Abstract
Climate change is a global concern for agriculture, food security, and human health. It affects several crops and causes drastic losses in yield, leading to severe disturbances in the global economy, environment, and community. The consequences on important staple crops, such as rice, maize, and wheat, will worsen and create food insecurity across the globe. Although various methods of trait improvements in crops are available and are being used, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats and CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) mediated genome manipulation have opened a new avenue for functional genomics and crop improvement. This review will discuss the progression in crop improvement from conventional breeding methods to advanced genome editing techniques and how the CRISPR/Cas9 technology can be applied to enhance the tolerance of the main cereal crops (wheat, rice, and maize) against any harsh climates. CRISPR/Cas endonucleases and their derived genetic engineering tools possess high accuracy, versatile, more specific, and easy to design, leading to climate-smart or resilient crops to combat food insecurity and survive harsh environments. The CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing approach has been applied to various crops to make them climate resilient. This review, supported by a bibliometric analysis of recent literature, highlights the potential target genes/traits and addresses the significance of gene editing technologies in tackling the vulnerable effects of climate change on major staple crops staple such as wheat, rice, and maize.

Abstract
Multiple abiotic stresses like extreme temperatures, water shortage, flooding, salinity, and exposure to heavy metals are confronted by crop plants with changing climatic patterns. Prolonged exposure to these adverse environmental conditions leads to stunted plant growth and development with significant yield loss in crops. CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing tool is being frequently employed to understand abiotic stress-responsive genes. Noteworthy improvements in CRISPR-Cas technology have been made over the years, including upgradation of Cas proteins fidelity and efficiency, optimization of transformation protocols for different crop species, base and prime editing, multiplex gene-targeting, transgene-free editing, and graft-based heritable CRISPR-Cas9 approaches. These developments helped to improve the knowledge of abiotic stress tolerance in crops that could potentially be utilized to develop knock-out varieties and over-expressed lines to tackle the adverse effects of altered climatic patterns. This review summarizes the mechanistic understanding of heat, drought, salinity, and metal stress-responsive genes characterized so far using CRISPR-Cas9 and provides data on potential candidate genes that can be exploited by modern-day biotechnological tools to develop transgene-free genome-edited crops with better climate adaptability. Furthermore, the importance of early-maturing crop varieties to withstand abiotic stresses is also discussed in this review.

Abstract
The impending climate change is threatening the rice productivity of the Asian subcontinent as instances of crop failures due to adverse abiotic and biotic stress factors are becoming common occurrences. CRISPR-Cas9 mediated genome editing offers a potential solution for improving rice yield as well as its stress adaptation. This technology allows modification of plant's genetic elements and is not dependent on foreign DNA/gene insertion for incorporating a particular trait. In this review, we have discussed various CRISPR-Cas9 mediated genome editing tools for gene knockout, gene knock-in, simultaneously disrupting multiple genes by multiplexing, base editing and prime editing the genes. The review here also presents how these genome editing technologies have been employed to improve rice productivity by directly targeting the yield related genes or by indirectly manipulating various abiotic and biotic stress responsive genes. Lately, many countries treat genome-edited crops as non-GMOs because of the absence of foreign DNA in the final product. Thus, genome edited rice plants with improved yield attributes and stress resilience are expected to be accepted by the public and solve food crisis of a major portion of the globe. Abstract
Grain size in rice (Oryza sativa L.) shapes yield and quality, but the underlying molecular mechanism is not fully understood. We functionally characterized GRAIN NUMBER AND LARGE GRAIN SIZE 44 (GNL44), encoding a RING-type protein that localizes to the cytoplasm. The gnl44 mutant has fewer but enlarged grains compared to the wild type. GNL44 is mainly expressed in panicles and developing grains. Grain chalkiness was higher in the gnl44 mutant than in the wild type, short-chain amylopectin content was lower, middle-chain amylopectin content was higher, and appearance quality was worse. The amylose content and gel consistency of gnl44 were lower, and protein content was higher compared to the wild type. Rapid Visco Analyzer results showed that the texture of cooked gnl44 rice changed, and that the taste value of gnl44 was lower, making the eating and cooking quality of gnl44 worse than that of the wild type. We used gnl44, qgl3, and gs3 monogenic and two-gene near-isogenic lines to study the effects of different combinations of genes affecting grain size on rice quality-related traits. Our results revealed additive effects for these three genes on grain quality. These findings enrich the genetic resources available for rice breeders.

Abstract
Phytochromes are receptors for red light (R)/far-red light (FR), which are not only involved in regulating the growth and development of plants but also in mediated resistance to various stresses. Studies have revealed that phytochrome signaling pathways play a crucial role in enabling plants to cope with abiotic stresses such as high/low temperatures, drought, high-intensity light, and salinity. Phytochromes and their components in light signaling pathways can also respond to biotic stresses caused by insect pests and microbial pathogens, thereby inducing plant resistance against them. Given that, this paper reviews recent advances in understanding the mechanisms of action of phytochromes in plant resistance to adversity and discusses the importance of modulating the genes involved in phytochrome signaling pathways to coordinate plant growth, development, and stress responses.

Abstract
It was suggested that the most effective way to improve rice grain yield is to increase the grain number per panicle (GN) through the breeding practice in recent decades. GN is a representative quantitative trait affected by multiple genetic and environmental factors. Understanding the mechanisms controlling GN has become an important research field in rice biotechnology and breeding. The regulation of rice GN is coordinately controlled by panicle architecture and branch differentiation, and many GN-associated genes showed pleiotropic effect in regulating tillering, grain size, flowering time, and other domestication-related traits. It is also revealed that GN determination is closely related to vascular development and the metabolism of some phytohormones. In this review, we summarize the recent findings in rice GN determination and discuss the genetic and molecular mechanisms of GN regulators.
