Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has affected physical and occupational therapist education in various ways. OBJECTIVE This study investigated whether the pandemic changed clinical placement, thus influencing the clinical competence of physical and occupational therapists at a hospital in Japan. METHODS Eleven therapists (seven physical and four occupational) participated in this study in April 2021. Clinical placement teaching methods were surveyed using an online questionnaire. The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), comprising attitudinal and technical items, was used to examine clinical competence. The results were calculated as the sum of the attitudinal and technical scores, and the ratios of these scores to the full score were compared using a paired-sample Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS During the pandemic, some schools implemented shortened practical clinical placements. The substituted classes included online-only classes and combined online and face-to-face classes. Regarding clinical competence, scores on the OSCE were mostly high. The median proportion of the total attitudinal score to the perfect score was 100% for all three items (range-of-motion test, muscle strength test, Stroke Impairment Assessment Set). The median proportion of the total technical score to the perfect score ranged from 56.7% to 76.7% for the three items. The ratio of the total attitudinal score to the full score was significantly higher than that of the total technical score to the full score (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Most clinical placements were canceled or partially administered through online learning during the pandemic. This decrease in clinical placements did not affect newly recruited physical and occupational therapists' clinical competence.

Abstract
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has considerably impacted the clinical education and training of health workers globally, causing severe disruptions to learning environments in healthcare facilities and limiting the acquisition of new clinical skills. Consequently, urgent adaptation measures, including simulation training and e-learning, have been implemented to mitigate the adverse effects of clinical education. This scoping review aims to assess the impact of COVID-19 on medical education and training, examine the implemented adaptation measures, and evaluate their effectiveness in improving health workers' education and training during the pandemic. Methods: Employing the PRISMA-ScR framework and Arksey and O'Malley's methodological guidance, we conducted a scoping review, systematically searching PubMed, medRxiv, Google, and DuckDuckGo databases to account for the grey literature. The search included studies published between 1 December 2019 and 13 October 2021, yielding 10,323 results. Of these, 88 studies focused on health worker education and training during the pandemic. Results: Our review incorporated 31,268 participants, including physicians, medical trainees, nurses, paramedics, students, and health educators. Most studies (71/88, 81%) were conducted in high-income and lower-middle-income countries. The pandemic's effects on health workers' clinical skills and abilities have necessitated training period extensions in some cases. We identified several positive outcomes from the implementation of simulation training and e-learning as adaptation strategies, such as enhanced technical and clinical performance, increased confidence and comfort, and an expanded global educational outreach. Conclusions: Despite challenges like insufficient practical experience, limited interpersonal interaction opportunities, and internet connectivity issues, simulation training, e-learning, and virtual training have proven effective in improving clinical education and training during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further research is required to bolster preparedness for future pandemics or similar situations.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cytopathology training at an international level. An anonymous online questionnaire was distributed by members of the international cytopathological community to medical practitioners in cytopathology. The survey explored perceived changes in cytology workload and workflow during the pandemic, and its effect on both non-cervical and cervical cytology reporting and teaching. A total of 82 responses were received from seven countries. Approximately half of the respondents reported a decrease in the number and range of cytology cases during the pandemic. Nearly half (47%) saw a reduction in the opportunity to co-report with consultants/attendings, and 72% of the respondents reported that their consultants/attendings were working remotely during the pandemic. Another 34% of the respondents were redeployed for 3 weeks to 1 year, with 96% stating that this period was only partially compensated for during their training, if at all. The pandemic negatively affected the opportunity to report cervical cytology, perform fine needle aspirations, and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings. Most respondents (69%) saw a decrease in the amount and quality (52%) of face-to-face departmental cytology teaching, whereas remote departmental teaching improved in amount (54%) and quality (49%). Almost half (49%) reported that cytology teaching in the regional, national, and international settings increased in both amount and quality. The pandemic catalysed many changes in cytopathology training, affecting the trainees' exposure to cases, the use of remote reporting, consultant/attending working practices, redeployment, and local as well as external teaching.

