Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of virtual learning platforms is on the rise internationally, however, successful integration into existing curricula is a complex undertaking fraught with unintended consequences. Looking beyond medical and pedagogic literature can provide insight into factors affecting the user experience. The technology acceptance model, widely used in software evaluation, can be used to identify barriers and enablers of engagement with virtual learning platforms. Here, the technology acceptance model was used to scaffold the exploration of the factors that influenced students' perceptions of the virtual anatomy platform, Anatomage and how these shaped their intention to use it. METHODS Focus groups identified factors influencing students use of the Anatomage tables. Interventions were rolled out to address these findings, then further focus groups and the technology acceptance model identified how factors including self-efficacy, enjoyment, and social norms influenced students' intention to use the Anatomage table in the future. RESULTS Students raised significant concerns about understanding how to use the Anatomage table. Moreover, students who considered themselves to be poor at using technology perceived the Anatomage table as more complicated to use. The subjective norm of the group significantly altered the perceived ease of use and usefulness of the Anatomage. However, enjoyment had the greatest impact in influencing both perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Indicating that enjoyment is the largest contributing factor in altering technology engagement in healthcare cohorts and has the biggest potential to be manipulated to promote engagement. CONCLUSIONS Focus groups used in tandem with the technology acceptance model provide an effective way to understand student perceptions around technology used in the healthcare curricula. This research determined interventions that promote student engagement with virtual learning platforms, which are important in supporting all healthcare programmes that incorporate technology enhanced learning.

Abstract
According to self-determination theory, the need for competence, autonomy, and relatedness has been associated with intrinsic motivation. Fulfilling basic psychological needs can lead to better learning, academic performance, and well-being. In this study, an anatomy program integrated gamification and drawing methods to explore their influence on basic psychological needs satisfaction and potential learning implications. Basic psychological needs outcomes of sport sciences students were compared to test the effects of the Observe-Reflect-Draw-Edit-Repeat (ORDER) method and gamification (experimental condition) versus a non-ORDER and non-gamified program (control condition). These two different 30-h (7-week) anatomy education programs were implemented at two Spanish public universities with 116 first-year sport sciences students. Pre and post-treatment measurements were collected using the Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale. Statistical analyses included independent samples t-tests, ANCOVAs, and factorial repeated measures ANOVAs 2 × 2 (time × treatment). The gamified ORDER program achieved higher satisfaction scores in basic psychological needs compared to the control group (t = 2.98, p = 0.004, d = 0.54). Additionally, an interaction effect between time and treatment was observed (p = 0.042,η p 2 = 0.038). Treatment and interaction effects were observed for 'autonomy' (p = 0.003,η p 2 = 0.074) and 'competence' satisfaction (p = 0.048,η p 2 = 0.035). A time effect was found for 'relatedness' in the control group, but no significant treatment or interaction effects were identified. The causes of these effects are debated in the study, as well as the limitations. These findings support the notion that students' basic psychological needs are better satisfied in anatomy education with the implementation of this multimethod educational intervention based on ORDER and gamification.

Abstract
Surface anatomy is an important skill for students in preparation for patient care, and peer examination is often used to teach musculoskeletal and surface anatomy. An alternative pedagogical approach is to use bodies represented in artworks. Represented bodies display fictive anatomy, providing students with the opportunity to apply their musculoskeletal knowledge and to think critically when evaluating the anatomical fidelity of a represented body. An elective course at the University of Michigan enabled undergraduate students to analyze the musculoskeletal and surface anatomy depicted in Renaissance artworks. Students traveled to Italy in 2018 (n = 14) and 2022 (n = 15) to analyze the fictive anatomy portrayed in artistic sculptures and musculoskeletal structures depicted in wax anatomy models and sculpted skeletons. In assignments, students were asked to identify musculoskeletal structures as portrayed in the context of represented anatomy created by Italian Renaissance artists and to assess the fidelity of the depicted anatomy. The students also applied their knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy to describe body position and evaluate muscle function in their assessments of the accuracy or inaccuracy of the fictive anatomy. The students reported that evaluating the anatomical fidelity of represented bodies in artworks supported their learning of musculoskeletal and surface anatomy, and that their critical thinking skills improved in the course. Evaluation of the anatomical fidelity of represented bodies in artworks is an effective pedagogical approach that can be implemented in art museums as an adjunctive learning experience to deepen students' musculoskeletal and surface anatomy knowledge and further develop their critical thinking skills.

