Abstract
Superior mesenteric vein thrombosis (SMVT) is rare but seen in patients with hypercoagulable states.
Prevention of mortality in patients with SMVT requires immediate diagnosis and complex management.
A hierarchical approach to treatment progresses to more aggressive treatment as needed.
Supportive care, medication, and endovascular and/or surgical interventions are available management options.
In patients with underlying conditions, long-term treatment such as anticoagulation must also be initiated.