Abstract
CONTEXT The COVID-19 pandemic caused the largest disruption to graduate medical education in modern history. The danger associated with SARS-CoV-2 necessitated a paradigm shift regarding the fundamental approach to the education of medical residents and fellows. Whereas prior work has examined the effect of the pandemic on residents' experiences during training, the effect of the pandemic on academic performance of critical care medicine (CCM) fellows is not well understood. OBJECTIVES This study examined the relationship between CCM fellow's lived experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and performance on in-training examinations. METHODS This mixed-methods study consisted of a quantitative retrospective analysis of critical care fellows' in-training examination scores and a qualitative, interview-based phenomenological examination of fellows' experiences during the pandemic while training in a single large academic hospital in the American Midwest. Quantitative: Prepandemic (2019 and 2020) and intrapandemic (2021 and 2022) in-training examination scores were analyzed utilizing an independent samples t test to determine whether a significant change occurred during the pandemic. Qualitative: Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with CCM fellows exploring their lived experiences during the pandemic and their perception of the effect on their academic performance. Transcribed interviews were analyzed for thematic patterns. These themes were coded and categorized, and subcategories were developed as indicated during the analysis. The identified codes were then analyzed for thematic connections and apparent patterns. Relationships between themes and categories were analyzed. This process was continued until a coherent picture could be assembled from the data to answer the research questions. Analysis was performed from a phenomenological perspective with an emphasis on interpretation of the data from the participants' perspectives. RESULTS Quantitative: Fifty-one in-training examination scores from 2019 to 2022 were obtained for analysis. Scores from 2019 to 2020 were grouped as prepandemic scores, while scores from 2021 to 2022 were grouped as intrapandemic scores. Twenty-four prepandemic and 27 intrapandemic scores were included in the final analysis. A significant difference was found between mean total prepandemic and intrapandemic in-service examination scores (t 49=2.64, p=0.01), with mean intrapandemic scores being 4.5 points lower than prepandemic scores (95 % CI, 1.08-7.92). Qualitative: Interviews were conducted with eight CCM fellows. Thematic analysis of the qualitative interviews revealed three main themes: psychosocial/emotional effects, effects on training, and effects on health. The factors that most effected participants' perceptions of their training were burnout, isolation, increased workload, decreased bedside teaching, decreased formal academic training opportunities, decreased procedural experience, a lack of an external reference point for normal training in CCM, fear of spreading COVID-19, and neglect of personal health during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS In-training examination scores decreased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic for CCM fellows in this study. The fellows in this study reported perceived effects of the pandemic on their psychosocial/emotional well-being, medical training, and health.

Abstract
Introduction The goal of the study is to assess burnout among postgraduate medical trainees, evaluate the association with sociodemographic features and offer potential wellness strategies for leaders responsible for their education, training, management, and wellbeing. Methods The Oldenburg Burnout Inventory was used. The web-based, voluntary, and anonymous survey was sent to postgraduate medical trainees from various specialties and all years of training in a tertiary medical center in Beirut, Lebanon. Additional questions were added after the survey regarding reporting channels for burnout and possible interventions for wellbeing. Results The total number of valid responses are 188. The prevalence rates of high burnout are 37.2% for disengagement and 51.1% for exhaustion. There is a significant difference between the mean of exhaustion and gender (p = 0.003). There is a significant difference between the mean of disengagement and year of training (p = 0.017). There is a significant difference between the mean of exhaustion and year of training (p = 0.029). There is a significant difference between the frequency of disengagement and year of training (p = 0.027). Conclusion The study reveals how postgraduate medical training program is impacted by the existing challenges from social, health, and financial standpoint, along with the instabilities encountered such as multiple wars and port blast in 2020 and how these variables aggravate burnout. Burnout severely impacts the education and training of PGMT and promoting wellbeing can help reverse the process. Findings contribute to establishing effective strategic interventions for leaders in healthcare management to adopt.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The authors examined associations between stressors and burnout in trainee doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS An anonymous online questionnaire including 42 questions on general and pandemic-specific stressors, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Health Services Survey (MBI-HSS), was sent to 1000 randomly selected trainee doctors in North-West England. Main outcomes were burnout scores that were stratified into Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalisation (DP), and reduced Personal Accomplishment (PA) and associations between stressors and burnout using stepwise regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 362 complete responses were received giving a response rate of 37%. Mean scores for EE, DP, and PA derived from the MBI-HSS were 27.7, 9.8, and 34.3 respectively. Twenty-three stressors were found to be associated with burnout dimensions. "Increase in workload and hours due to COVID-19," "Poor leadership and management in the National Health Service," and "Not feeling valued" were found to have strong associations with burnout dimensions. Only "Not confident in own abilities" was found to be associated with all burnout dimensions. CONCLUSIONS Associations with burnout were found to be identified in a range of work, pandemic, and non-work-related stressors, supporting the need for multi-level interventions to mitigate burnout.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout is an individualized response to imbalances between job demands and resources that has predominantly been evaluated with the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). There are other instruments not validated among healthcare providers that may be comparable to the MBI. Utilizing alternative measurements can allow researchers to assess wellness with a larger array of questions. OBJECTIVE We explored differences between the MBI- Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS [MP]) and Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) in evaluating emotional exhaustion (EE)/exhaustion and depersonalization (DP)/disengagement. METHODS We administered the MBI-HSS (MP) and OLBI to United States (US) radiology trainees during three,1-month intervals in April 2018, October 2018, and April 2019. Student's T-tests or ANOVA was used to evaluate differences between demographic groups and burnout scores in the MBI-HSS (MP) and OBLI. Non-inferiority analysis was completed to evaluate if the OBLI was not inferior to the MBI-HSS (MP) in how its subscales measure exhaustion and disengagement. The MBI-HSS (MP) subtotals for EE and DP were compared with the OLBI scores for exhaustion and disengagement using two-tailed paired T-tests for each trainee. RESULTS Of 2823 trainees emailed, 770 (27.3%) responded. The mean EE Maslach score was 21/54, and the mean DP Maslach score was 8/30. The average OBLI exhaustion and disengagement score was 2.38 and 2.22, respectively. Comparative analysis of completed MBI-HSS (MP) and OLBI subscales yielded no significant difference between the EE/exhaustion (t(496)=1.038; p=0.30) or DP/disengagement (t(498)=0.084; p=0.933) subscales. CONCLUSIONS Our national study of radiology trainees demonstrated that the OLBI was not inferior in assessing exhaustion and disengagement to the EE and DP subscales of the MBI-HSS (MP).