Abstract
Anatomy serves as a foundational course in physical therapy education, but, due to its early placement in the curriculum, may have limited clinical application at that point of a student's education. Thus, augmenting a standard dissection course with surgical procedures can enhance the clinical relevance and knowledge of the anatomical structures involved in those surgeries. Doctor of Physical Therapy students viewed a variety of cadaveric orthopedic and cardiothoracic surgeries performed by a surgeon. Students unable to participate live viewed the recorded surgeries. Participants completed a 10-point Likert scale survey, developed by the researchers, pre- and post-viewing, on self-efficacy of knowledge, patient intervention and communication. Data analysis revealed improved self-efficacy of knowledge of the anatomy and the surgical procedures, confidence in treating patients undergoing those surgeries, and confidence communicating with surgeons, regardless of whether students viewed the surgeries live or recorded. Students participating in this experience expressed a clear value enhancement on their education. Programs should feel confident that this type of experience in the curriculum, whether live or recorded, will have a positive effect on student self-efficacy as related to the relationships and pertinence of anatomical structures involved in the surgeries, the surgical procedures, treating patients having undergone those surgeries, and interprofessional communication.

Abstract
Anatomical body painting has traditionally been utilized to support learner engagement and understanding of surface anatomy. Learners apply two-dimensional representations of surface markings directly on to the skin, based on the identification of key landmarks. Esthetically satisfying representations of musculature and viscera can also be created. However, established body painting approaches do not typically address three-dimensional spatial anatomical concepts. Haptic Surface Painting (HSP) is a novel activity, distinct from traditional body painting, and aims to develop learner spatial awareness. The HSP process is underpinned by previous work describing how a Haptico-visual observation and drawing method can support spatial, holistic, and collaborative anatomy learning. In HSP, superficial and underlying musculoskeletal and vascular structures are located haptically by palpation. Transparent colors are then immediately applied to the skin using purposive and cross-contour drawing techniques to produce corresponding visual representations of learner observation and cognition. Undergraduate students at a United Kingdom medical school (n = 7) participated in remote HSP workshops and focus groups. A phenomenological study of learner perspectives identified four themes from semantic qualitative analysis of transcripts: Three-dimensional haptico-visual exploration relating to learner spatial awareness of their own anatomy; cognitive freedom and accessibility provided by a flexible and empowering learning process; altered perspectives of anatomical detail, relationships, and clinical relevance; and delivery and context, relating to curricular integration, session format, and educator guidance. This work expands the pedagogic repertoire of anatomical body painting and has implications for anatomy educators seeking to integrate innovative, engaging, and effective learning approaches for transforming student learning.

Abstract
There are concerns among healthcare practitioners about poor anatomical knowledge among recent healthcare graduates. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework developed to enhance students' experience of learning and help students to become motivated learners. This scoping review identified whether UDL has been utilized in third level healthcare education and if so, whether it had been used to enhance student motivation to study anatomy. Seven online databases were searched for studies reporting the use of UDL in the curricula of medical, dental, occupational therapy (OT) or speech and language therapy (SLT) programs. Studies were screened for eligibility with set inclusion criteria. Data were extracted and analyzed. Analysis revealed that UDL was not specifically mentioned in any of the studies thus there are no published studies on UDL being formally applied in healthcare education. However, the authors identified 33 publications that described teaching methods which aligned with UDL in anatomy curricula and a thematic analysis yielded four main themes relating to teaching strategies being employed. Universal design for learning was not mentioned specifically, indicating that educators may not be aware of the educational framework, although they appeared to be utilizing aspects of it in their teaching. The review revealed that there is a lack of research concerning the anatomy education of OT and SLT students. The role of UDL in enhancing motivation to learn anatomy in medical, dental, OT and SLT programs has yet to be explored.

