Determinants of life satisfaction among migrants in South Africa: an analysis of the GCRO's quality of life survey (2009-2021)

Disparities in quality of life by race, gender, and sexual orientation: An intersectional analysis of population-representative data in Gauteng, South Africa

BACKGROUND

South Africa's history of apartheid has led to persistent inequalities. While progress has been made since 1994, disparities in quality of life (QoL) remain, particularly along racial lines. This study examines how race, gender, and sexual orientation intersect to influence QoL in Gauteng - South Africa's most populous and economically vibrant province.

METHODS

Using data from the Gauteng City-Region Observatory's QoL 6 (2020/2021) Survey, we analyzed a sample of 10,760 respondents. We employed inverse probability weighting with regression adjustment (IPWRA) to estimate the Average Treatment Effect (ATE) of race, gender, and sexual minority status on QoL, while controlling for socioeconomic factors.

RESULTS

Significant QoL disparities were observed across intersecting identities. White heterosexual men had the highest QoL scores, while Black sexual minority women had the lowest. After adjusting for covariates, all Black groups exhibited significantly lower QoL scores compared to their White counterparts. The largest gap was between White sexual minority women and Black sexual minority men (ATE: -14.47; 95%CI: -17.18,-11.76). Within the Black population, heterosexual men had significantly higher QoL than heterosexual women (ATE: -0.98; 95%CI: -1.54, -0.42).

CONCLUSIONS

Despite progress since apartheid, substantial QoL disparities persist in Gauteng, primarily along racial lines, particularly in access to services and socio-economic opportunities. The intersectionality of race, gender, and sexual orientation creates distinct vulnerabilities, particularly for Black sexual minority women. These findings suggest that current policies aimed at improving equity may be insufficient. Addressing these disparities requires a multifaceted approach that considers the complex interplay of race, gender, and sexual orientation in shaping QoL.

Prevalence and association of HIV and tuberculosis status in older adults in South Africa: an urgent need to escalate the scientific and political attention to aging and health

Objectives

This study examined the prevalence and sociodemographic factors among older adults with HIV and TB status in South Africa.

Methods

This data was cross-sectional and obtained from the 2019 General Household Surveys in South Africa. Adults 50 years and over with reported HIV and TB status were included (N = 9,180,047). We reported statistical analyses of the descriptive, Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests, and binary logistic regression.

Results

The study has found a prevalence rate of HIV to be 5.3% and TB to be 2.9% among older adults aged 50 years and above in South Africa. However, the study found HIV and TB to be highest among older adults residing in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces. For HIV status, the female gender [AOR = 0.80*, CI 95% = 0.80-0.80] and secondary education [AOR = 0.57, CI 95% = 0.56-0.58] have lower odds of association among older adults with HIV. Regarding TB status, primary education [AOR = 1.08*, CI 95% = 1.06-1.10] and diabetes [AOR = 1.87*, CI 95% = 1.82-1.91] have lower likelihoods of associations among older adults with TB.

Conclusion

There is an urgent need to escalate scientific and political attention to address the HIV/TB burden in older adults and, public health policymakers need to take cognizance of the interdependence of inequality, mobility, and behavioural modification among this high-risk population.

Beyond Borders: Exploring the Quality of Life, Health-Seeking Behavior, and Perceived Barriers in Health Services Utilization Among Sudanese Immigrants in Egypt

BACKGROUND

The detention of immigrants has adverse effects on both their health and their overall quality of life. In migration conditions, there is a notable impact on health-seeking behavior.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to explore the quality of life, health-seeking behavior, and perceived barriers to health services utilization among Sudanese immigrants in Egypt.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study employed a cross-sectional design to fulfill its objectives. A convenience sample comprising 385 Sudanese immigrants post-war was utilized. The researcher employed a structured questionnaire consisting of four parts: socio-demographic data, a quality of life questionnaire, an assessment of health-seeking behavior, and an exploration of the barriers faced by Sudanese immigrant participants in accessing health services.

RESULTS

The study on Sudanese immigrants post-war revealed diverse perceptions of overall quality of life, with 41.6% reporting satisfaction, 32.4% an average state, and 26.0% unsatisfactory conditions. Factors such as gender, educational level, financial situation, and the primary reason for relocating to Egypt significantly influenced these outcomes (p<0.05). Encouragingly, 57.1% of the immigrants exhibited positive health-seeking behavior. Noteworthy barriers to healthcare access included limited awareness of available services (60.5%), competing priorities like work (53.2%), insufficient financial resources (49.6%), and extended waiting times in healthcare facilities (45.5%). These findings underscore the complex interplay of factors affecting the well-being and health-seeking patterns of Sudanese immigrants in their new environment.

CONCLUSION

The research sheds light on key aspects of the well-being of Sudanese immigrants in Egypt, offering insights into their quality of life, health-seeking behavior, and perceived barriers to healthcare. The findings reveal a diverse spectrum of overall quality of life, with over a third expressing satisfaction, while a significant portion reported average or unsatisfactory levels. The study underscores the intricate influence of gender, educational level, financial situation, and the primary reason for immigration on the quality of life. Positive health-seeking behavior was observed in more than half of the participants, yet the identification of barriers to healthcare access signals challenges that warrant attention for enhancing overall health outcomes among this immigrant population. Implementing community-based health education programs plays a pivotal role in empowering immigrant Sudanese individuals in Egypt to make informed health choices and adopt healthy lifestyles.