Abstract
Background A Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis was performed to understand the status quo of education and training in radiation protection (RP) and to develop a coordinated European approach to RP training needs based on stakeholder consensus and existing activities in the field. Fourteen team members represented six European professional societies, one European voluntary organisation, two international healthcare organisations and five professions, namely: Medical Physicists; Nuclear Medicine Physicians; Radiologists; Radiation Oncologists and Radiographers. Four subgroups analysed the “Strengths”, “Weaknesses”, “Opportunities” and “Threats” related to E&T in RP developed under previous European Union (EU) programmes and on the Guidelines on Radiation Protection Education and Training of Medical Professionals in the EU.
Results Consensus agreement identified four themes for strengths and opportunities, namely: (1) existing structures and training recommendations; (2) RP training needs assessment and education & training (E&T) model(s) development; (3) E&T dissemination, harmonisation, and accreditation; (4) financial supports. Weaknesses and Threats analysis identified two themes: (1) awareness and prioritisation at a national/global level and (2) awareness and prioritisation by healthcare professional groups and researchers. Conclusions A lack of effective implementation of RP principles in daily practice was identified. EuRnR strategic planning needs to consider processes at European, national and local levels. Success is dependent upon efficient governance structures and expert leadership. Financial support is required to allow the stakeholder professional agencies to have sufficient resources to achieve a pan European radiation protection training network which is sustainable and accredited across multiple national domains.

Abstract
Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic created major challenges across society, healthcare provision and also for those delivering healthcare education programmes. Clinical placements were disrupted and, in many incidences cancelled. Higher education institutions were required to move completely to online delivery methods with little notice. This created significant additional workload, stress and the need to learn new skills at a time of great uncertainty. This study explored the risks of burnout in academic radiographers during the first 12 months of the pandemic. Methods A survey was circulated using SurveyMonkey™ via personal, national and international networks, including the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS), to reach as many academic radiographers as possible. Disengagement and exhaustion were measured using the Oldenburg burnout inventory. Descriptive statistics and a one-way ANOVA were used to analyse the quantitative data using STATA V16 (Statacorp, TA). Results 533 academic radiographers responded to the survey from 43 different countries. Mean disengagement was in the medium range and exhaustion was high for the total dataset. In a subset of countries with 10 or more responses, there was significant variation between countries, with the UK having highest mean exhaustion score and the UK, Ireland and France sharing the highest mean disengagement score. In the total dataset, 86% agreed workload had increased during the pandemic and 35% had considered leaving academia in the last year. Conclusion These data demonstrate the stark reality of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on academic radiographers’ workload, wellbeing, and intention to leave their roles. Implications for practice COVID-19 has had a significant impact on academic radiographers and this study highlights the urgent need for remedial measures to better support academic radiographers in order to ensure a sufficient, and sustainable workforce.

Abstract
Background: Studies in the recent decades show that the medical profession has a high risk to develop burnout due to constant exposure to mental and physical suffering or death. The pandemic period induced additional stress for healthcare professionals due to the likelihood of a high rate of infection, long working shifts, using protective equipment, staying away from family, implementing new medical procedures. The present study is focusing on assessing the prevalence of burnout among physicians working in the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic, and discovering the main factors associated with burnout syndrome among the population of physicians. Material and methods: A systematic review was conducted by searching PubMed, Wiley, and Google Scholar in November 2021. A total of 35 studies were eligible for the evaluation. Results: The samples ranged from 39 to 3071 physicians, and the overall burnout ranged from 14.7% to 90.4%. Sociodemographic characteristics associated with a high prevalence of burnout were the female gender, less experienced, not having children, and single marital status, associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, and stress in the female gender. The highest level of burnout among all the studies was 90.4% on a sample of physicians from the Republic of Korea, 80.2% among psychiatrists in Saudi Arabia, followed by a study in Ireland with a 77% level of burnout among senior and specialist physicians, and 74.7% prevalence of burnout for emergency physicians in USA. Conclusions: During the pandemic, the factors that contribute to burnout are the lack of personal protective equipment and the violence of issues related to organizational health; the high prevalence of burnout symptoms is associated with anxiety, depression, and stress.