Abstract
It is generally well-known that the medical school curriculum is becoming increasingly busy, more so with the COVID-19 pandemic. By itself, urology education will need to adapt to meet the changing circumstances, but it remains uncertain on how best to address this need. In this article, we will discuss several methods that will allow institutions to ease and overcome pressures using modern educational techniques. These methods can be classified based on the aspect of the curriculum they seek to improve, namely core-curricular teaching, anatomy training, virtual reality, and electronic learning opportunities. We anticipate that the implementation of these suggestions will enhance medical school teaching.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The training of near-peer (NP) teachers and junior faculty instructors received major attention as a possible solution for the shortage of experienced anatomy instructors in faculties of medicine and health professions. Several studies described the training of NP teachers and junior instructors (≤ 2 years of teaching experience) using various methods. However, few publications include On the Job Training (OJT), which enables reflection and performance evaluation and encourages professionals to cope with their blind spots. Previous publications describing OJT did not include formal observation of the NP teacher or junior instructor. Therefore, this study aimed to present a novel approach to OJT inclusion during prosection laboratories based on the Lewinian experiential model. METHODS Eight physical therapy (PT) graduates were recruited as junior anatomy instructors into the prosection laboratories. All participated in a unique training program during two consecutive academic years (2017, 2018) and received OJT during the teaching sessions. Two questionnaires were filled out to evaluate the educational impact of the training program. Eighty-three first-year PT students participated in prosection laboratories in anatomy taught by junior instructors, and filled out a questionnaire evaluating the performance of both junior and senior instructors. In addition, we compared the final grades in anatomy obtained by students taught by senior instructors to the grades of those taught by junior instructors. RESULTS Each junior anatomy instructor participated in four OJT sessions. Based on self-reported measures, all professional and didactic aspects of the training program received a median score of 4.5 or higher on a five-point Likert scale. Students obtained similar grades in anatomy when taught by junior instructors compared with senior ones, and were similarly satisfied from the teaching performance of both senior and junior anatomy instructors. CONCLUSIONS OJT is applicable in a small-sized PT program facing a shortage of anatomy instructors. Including junior anatomy instructors in prosection laboratories for PT students is a viable solution to the shortage of experienced anatomy instructors. Further study, involving a larger cohort with a longer follow up will strengthen the preliminary results presented here.

Abstract
This qualitative and quantitative study offered students the opportunity to participate in engaging and inspiring activities "outside the classroom", to extend their experience and knowledge of surface anatomy. Medical and health science students benefit from studying surface anatomy as it is relevant to their future professions that deal with patients and clients. Surface anatomy is an essential part of the learning process that allows students an opportunity to identify anatomical structures on living people and to develop their palpation and tactile skills for physical examinations of patients. Body painting is a student-centred, engaging, and motivating approach to learn surface anatomy in anatomy practical classes. In this study, anatomy learning was extended "beyond the classroom" through extra-curricular body painting projects. These projects were run by student teams consisting of a student model, student artists (4-5), and a student photographer, under the direction of the chief investigator. A total of sixteen body painting projects were carried out from 2010 to show the skeletal system, the muscular system, pregnancy, respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, and the neurovascular systems of the entire body. A SurveyMonkey of 31/41 active participants suggested that participants enjoyed the projects (94-100%), found them relevant to their future profession (80-87%), and considered them to assist with deeper understanding (94%) and long-term memory (93%) of anatomy. Learning anatomy outside the classroom through extra-curricular body painting projects was a successful way to engage, motivate, and inspire participants and first year anatomy students to study surface anatomy and to develop their physical examination skills.

