Functional consequences of convergently evolved microscopic skin features on snake locomotion

The small structures that decorate biological surfaces can significantly affect behavior, yet the diversity of animal-environment interactions essential for survival makes ascribing functions to structures challenging. Microscopic skin textures may be particularly important for snakes and other limbless locomotors, where substrate interactions are mediated solely through body contact. While previous studies have characterized ventral surface features of some snake species, the functional consequences of these textures are not fully understood. Here, we perform a comparative study, combining atomic force microscopy measurements with mathematical modeling to generate predictions that link microscopic textures to locomotor performance. We discover an evolutionary convergence in the ventral skin structures of a few sidewinding specialist vipers that inhabit sandy deserts-an isotropic texture that is distinct from the head-to-tail-oriented, micrometer-sized spikes observed on a phylogenetically broad sampling of nonsidewinding vipers and other snakes from diverse habitats and wide geographic range. A mathematical model that relates structural directionality to frictional anisotropy reveals that isotropy enhances movement during sidewinding, whereas anisotropy improves movement during slithering via lateral undulation of the body. Our results highlight how an integrated approach can provide quantitative predictions for structure-function relationships and insights into behavioral and evolutionary adaptations in biological systems.

Reaction-diffusion in a growing 3D domain of skin scales generates a discrete cellular automaton

We previously showed that the adult ocellated lizard skin colour pattern is effectively generated by a stochastic cellular automaton (CA) of skin scales. We additionally suggested that the canonical continuous 2D reaction-diffusion (RD) process of colour pattern development is transformed into this discrete CA by reduced diffusion coefficients at the borders of scales (justified by the corresponding thinning of the skin). Here, we use RD numerical simulations in 3D on realistic lizard skin geometries and demonstrate that skin thickness variation on its own is sufficient to cause scale-by-scale coloration and CA dynamics during RD patterning. In addition, we show that this phenomenon is robust to RD model variation. Finally, using dimensionality-reduction approaches on large networks of skin scales, we show that animal growth affects the scale-colour flipping dynamics by causing a substantial decrease of the relative length scale of the labyrinthine colour pattern of the lizard skin.

Role of Scale Wettability on Rain-Harvesting Behavior in a Desert-Dwelling Rattlesnake

During storms in the southwestern United States, several rattlesnake species have been observed drinking rain droplets collected on their dorsal scales. This process often includes coiling and flattening of the snake's body, presumably to enhance water collection. Here, we explored this rain-harvesting behavior of the Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) from the perspective of surface science. Specifically, we compared surface wettability and texture, as well as droplet impact and evaporation dynamics on the rattlesnake epidermis with those of two unrelated (control) sympatric snake species (Desert Kingsnake, Lampropeltis splendida, and Sonoran Gopher Snake, Pituophis catenifer). These two control species are not known to show rain-harvesting behavior. Our results show that the dorsal scales of the rattlesnake aid in water collection by providing a highly sticky, hydrophobic surface, which pins the impacting water droplets. We show that this high pinning characteristic stems from surface nanotexture made of shallow, labyrinth-like channels.

Genital coupling, morphology and evolution of male holding structures in Cicadinae (Hemiptera: Cicadidae)

Male and female genitalia include some of the most complex and morphologically diverse structures in Metazoa. Ornamentations in genitalia have been studied in several groups, and a variety of functional roles have been proposed. Although complex features of the genitalia have been observed in internal genitalia in cicadas, their functions have not yet been elucidated. These ornamentations, together with precopulatory sexual selection, make cicadas good models for evolutionary studies on genital coupling. We explore the structural interaction of male and female genitalia in Guyalna bonaerensis (Berg) (Cicadinae) and the morphology of male ornamentations in Cicadinae generally. We group these ornamentations into two traits according to their inferred function: anchoring or gripping. We analyse the theca and vesica of 24 species and perform ancestral trait reconstruction under maximum likelihood and stochastic mapping on a Bayesian tree. Ornamentations of the male vesica and the female seminal ampoule possibly ensure male attachment by working as an active lock to avoid the premature termination of intercourse. These ornamentations emerged independently in different lineages in Cicadinae, reinforcing the suggestion that they are important adaptations to achieve complete copulation. Our results foster questions for the field of sexual selection and associated mechanisms shaping the evolution of male and female genitalia.