Abstract
The Coronavirus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused a dramatic shift in radiology resident education. Primarily, physical distancing prompted a general transition to virtual learning. Common changes made by radiology residency programs included virtual rounds and readouts, the use of simulation technology, and case-based learning which utilized pedagogical approaches such as the flipped classroom for teaching residents. Virtual learning appears to be a suitable alternative to traditional, in-person learning, and may have a place post-pandemic as part of a blended curriculum with in-person and virtual components. The extent of disruption to radiology resident education varied based on the local impact of COVID-19 and the prevalence of redeployment, as did residents’ mental health and wellbeing. Accessibility of mental health resources for residents was highlighted as an issue that programs need to address during these difficult times. Moreover, the pandemic resulted in unavoidable reductions in procedural exposure which programs mitigated through the use of simulation technologies and virtual learning resources. Professional development activities such as mentorship and career planning were also dramatically impacted by the pandemic and remains a challenge that programs need to consider moving forward post-pandemic. The purpose of this review is to outline the changes made to radiology resident education as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and suggest what changes may be worthwhile to continue.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the training of Spanish pathology residents by conducting an online survey. It was distributed among the pathologists who had been residents during the pandemic and consisted of 31 questions about the demographics and the impact of the pandemic on their pathology training. In total, 114 residents completed the survey; they reported a decrease in the number of biopsies, cytology samples, autopsies, research activities, sessions, case corrections, and courses, as well as the detrimental effect this had on their training. Half of the residents had to cancel rotations and 32% were redeployed to other departments. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected pathology training, and our results can be used to understand the challenges residents have faced and mitigate their impact.

Abstract
PURPOSE The novel Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) has had a significant impact worldwide that led to changes in healthcare. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on trainee's mental health and educational preparedness. METHODS Trainees at the Indiana University School of Medicine were surveyed regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their training. Using a Likert scale, participants were asked questions pertaining to educational preparedness, mental health, and clinical work during the pandemic. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 27. The study was approved as exempt by the Institutional review Board (IRB). RESULTS 324 of the 1204 trainees responded to the survey. The respondents were 76% white with an equal distribution of males and females. A majority of the respondents were first year residents with an equal distribution of second, third, and fourth year residents. Twenty-three percent of respondents were in a procedural residency or fellowship program. Better perceived educational preparedness was associated with an improved home-work balance during COVID-19 (β = 0.506, p < 0.0001) and having a department that advocated/supported focus on mental health during COVID-19 (β = 0.177, p < 0.0001). Worse perceived educational preparedness was associated with being in procedural vs. non-procedural dominant training program (β = - 0.122, p = 0.01). CONCLUSION COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the training experience of residents and fellows. Departmental support increased mental well-being and perceived education preparedness in trainees. Trainees that felt they had a better home-work life balance had better educational preparedness compared to their peers. Also, trainees in procedural programs had less educational preparedness compared to their peers in non-procedural programs. This study highlights the importance for programs to find avenues to increase educational preparedness in their trainees while being attuned to the mental health of their trainees.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This article investigates the association between changes in electronic health record (EHR) use during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the rate of burnout, stress, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety among physician trainees (residents and fellows). METHODS A total of 222 (of 1,375, 16.2%) physician trainees from an academic medical center responded to a Web-based survey. We compared the physician trainees who reported that their EHR use increased versus those whose EHR use stayed the same or decreased on outcomes related to depression, anxiety, stress, PTSD, and burnout using univariable and multivariable models. We examined whether self-reported exposure to COVID-19 patients moderated these relationships. RESULTS Physician trainees who reported increased use of EHR had higher burnout (adjusted mean, 1.48 [95% confidence interval [CI] 1.24, 1.71] vs. 1.05 [95% CI 0.93, 1.17]; p = 0.001) and were more likely to exhibit symptoms of PTSD (adjusted mean = 15.09 [95% CI 9.12, 21.05] vs. 9.36 [95% CI 7.38, 11.28]; p = 0.035). Physician trainees reporting increased EHR use outside of work were more likely to experience depression (adjusted mean, 8.37 [95% CI 5.68, 11.05] vs. 5.50 [95% CI 4.28, 6.72]; p = 0.035). Among physician trainees with increased EHR use, those exposed to COVID-19 patients had significantly higher burnout (2.04, p < 0.001) and depression scores (14.13, p = 0.003). CONCLUSION Increased EHR use was associated with higher burnout, depression, and PTSD outcomes among physician trainees. Although preliminary, these findings have implications for creating systemic changes to manage the wellness and well-being of trainees.