Abstract
To become skilled physicians, medical students must master surface anatomy. However, the study of surface anatomy is less emphasized in medical and allied health science curricula, and the time devoted to direct engagement with the human body is limited. This scoping review was designed to answer one research question: "What are the elements and strategies that are effective in teaching surface anatomy?" The review was performed using a five-stage scoping review framework, including research question identification, relevant study identification, study selection, data charting, and result collating and reporting. Three databases were searched using two search terms combined with a Boolean operator: "teaching" and "surface anatomy." The initial pool of 3,294 sources was assessed for duplication, and study eligibility was evaluated using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were abstracted from 26 original articles by one researcher and verified by two other researchers. A thematic analysis was performed, and several elements of effective teaching strategies for surface anatomy were identified, namely contextualized teaching, embracing experiential learning, and learning facilitation. This review revealed that a multimodal approach was most commonly used in surface anatomy instruction. Hence, future research should explore the effectiveness of multimodal teaching strategies that adopt the three aforementioned primary elements of effective teaching in an authentic learning environment. It is pertinent to clarify the effectiveness of these teaching strategies by evaluating their impact on student learning, organizational changes, and benefits to other stakeholders.

Abstract
Introduction Teaching human anatomy to produce deeper understandings and knowledge retention in learners requires meaningful, engaging, and practical activities. Previous studies identify that most students who participated in body painting (BP) reported improved understanding of surface anatomy (SA). This study investigates the key factors underpinning how BP helps students learn SA. Methods The study involved an explanatory mixed-methods approach. Towards the end of an anatomy course, a survey was administered to three cohorts of first-year chiropractic, osteopathy, and Chinese medicine students and second-year biomedical sciences students over 3 years (n = 311; response rate = 30%). The survey assessed the effectiveness of BP as a hands-on, group-based approach for learning SA in practical class. Three student focus groups (n = 13) explored the key survey findings. Results Overall, 72% of student respondents reported BP activities helped them learn SA "quite a bit" or "very much". Multivariate analysis identified students found BP helped them learn SA by "remembering the position of the bones, joints, muscles, actions and insertions" (POR = 5.7; P < 0.001); "integrating textbook and other knowledge on a real live person" (POR = 2.4; P = 0.027); and "achieving a deeper understanding of SA" (POR = 5.2; P < 0.001). The qualitative findings describe specifically how BP helps students learn, understand, and remember SA. Conclusions The findings show the majority of students believed BP benefitted their learning of SA through enhancing engagement in self-directed classroom and out-of-hours learning opportunities, deeper understandings of form and function, retention of knowledge, and practical physical examination experiences palpating the variations in form between individuals.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic had a huge impact on the learning and teaching processes, particularly in healthcare education and training, because of the principal position of the cutting-edge student-patient interaction. Replacing the traditional form of organization and implementation of knowledge evaluation with its web-based equivalent on an e-learning platform optimizes the whole didactic process not only for the unit carrying it out but, above all, for students. This research is focused on the effectiveness of the application of e-learning for computer-based knowledge evaluation and optimizing exam administration for students of medical sciences. The proposed approach is considered in two categories: from the perspective of the providers of the evaluation process, that is, the teaching unit; and the recipients of the evaluation process, that is, the students.

