The coupling between localized surface plasmons and excitons via Purcell effect

Exploiting the signatures of nanoplasmon-exciton coupling on proton sensitive insulator-semiconductor devices for drug discovery applications

Multimodal sensing methods have a great promise in biosensing applications as they can measure independently several properties that characterise the biomolecular interaction to be detected as well as providing inherent on-chip validation of the sensing signals. This work describes the mechanisms of a concept of insulator-semiconductor field-effect devices coupled with nanoplasmonic sensing as a promising technology, which can be used for a wide range of analytical sensing applications. The developed method involves coupling of the localized surface plasmons (LSPs) within gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and excitons within pH sensitive silicon nitride (Si3N4) nanofilms for screening inhibitors of kinase, which constitute an important class of chemotherapy drugs. In parallel to this optical sensing, the pH sensitivity of silicon nitride is used to detect the release of protons associated with kinase activity. By changing the insulator and AuNPs characteristics, this work demonstrates the nanoplasmonic-exciton effects taking place, enabling the developed platform to be used for screening kinase inhibitors and as a dual mode electro-optical biosensor for routine bio/chemical sensing applications.

Asymmetric split H-shape nanoantennas for molecular sensing

In this paper we report on a very sensitive biosensor based on gold asymmetric nanoantennas that are capable of enhancing the molecular resonances of C-H bonds. The nanoantennas are arranged as arrays of asymmetric-split H-shape (ASH) structures, tuned to produce plasmonic resonances with reflectance double peaks within the mid-infrared vibrational resonances of C-H bonds for the assay of deposited films of the molecule 17β-estradiol (E2), used as an analyte. Measurements and numerical simulations of the reflectance spectra have enabled an estimated enhancement factor on the order of 10⁵ to be obtained for a thin film of E2 on the ASH array. A high sensitivity value of 2335 nm/RIU was achieved, together with a figure of merit of approximately 8. Our experimental results were corroborated using numerical simulations for the C-H stretch vibrational resonances from the analyte, superimposed on the plasmonic resonances of the ASH nanoantennas.

Enhanced photoluminescence from CdS with SiO2 nanopillar arrays

In this paper, the enhanced photoluminescence from CdS thin film with SiO₂ nanopillar array (NPA) was demonstrated. The CdS was prepared using chemical bath deposition in a solution bath containing CdSO₄, SC(NH₂)₂, and NH₄OH. The SiO₂ NPA was fabricated by the nanosphere lithography (NSL) techniques. The nanopillar is about 50 nm in diameter, and the height is 150 nm. As a result, the sample with NPA shows an obvious improvement of photoluminescence (PL), compared with the one without NPA. In addition, we also observed that the PL intensity is increased ~5 times if the active layer is deposited on the nanopillar arrays and covered by a thin metal film of Al. It is noteworthy that the enhancement of photoluminescence could be attributed to the roughness of the surface, the 2D photonic band gap (PBG) effect and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects.

Size-dependent coupling between localized surface plasmons and excitons in silicon nitride matrix

The size-dependent coupling between localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and excitons within a silicon nitride (SiN(x)) matrix is investigated. A strong correlation between the photoluminescence (PL) enhancement and this resonance coupling is observed. From the analysis of the relationship between the dipolar resonance peaks of Ag nanostructures with various sizes and those of PL enhancement, we ascribe the enhancement of PL from the SiN(x) matrix by the addition of Ag nanostructures mainly to the LSP resonance coupling.

Optimization of the electroluminescence from SiNx-based light-emitting devices by modulating the size and morphology of silver nanostructures

A maximal enhancement of ~6.5 times of the external quantum efficiency (EQE) for SiNx-based light-emitting devices (LEDs) is achieved by magnetron sputtering a silver nanostructures layer onto the active matrix. The enhancement of EQE is affected by the dimension and morphology of silver nanostructures, which can be controlled by the sputtering time and the post treatment of rapid thermal annealing. The optimal size of silver nanostructures is about 100 nm in diameter by comparing the integrated electroluminescence intensity under the same input power. The optimization of EQE for SiNx-based LEDs is discussed by considering the contributions of the enhancement of light-extraction efficiency induced by the surface roughening of the front electrode, internal quantum efficiency due to the coupling between excitons and localized surface plasmons, and carrier injection efficiency. Our work may provide an alternative approach for the fabrication of Si-based light sources with promising luminescence efficiency.
