Hydatidosis is a potentially fatal parasitic disease where humans are an accidental host. The cardiac location is due to the development in the heart of the larval form of Taenia Echinococcus granulosus. We present the case of a patient with a history of pulmonary hydatid cysts who presented with atypical chest pain with a huge hydatid cyst of the anterior and lateral wall of the left ventricle of 80/66 mm in diameter responsible of a thinning of the wall of the left ventricle and close relationship with the anterior descending artery and the circumflex artery. The surgery under extracorporeal circulation reconstructed the wall of the left ventricle with a double patch.

Cardiac hydatidosis is a relatively rare complication of echinococcosis, with a potentially life-threatening condition. Here, we reported a large interventricular septal hydatid cyst bulging in the left ventricle accompanied by a huge cervical lamp with recurrent hepatic cysts that underwent cardiac surgery to excise the cyst uneventfully.

Primary Giant Hydatid Cyst of Lumbar Paraspinal Muscles

BACKGROUND

Hydatid cyst disease, commonly caused by Echinococcus granulosus, rarely occurs in paraspinal muscles. Among the few reported cases, the current case is the largest paraspinal hydatid cyst disease ever reported in literature with a review of management of such large lesions.

CASE DESCRIPTION

A 38-year-old male presented with lower back swelling for 1 year. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging scans suggested hydatidosis, following which the patient was taken up for surgery after preoperative medical therapy. En bloc resection was done, and histopathologic examination of the resected specimen confirmed the diagnosis. Postoperative albendazole was also used, and no recurrence was noted at 24 months post operation.

CONCLUSIONS

Hydatid disease should be kept as one of the differential diagnoses for back swelling, especially in endemic regions. Giant-sized hydatid cysts of paraspinal muscles, though rare, cannot be ruled out on clinical ground alone. Thorough history taking and detailed examination should be aided with radiologic investigations like magnetic resonance imaging for an accurate diagnosis. En bloc excision of the cyst combined with preoperative and postoperative medical therapy is an effective method of treating this condition and significantly reducing complication rates.

Cardiac hydatid cyst in the right ventricle: An unusual case at a rare site

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. It affects liver, lungs and rarely other organs. Medical imaging provide the basis for diagnosis. This case report describes an extremely rare location of cardiac hydatid cyst in the right ventricle of the heart. We describe a 23-year-old woman who presented with shortness of breath and productive cough. Laboratory investigations showed marked eosinophilia and anemia. Chest radiography and abdominal ultrasonography were unremarkable. Cardiac computed tomography (CT) identified two well-defined fluid densities in the right ventricle without contrast enhancement. A transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) showed two cystic lesions in the right ventricular cavity that was attached to the interventricular septum. Hydatid cyst was the most likely diagnosis followed by the possibility of a congenital cardiac cyst. An open-heart surgery with cardiac cystectomy was performed. Post-operative analysis of the resected specimens showed multiple hydatid cysts with living scolices of Echinococcus granulosus. The patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged on oral albendazole.