Abstract
Introduction: Human anatomy is a core subject that poses a great academic challenge for students who are admitted to the health sciences undergraduate degree programs.
Objective: To know the socio-academic profile of first-year students of several health sciences undergraduate programs and to assess the association between, on the one hand, academic performance during secondary education, study habits and performance in the university admission science test, and, on the other, academic performance in the human anatomy course.
Materials and methods: Cross-sectional correlational study conducted in 2018. The study population consisted of 306 first-year students enrolled in 7 health sciences undergraduate programs offered by the Faculty of Medical Sciences of a public university in Santiago de Chile, Chile. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine the correlation between the variables of interest. Also, a multiple linear regression analysis was performed to establish the factors significantly associated with the final grade obtained in the course. A level of significance of p<0.05 was considered.
Results: The mean age of the participants was 19.8 years, 98.6% were single, and 65.3% were female. A significant association was observed between the final grade obtained in the course and the score obtained in the university admission test (p=0.000) and the high school grade point average (p=0.001); however, this association was not significant with the variables considered as study habits.
Conclusion: Academic performance in the human anatomy course was associated with the students’ prior knowledge, but not with their study habits. Thus, educational interventions in this university should focus more on leveling students’ knowledge, rather than on optimizing their study habits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Multiple-choice questions (MCQ) in the anatomical sciences are often perceived to be targeting recall of facts and regurgitation of trivial details. Moving away from this assumption requires the design of purposeful multiple-choice questions that focus on higher-order cognitive functions as opposed to rote memorization. In order to develop such questions, it was important to first understand the strategies that students use in solving multiple-choice questions. Using the think-aloud protocol, this study seeks to understand strategies students use in solving multiple-choice questions. Specifically, it seeks to uncover patterns in the reasoning process and tactics used when solving higher and lower order MCQ in anatomy. The research also provides insights onto how these strategies influence the student's probability of answering questions correctly. METHODS Multiple-choice questions were created at three levels of cognitive functioning based on the ideas, connections, extensions (ICE) learning framework. The think-aloud protocol was used to unravel problem-solving strategies used by 92 undergraduate anatomy students as they solved multiple-choice questions. RESULTS Sixteen strategies were identified through the oral and written think-alouds that students used to solve MCQ. Eleven of these have been described and supported by the literature, while the rest were utilized by our students when solving MCQ in anatomy. Domain-specific strategies of visualizing and recalling had the highest use. Personal connection was a strategy that allowed students to achieve success in all ICE levels in the oral think-alouds and in the I and E levels in the written think-alouds. CONCLUSIONS This research argues that it is upon us as educators to make learning visible to our students, specifically through the use of think-alouds. It also raises awareness that when educators facilitate the process of students making personal connections, it aids students in new knowledge being integrated effectively and retrieved accurately.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with hematologic malignancies and stem cell transplant recipients are at increased risk for infections because of their prolonged periods of profound neutropenia. Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) can result in lengthy hospitalizations, increased healthcare costs, and increased morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVES The aim of this comprehensive educational training program was to reduce CLABSI rates by focusing on the standardized practices associated with use, care, and maintenance of all types of central lines. METHODS A pretest was administered to nursing staff. Based on the responses, an education program was then created. The program consisted of a comprehensive two-hour class using different modalities of teaching, including standardized practices associated with central line care. FINDINGS The comprehensive education program was effective in standardizing education and improving knowledge gaps, resulting in the reduction of CLABSI rates. Overall, staff knowledge surrounding central line care and maintenance increased by 16%. In addition, no CLABSI events have been reported on the unit from the time of program initiation.

Abstract
The disciplines of biosciences included in the curricula of a nursing degree represent a daunting but crucial type of knowledge that a well-prepared nurse should acquire. Given the importance and the objective difficulties of these courses, nursing students experience anxiety, especially for the anatomy course. This anxiety and the related rate of exam failures lead professors to analyze their teaching approach, by diversifying the lecturing methods. The aim of our study was to test the use of a virtual dissection table (DT) during the anatomy lectures of a nursing course, evaluating the anxiety level before the exam and evaluating the exam score. The feedback of the evaluated student population was positive overall. The integration of the DT in anatomy lectures improved the learning performance and mostly enhanced the self-confidence of the first year nursing students.

