A novel gas ionization sensor using Pd nanoparticle-capped ZnO

Enhanced Spectral Response of ZnO-Nanorod-Array-Based Ultraviolet Photodetectors by Alloying Non-Isovalent Cu-O with CuAlO2 P-Type Layer

CuAlO₂ was synthesized by a hydrothermal method, in which the Cu-O dimers were incorporated by simply altering the ratio of the reactants and the temperature. The incorporation process increases the grain size in CuAlO₂, and modulates the work function and binding energies for CuAlO₂ due to the partial substitution of Cu⁺ 3d¹⁰ with Cu²⁺ 3d⁹ orbitals in the valence band maximum by alloying non-isovalent Cu-O with a CuAlO₂ host. Based on the ZnO nanorod arrays (NRs) ultraviolet photodetector, CuAlO₂/Cu-O fabricated by the low-cost drop-coating method was used as the p-type hole transport layer. The incorporation of the Cu-O clusters into CuAlO₂ lattice to enhance the conductivity of CuAlO₂ is an effective way for improving ZnO NRs/CuAlO₂ device performance. The photodetectors exhibit significant diode behavior, with a rectification ratio approaching 30 at ±1 V, and a dark saturation current density 0.81 mA cm^-2. The responsivity of the ZnO-NRs-based UV photodetector increases from 13.2 to 91.3 mA/W at 0 V bias, with an increase in the detectivity from 2.35 × 10¹⁰ to 1.71 × 10¹¹ Jones. Furthermore, the ZnO NRs/[CuAlO₂/Cu-O] photodetector exhibits a maximum responsivity of 5002 mA/W at 1.5 V bias under 375 nm UV illumination.

Crystalline-to-Amorphous Phase Transformation in CuO Nanowires for Gaseous Ionization and Sensing Application

We report a dramatic reduction of operation voltage of a CuO nanowire-based ionization gas sensor due to the crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation. The structural change is attributed to the ion bombardment and heating effect during the initial discharge, which brings about the formation of abundant nanocrystallites and surface states favoring gaseous ionization. The gas-sensing properties of the CuO nanowire sensor are confirmed by differentiating various types or concentrations of volatile organic compounds diluted in nitrogen, with a low detection limit at the ppm level. Moreover, a sensing mechanism is proposed on the basis of charge redistribution by electron-gas collision related to the specific ionization energy. The insightful study of the electrode microstructure delivers an exploratory investigation to the effect of gas ionization toward the discharge system, which provides new approaches to develop advanced ionization gas sensors.

Involvement of MyD88 in zinc oxide nanoparticle-induced lung inflammation

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONP) have great potential for medical applications. However, ZnONP is reported to induce acute lung inflammation, which limits its application in humans. We designed in vivo and in vitro studies to clarify ZnONP inflammation and its associated molecular signals. ZnONP with a single dose of 80 μg/30 μl was instilled into the tracheas of mice sacrificed at days 2, 7, 14, and 28 after instillation. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed increased neutrophils and macrophages after treatment. Lung pathology showed a mixed inflammatory infiltrate of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages primarily in the bronchioles and peribronchiolar areas. Proinflammatory gene expression of TNF-α, IL-6, CXCL1, and MCP-1 was increased at day 2 and decreased after 7 days. The lung pathology resolved at day 28, without fibrosis. It remains unclear whether this acute lung inflammation was caused by ZnONP themselves or Zn(2+) iron released from the nanoparticles. In vitro studies confirming the results of in vivo studies showed increased expression of proinflammatory genes in both MLE12 cells (mouse lung epithelial cells) and RAW264.7 cells (mouse macrophages) with either ZnONP or Zn(NO₃)₂ treatment; notably, increased levels of proinflammatory genes were obviously higher in cells treated with ZnONP than in cells treated with Zn(NO₃)₂ at the same molarity dose. TNF-α and MCP-1 were induced only in MLE12 cells. MyD88, an adaptor protein for most Toll-like receptors (TLR) signaling pathways, initiated the ZnONP or Zn(NO₃)₂-induced lung inflammation. Silencing MyD88 expression with siRNA significantly reduced ZnONP or Zn(NO₃)₂-induced proinflammatory gene expression in MLE12 and RAW264.7 cells. Single-dose exposure to ZnONP produced the short-term lung inflammation via a MyD88-dependent TLR pathway. These data suggest that although both ZnONP and zinc ion might participate in the inflammatory reactions, ZnONP more effectively induced MyD88-dependent proinflammatory cytokines than zinc ion in lung epithelial cells.
