nm have a promoting effect and are of benefit to the refinement of recrystallized grains.