Abstract
First-year Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students entering a problem-based learning (PBL) program are faced with a number of pedagogical challenges, including the development of self-directed learning skills, resource unfamiliarity, and group dynamics. These challenges can make learning anatomy in a self-directed manner less efficient. Prematriculation introduction of strategies to improve anatomy learning may help prepare students for a rigorous DPT program and improve anatomy learning efficiency. The present study describes a 2-day anatomy workshop offered to incoming students before a DPT program was initiated. Knowledge acquired during both days of the workshop resulted in statistically significant improvements in anatomy postquiz scores for each corresponding prequiz (P < 0.001 for lower and upper limb quizzes). Workshop participants survey responses demonstrated that anatomy confidence and PBL preparedness increased at distinct intervals following the workshop and was significantly higher than controls after the first semester (P < 0.01 for anatomy confidence and PBL preparedness). Multivariate regression analyses demonstrated statistically significant relationships between semester anatomy practical scores and workshop participation (P = 0.03 for practical 1 and P = 0.049 for practical 2) and undergraduate grade point average (P < 0.001 for practical 1 and P = 0.03 for practical 2). First-year DPT students reported the anatomy workshop to be a valuable experience for learning strategies to improve anatomy self-efficacy. An introductory anatomy workshop is an effective strategy to improve self-directed anatomy learning efficiency before the start of a rigorous DPT program.

Abstract
Clinical image interpretation is one of the most challenging activities for students when they first arrive at medical school. Interpretation of clinical images concerns the identification of three-dimensional anatomical features in two-dimensional cross-sectional computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images in axial, sagittal and coronal planes, and the recognition of structures in ultrasound and plain radiographs. We propose that a cognitive transition occurs when initially attempting to interpret clinical images, which requires reconciling known 3D structures with previously unknown 2D visual information. Additionally, we propose that this 3D-2D transition is required when integrating an understanding of superficial 2D surface landmarks with an appreciation of underlying 3D anatomical structures during clinical examinations.Based on educational theory and research findings, we recommend that 3D and 2D approaches should be simultaneously combined within radiological and surface anatomy education. With a view to this, we have developed and utilised digital and art-based methods to support the 3D-2D transition. We outline our observations and evaluations, and describe our practical implementation of these approaches within medical curricula to serve as a guide for anatomy educators. Furthermore, we define the theoretical underpinnings and evidence supporting the integration of 3D-2D approaches and the value of our specific activities for enhancing the clinical image interpretation and surface anatomy learning of medical students.

Abstract
Traditionally, cadaver dissection and didactic lectures have formed the mainstay of teaching gross anatomy, but, apathy of the learners toward didactic lectures and reduction in the time allotted for teaching anatomy have necessitated adoption of interactive teaching methods that require lesser student contact time. In this study, for two consecutive years, first-year medical students were taught selected gross anatomy topics using Interactive Lecture in the Dissection Hall (ILDH). Instead of discarding the traditional methods, ILDH combined the two into a single, cohesive, interactive session, to teach the topic through multiple, short, segments of lecture alternating with interactive demonstration on the specimen. This method emerged by combining the insight gained from the newer teaching methods and reasoning from the cognitive load theory and contiguity principle. Students' performance after ILDH was assessed by a test and was compared with the performance after conventional method of teaching. Students' perception toward ILDH was assessed by a questionnaire. Students perceived that ILDH not only helped them in understanding the concepts better (97.7%), but, was also a better learning experience (99.2%). Majority felt that ILDH should be made an integral part of teaching anatomy (97.7%). Students' performance in the test after the unified approach of ILDH was significantly better than with the split-source format of conventional methods. Students' satisfaction, improved scores, and time efficiency indicate that ILDH may be an optimum method for teaching selected topics in anatomy.

Abstract
Historical loss of staff and teaching resources in Cambodia has resulted in significant challenges to anatomy education. Small group anatomy teaching opportunities are limited. A visit to Cambodia by a teaching team from the University of Melbourne in 2010 demonstrated it was possible to implement well-resourced anatomy workshops for this purpose. However, continuation of the workshop program was inhibited by the limited number of local teaching staff. In 2015, another team from the University of Melbourne returned to Cambodia to implement anatomy workshops that incorporated peer tutoring. The objective was to improve teacher-to-student ratios and to demonstrate that interactive anatomy workshops could be delivered successfully despite low staff numbers. The anatomy workshops were attended by 404 students of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Midwifery at the University of Puthisastra. Medical students were invited to act as peer tutors for nursing students. A five-point Likert scale questionnaire was used to determine student satisfaction with both the workshops and peer tutoring. The overwhelming majority were positive about the workshops and keen for them to continue. Almost all medical students who acted as peer tutors agreed or strongly agreed that this role increased their anatomical knowledge (98%) and confidence (94%). Most nursing students agreed or strongly agreed with statements that they would like peer tutoring to continue (94%) and that they would like to be peer tutors themselves (88%). This report demonstrates that peer tutoring could be an effective tool in educational settings where poor staff-to-student ratios limit delivery of interactive workshops.

Abstract
Anatomy is traditionally regarded as a difficult, non-motivating course involving a large body of theoretical and practical content, and it is often associated with high levels of dropout and failure. Given the relevance of the topic, we propose an alternative active multisensory teaching tool consisting of the construction of a low-fidelity anatomical model assembled into an articulated equine skeleton. Model construction and assembly assists students in the recognition of the topography and anatomical boundaries of the equine abdominal digestive system. Digestive system organs (liver, pancreas, stomach, small and large intestines) were constructed using common, easily available materials, such as newspaper, balloons, laminated rubber sheets, and polyethylene cylinders. The method described in this study is a low-cost, user-friendly teaching tool that is potentially applicable across different academic disciplines and that can also be used to construct models of other systems and species. However, it should be combined with other anatomy teaching methods because it does not provide detailed representation of specific digestive system organ features.

Abstract
Eight faculties in South Africa offer undergraduate physiotherapy training with gross anatomy included as a basis for clinical practice. Little information exists about anatomy education for this student body. A 42-question peer-reviewed survey was distributed to physiotherapy gross anatomy course coordinators in all the eight faculties. Seven coordinators from six (75%) of the universities responded. Two respondents' data from the same university were pooled. Collected data show that staff qualifications and experience varied widely and high to average staff to student ratios exist between faculties. Direct anatomy teaching duration was 12.3 (SD ±5.2) weeks per semester. Total number of weeks in courses per faculty was 27.6 (SD ±5.7) varying widely between institutions. Calculable direct contact anatomy hours ranged between 100 and 308 with a mean of 207.6 (SD ±78.1). Direct contact hours in lectures averaged 3.9 (SD ±1.6) per week and the average direct contact hours in practical sessions were 3.5 (SD ±1.8) per week. Dissection, prosection, plastinated models, surface anatomy, and e-learning were available across faculties. Ancillary modalities such as vertical integration and inter-professional learning were in use. All faculties had multiple-choice questions, spot tests, and short examination questions. Half had viva-voce examinations and one had additional long questions assessment. Students evaluated teaching performance in five faculties. Four faculties were reviewing anatomy programs to consider implementing changes to anatomy curriculum or pedagogy. The findings highlighted disparity between programs and also identified the need for specific guidelines to develop a unified South African gross anatomy course for physiotherapy students.

Abstract
Living anatomy is gaining increasing popularity as an alternative to the use of preserved cadaver specimens in musculoskeletal anatomy teaching. This article describes the development of a garment painted with musculoskeletal structures as an alternative to body painting. Garments offer some advantages over traditional body painting in anatomy teaching. The technique can be used across different disciplines, enhances students' ability to identify anatomic structures in living bodies, and provides insights into the topography of one or more body systems at the same time. The fact that garments are amenable to palpation by large groups of students with no damage to the painting favors repeated use in hands-on wet labs. Garments such as the one described in this article introduce a novel approach to interdisciplinary teaching and learning, which can be combined with traditional anatomy teaching methods. The first garment produced depicts part of the equine musculoskeletal system. Steps in garment construction are highlighted and indications, advantages, and limitations of the method discussed.
